Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Thursday 24 February, QF337, from SYD to LAS was a scheduled 1520 hours taking off punctually at 1542. However B789 VH-ZNG suffered an airconditioning fault and had to return to SYD. Passengers stayed on board while refuelling occurred, with the aircraft taking off at 1850. Same day gate arrival is forecast for 1337, 212 minutes late.

This was a special charter for the Rugby League code that routinely plays second fiddle to the AFL in Australia. High profile Sydneysider Peter V'Landys was on board, cracking a joke 'wishing we hadn't employed AFL engineers'.

Make it possible 1900 departure

If this turns out to be the case - either by -QPG being OK to fly, or a replacement brought in - it's the sort of 'middling' delay that's too short for passengers to be booked into an hotel, but long enough to be irritating, with the most adversely affected being parent(s) with babes or small children and the elderly.

At this stage it looks as if QF29 will form QF30 with the latter aiming for an 0250 hours pushback in HKG back down to MEL.

I feel sorry for the passengers in both flights… this long delay is painful to watch😢

Late update: @Melburnian1
Finally took off at 1938, ETA is 0129 the next morning…

Seemingly this week had been well planned with two up 787s on charter QF333 (ZNK) and QF337 (ZNG) and ZNH in HKG (returning tonight as QF6010)

QF (and other airlines) can probably do this because (apart from Chinese New Year and various sporting events such as Rugby League in Las Vegas), February is one of three typically quieter months for international travel ex/to Oz. May and November tend to be the other ones.

QF30 is unlikely to depart at 0250 hours from HKG.

One we missed was Wednesday 25 February's cancellation of B789-operated QF33 SYD-PER-CDG in France, with today's QF34 ex CDG also not operating.

These flights are normally reliable and mostly punctual., although Sunday 22's QF34 PER-SYD arrived 52 minutes late.

SYD was a mess Thursday night after a massive rainstorm hit the city. Many diversions, CBR had 14 including 6 QF. Curfew was relaxed with the QF75 departing at 00:04 and the QF499 at 00:02.

QF 127 SYD HKG on QPH is departing late - ETD is 1207 instead of 1115, this is after yesterday huge delay on QF 29 on QPG as shown in earlier posts.

Update: departed at 1242, but only 25 mins late!! ETA is 1816 instead of 1750

On Friday 27 February, A333 VH-QPG arrived HKG as QF29 (ex MEL) at 0131 hours, 476 minutes late. QF30 was up up and away at 0328 hours with MEL arrival this afternoon likely at 1521 hours, 431 late.

A332 VH-EBG arrived in BNE as QF52 ex SIN at 0542, 13 eatly. It is operating empty down to MEL as QF5024 with gate arrival forecast as 1250 hours, 80 late to form the 1205 hours MEL-SIN QF35. This is showing as pushing back at 1345 but that's most unlikely.

those passengers for that QF 29/30 would want nothing more than a good rest for stuck in airport all day or ungodly hour of departure at 0328 as I shared earlier.. it is sad for them

In more on Friday 27 FEbruary, QF68 from India's BLR to SYD should arrive at 1728 hours, 398 minutes late. Aircraft is A332 VH-EBQ. This is due to yeresterday's QF67 (the 0930 hours SYD-BLR) not airborne until 1747.

The delayed QF35 (see two posts above) should arrive SIN this evening at about 1859 hours, 114 minutes late.

333 issues possibly due to VH-QPD which seems stuck in NRT after arriving as QF61 on Wed afternoon.
On Thu QPJ ferried QF6013 SYD-NRT to pick up a Thu QF62Dthat arrived into BNE Fri morning.
