Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Sunday 21 December 2025, QF63, the scheduled 0930 hours midmorning SYD-JNB is expected to push back at 1100. A388 VH-OQB should operate it, having arrived from DFW as QF8 in SYD at 0701 hours, six minutes late.

QF20 ex MNL arrived SYD this morning at 0938 hours, 178 minutes late: inevitable given how delayed QF19 yesterday was ex SYD.

UPDATE: By 1140 AEDT, the expected departure delay to today's QF63 became pushback at 1300 hours.

The A380 time keeping has been pretty bad lately, presumably the unplanned mx of OQC is having an impact.

The delayed Sunday 21 December QF63 took off from SYD at 1327 hours with A388 VH-OQB likely to arrive at gate at 1807 hours, 187 minutes late. The 1730 hours Sunday overnight JNB-SYD QF64 is unlikely to depart prior to 2030 hours, so SYD arrival tomorrow may be after 1600 hours.

A333 VH-QPJ is operating QF59, the 1200 'high noon' SYD-HND airborne at 1305 hours with gate arrival suggested as 34 late at 2034 hours.

Possibly due to a severe thunderstorm that's passed over MEL, QF443 from SYD to MEL (A321 VH-OGB, the 1230 hours in the sky at 1250) had a missed approach a few minutes ago. It then had an unusual flying pattern above Melbourne's eastern suburbs. It eventually arrived at its gate at 1443 hours, 38 late.

Continuing with Sunday 21 December 2025, QF2227, the 1850 hours evening SYD-WGA (Q400 VH-84P) was in the sky at 2007 but after reaching slightly northwest of Gundagai, NSW, it began what may have been a holding pattern to eventually decide to divert back to SYD where arrival should be at about 2217 hours. The far preferable 'old' BOM site (still available to access) had radar suggesting there'd been quite some rain over Wagga Wagga, although it had moved eastwards when I accessed the site.

Probably unlikely passengers will reach WGA tonight, and far too late to instead travel on the Sydney to Melbourne NSW TrainLink XPT that being Christmas holidays would be (like many flights) booked out. Years ago, Wagga Wagga was also served by various interstate road coach operators but the remaining ones (Firefly Express, Greyhound Australia and newbie FlixBus) favour the Hume Highway/Freeway that unlike the train does not go through Wagga. All these surface transport operators typically depart Sydney before 2100 so too early for tonight's QFd unfortunates.

Monday 22 December has QF19, the lunchtime 1205 hours SYD up to MNL (A333 VH-QPH) taking off at 1328 hours. Forecast gate arrival becomes 1823, 53 minutes behind the eight ball.

Sister -QPJ is on 'the 59', the scheduled 1200 'high noon' in the sky at 1334, so gate arrival should be about 2057 hours, 57 late.

A332 VH-EBL is operating QF51, the scheduled 1035 hours midmorning BNE to SIN that pointed skywards at 1122. It should arrive at gate 32 late at 1702 hours.

Sister aircraft -EBN is on QF35, the 1205 hours MEL-SIN in the sky at 1320 for forecast gate arrival at 1758 hours, 53 minutes tardy.

Flagship QF1 is to be run by A388 VH-OQD. From today, scheduled departure from SYD changes to 1615 (previously 1555) with the flight slowed by 10 minutes from SYD to SIN, but later, sped up by half an hour from SIN to LHR. The 22 December offering is forecast to depart 35 late at 1650 hours.

UPDATE: A388 VH-OQD on QF1 didn't take off until 1723 so SIN arrival at gate is displaying as 2251 hours, 76 late.

In more on Monday 22 December, QF11 (A388 VH-OQH), the 1745 hours SYD up to LAX was only airborne at 1925 hours. Same day gate arrival should be approximately 1335 hours, 65 late.

-OQG is on 'the 11's' opposite number, 'the 12' that instead of departing LAX soon after its scheduled pushback of 2125 hours on Sunday 21 took off at 0037 hours on Monday 22. SYD arrival on Tuesday 23 should be 0956 hours, 151 minutes late.

The 1200 'high noon' QF93 from MEL to LAX was in the sky at 1301 with VH-OQI, another A380. Arrival at gate looks like 0800 hours, 35 behind same day.

B789 VH-ZNB is operating QF94 from LAX to MEL with gate arrival tomorrow morning said to be about 1035, also 65 behind schedule.

B738 VH-XZF on QF139 (1855 hours SYD-CHC) was expected to push back 50 minutes late as its previous flight, QF146 from AKL to SYD arrived 56 minutes late at 1836 hours.

Another B789, VH-ZNJ is running QF33, the scheduled 1530 hours mid afternoon SYD-PER-CDG that didn't take off until 1745. PER gate arrival should be around 1912 hours, 112 minutes late, so the timetabled 2020 hours second sector to Paris is certain to depart late. Sometimes the inbound B789 on 'the 10' from LHR operates this second QF33 sector. QFi will have its reasons but at face value given luggage and any freight URLs (small containers) must be transferred if originating in Sydney, it seems a coughbersome way to operate.

In more on Monday 22 December, QF186 from ZQN to BNE has B738 VH-XZK with likely at gate arrival of 2006 hours, 171 minutes late.

The NLK-BNE service is QF184 operated by VH-VZW, another B738. It is timetabled to be blocks on at 1735 hours but the anticipated 2019 hours gate time will be 164 minutes behind schedule.
