Qantas does Vegas direct

From what I can tell this isn't old news.

It's old, old news.
Well, to be fair to my humble self, my OP is new news - specifically about the upcoming flights.:p

But those who follow rugby league and/or the Las Vegas scene, or pay attention to Qantas’ announcements may have been aware anyway.

With Las Vegas become a dead city, and also the fierce immigration procedures at the US Border, I actually wonder if it is a shot at the foot to launch any US flights, in particular LAS?
I would have thought Qantas would be better off launching Mexico and add a new Mexican partner for connection to the carribean for those who are interested to go to the US.

I’d love to have direct flights to North America that don’t go to/via the US. Vancouver is OK but Mexico would be great.

I'm no expert, but suggest the elevation of Mexico City, makes non-stop Australia flights near impossible - at least commercially speaking.

MEX-Tokyo (SYD-1000 mi) seems to be OK, but to your point MEX-Shenzhen (SYD+700 mi) has a refuelling stop in Tijuana when returning from MEX.

Would be better suited to a funnel via AKL if anything, you then get MEL/SYD/BNE one stop (advantage over LAX- no US entry requirement) and AKL origin traffic. But I'd take a random stab in the dark that it would not be a priority for Qantas.

They used to stop in Acapulco (ACA). I’m not sure many Aussies are going to MEX itself (more beachside locations like CUN), so seems like the current arrangement of connecting through DFW would make more sense.

Connections to MEX and CUN from DFW are super easy. Longest amount of time Ive ever spent in an immigration line was at MEX.

Im not sure there is a huge market for flights into MEX from Aussies, connection wise good for Cuba but not a natural transit point for elsewhere. Whilst more Aussies go to YVR for tourism/Skiing its also got coughpy oneworld connectivity compared with US airports.

Some are reconsidering their need to travel to or via the USA however the loads must still be ok for QF as they haven't started cutting services and Classic award seats are still relatively scarce in J and F.

If QF introduces a new North American route Im still hoping for ORD, great as a location itself and also great connections elsewhere.

Except in increasing numbers many people don't wish or can’t transit the US (without hassle).

My favourite line from the Exec Traveller story is this one from Jetstar CEO Steph Tully about a Brisbane-Vegas flight - or, as she puts it, “Bris-Vegas to Las Vegas.” “It’s very Jetstar, we think."

Given how expensive the US and in particular Vegas, surely Vegas would be a dud + a lot of people have been there done that pre-pandemic when it seemed like every other week someone on my social media was going to the US for their first time. Jetstar would well servicing India or something.

Money saved on the airfare can be put towards the destination itself?

There’s very little Caribbean connectivity from MEX.

Whats the hassle ?

Been to Cuba previously.

Not eligible for ESTA, no consulate in Brisbane for tourist visa, booking 6-9months in advance for an interview, costs of flying return to another state for an interview, costs of a tourist visa. All for a 1-2 hour transit in a country I no longer wish to visit.

What year did you go to Cuba?
