Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF11 from SYD to LAX has become variable in its timekeeping.

On Wednesday 9 August 2023, it took off at 1144 hours, 84 minutes after timetabled departure with A388 VH-OQH. LAX same day arrival should be approximately 0750, 45 late. The plane had been in Sydney since arriving as QF12 (ex LAX) at 0752 hours, only seven late.

When airlines such as EK and QR can routinely turn A380s around fairly quickly, such as two and a half hours, it mystifies why QFi has so much difficulty in achieving a similar benchmark. EK has a far larger fleet of A380s but also a bigger number of destinations to which it flies using these birds, so it's not as if they're always close to home base in DXB - far from it.

Continuing with Wednesday 9 August, QF9 (1505 hurs MEL-PER, B789 VH-ZNB) was not in the sky until 1654 so arrival should be 1902 hours, 107 minutes late. This will make an on-time arrival in LHR tomorrow early morning UK time impossible.

QF6 from FCO and PER arrived early in Sydney this afternoon, but even though ZNM had plenty of time to form a punctual QF5 back to PER and on to FCO, it is an expected 43 late into PER at 2203 hours tonight. However it may well be close to, or on time, arriving at FCO tomorrow mid morning Italian time.

A332 VH-EBP on QF40, the mid evening Wednesday 9 August 2023 did not take off until 2350 hours, so on Thurday 10, gate arrival is 0848 hours, 128 minutes late. This was because after arriving yesterday 66 late as QF30 on the 'new' flight from HKG, it did not take off until 1821 on the 1510 hours QF39 MEL up to CGK.

A388 VH-OQB as QF12 from LAX earlier arrived in MEL at 0818 hours, 33 behind.

QF35 (1200 'high noon' MEL-SIN) is cancelled today, Thursday 10.

B789 VH-ZNC on QF7 from SYD up to DFW took off last night at 2007 so expected arrival at its Texan gate becomes 1956 hours, 231 minutes tardy.

The diverted to ADL flight was QF82, the Wednesday 9 August scheduled 2030 hours SIN-SYD in the sky at 2147. It took off from ADL at 0801 hours, arriving at its SYD gate at 1007 hours, 222 minutes later than the normal schedule of 0625 hours.

It was a medical diversion. Let's hope the passenger concerned is OK.

QF36 787 VH-ZNK SIN-MEL last night (9 August) scheduled to depart at 2015 was cancelled due to engine issues after sitting on the tarmac until around 2am. Pax offered a hotel room and most moved to QF38 SIN-MEL scheduled to depart at 2230 today (10 August) and arrive in MEL 0855 11 August making for an approx 28 hour delay.

Assume thats why QF35 cancelled today too

The overnight delayed from Wednesday 9 QF25 (SYD up to HND) took off at 1336 hours on Thursday 10 August with gate arrival estimated as 2159 instead of bright and early at 0525 hours, 894 minutes late.

ZNM on the SYD-PER-FCO is suggested as arriving at its terminus shortly, at the local time in Rome of 0956 hours, 66 behind. The 1050 hours FCO down to PER QF6 is predicted to push back at 1130, somewhat optimistically.

On 9 August, the MEL-PER-LHR QF9 was at its intermediate stop from 1925 hours (130 minutes late) to takeoff at 2048,l a brief stop indeed. Today, London gate arrival became 0651 hours, 106 minutes behind the timetable.

Thursday 10 August saw QF5 arrive in FCO at 1000 hours, 70 minutes late with B789 VH-ZNM.

The return QF6 (the 1050 hours) was airborne later than forecast, at 1230. Suggested gate arrival today (Friday 11) in PER is 0934 hours, 64 behind.

Colleague ZNB is on 'the 10' from LHR down to PER: gate arrival is likely at 1210 hours, half an hour behind the timetable.

A further B789, ZNK arrived in MEL at 0527 hours this morning, 13 early as QF36 redeye from SIUN, but its next flight, the lengthy operation from MEL up to Texas' DFW is delayed until 1500 this afternoon in pushback.

ZNI was on last night's SYD-SFO QF73 that took off at 2244 with same day (early evening) arrival at gate likely to be 32 late at 1847.

:Last night, A333 VH-QPG on QF25 arrived HND in Japan at 2157 hours, 992 minutes late. It has formed QF80, the scheduled evening 2105 hours to MEL that pointed skywards at 0003 this morning. Projected gate time in Melbourne becomes 1051 hours, 136 minutes late.

A332 VH-EBM was on QF69 yesterday from MEL up to DEL, arriving at gate at 1804 hours, 24 behind, but the return QF70 is worse, expected into MEL at 1338 hours, 68 minutes past the allotted.

ZNF on QF64 overnight from JNB looks to be arriving in SYD this arvo at 1359 hours, 34 minutes tardy.

Unusually, QF87 on Thursday (0930 hours SYD up to South Korea's major ICN) is delayed until an expected departure at 1300 hours on Friday, 1650 minutes late.

This QF21 did not take off until 1704 so DFW at gate arrival on the same day should be 1716 hours, 211 minutes late.

QF11, the Saturday 12 August 2023 at 1020 hours SYD-LAX (A388 VH-OQL) took off at 1156 with expected gate arrival (same day) becoming 62 late at 0807 hours.

The flagship, QF1 was airborne with OQG at 1653 hours so predicted SIN arrival is 65 down at 2235 tonight, making an on time arrival in London tomorrow morning UK time most unlikely.

Both A380s had been in Sydney this morning for several hours, so not sure why the tardiness. Perhaps last minute repairs, or less likely, late connecting passengers?

A333 VH-QPJ should arrive on the ex-HNL QF104 tonight in Sydney at 1919, 39 late, perhaps with some passengers from the severe bush('wild')fire up there that sadly killed more than 50 people.

Inexplicable delays continue.

On Saturday 12, B789 VH-ZNJ had been in MEL since prior to 0500 AEST but the QF9 (1505 hours mid afternoon MEL-PER-LHR) didn't take off until 1822, with arrival suggested shortly in Perth at 1955 hours, 160 minutes behind time.

Fortunately, given there's normally almost a seven hour layover in London, it's unlikely that QF10 on Sunday 13 will be 'unlucky'.

A333 VH-QPJ is the 2020 hours SYD-HND QF25, in the sky at 2128 for Sunday 13 at gate suggested arrival at 0557 hours, 32 behind.

Friday 11 August's very late night timetabled QF12, the 2340 hours LAX-SYD (A388 VH-OQI) was not airborne until 0148 on Saturday 12, so Sunday 13 sees likely gate arrival at 0909 hours, 84 minutes late.

B789 VH-ZNK arrived DFW on Friday 11 at 1735 hours, 230 minutes late as QF21 from Melbourne, and has then formed QF8, the 2230 hours DFW down to SYD airborne at 0012 on Saturday, just after midnight. Sunday arrival should be shortly at 0727 hours, 72 minutes behind schedule.

A332 VH-EBB was about an hour late departing PER yesterday as QF71 to SIN, so the return arrived back in Perth at 0124 hours this morning, 59 late.

ZNH is on the Saturday night QF73 from SYD up to SFO that took off at 2249, so a same day 1951 arrival (36 late) is the likely outcome.

Yesterday, A333 VH-QPC arrived ICN (ex SYD) as QF87 at 1902 hours, 18 early, but the return QF88 is delayed, with this 2100 hours mid evening flight not in the sky until 2242. Sunday at gate arrival back in Sydney should be 0939, 64 late.

Given its tardy departure yesterday from SYD, QF1 (A388 VH-OQG) should arrive LHR local time today at 0707, 32 behind, so it's picked up some time. Earlier this morning, OQB arrived SYD as 'the 2' ex SIN/LHR at 0545, 35 behind.

QF9 with B789 VH-ZNJ is suggested as arriving LHR today (ex PER and before that MEL) at 0718, 133 minutes past the timetable.

Also on Sunday 13, QF143, the 0850 hours SYD-AKL (B738 VH-VZI) took off at a very late 1118 hours, so gate arrival should be at 1557 hours, 122 minutes late. It had been in Sydney yesterday since 1627 hours (ex MEL as QF454).

QF41 (1345 hours afternoon flight SYD-CGK, A332 VH-EBA) was in the sky at 1553 with gate arrival suggested as 2010 tonight, 85 behind. QF42 (the redeye back down to SYD) will be delayed.

Monday 14 August 2023 has seen QF12 from LAX to SYD arrive with A388 VH-OQK at 0827 hours, 42 late. It then returned to LAX as QF11, the 1020 hours that was not in the sky until 1242 hours. Expected same day arrival is 0835 hours, 90 late.

A332 VH-EBR on QF69 from MEL to DEL should arrive at its gate at 1812, 32 minutes tardy.

Despite B789 VH-ZNB having been in Melbourne since arriving as the ex-SIN QF36 at 0512 hours this morning (28 minutes early), the 1200 'high noon' MEL-SIN QF35 did not become airborne until 1354 this afternoon. Gate arrival should be at about 1929 hours, 89 behind.

ZNM was only 21 late arriving in PER on Monday 14 as QF6 ex Rome's FCO, but then did not take off on the scheduled 1000 hours second leg to SYD until 1114 hours. Arrival should be at 1653, 48 minutes tardy. If the aircraft is returning to Rome as the 1820 hours QF5, it may have at least a short delay.

Another colleague, ZNF, arrived in LHR (at gate) this morning at 0650 hours UK time, 105 late.

The next QF9 (the Monday 14 departure timetabled ex MEL at 1505 hours) is expected to push back in the late afternoon at 1745 hours. Departure from PER will be similarly late.

On Monday 14 August, the Malaysia Airlines MH122 diversion back to SYD (see separate thread, with a passenger creating a huge disturbance) doesn't seem to be resulting in many delays even though one north-south runway is closed and passengers from that MH flight stuck on board.

However QF7 (1540 hours SYD-DFW, B789 VH-ZNH) was queued at 1830 waiting to use the parallel north-south runway that remains operating,
