Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Sunday 30 July's QF1 was not airborne until 1818, so expected SIN gate arrival for A388 VH-OQD becomes 0007 hours on Monday 31, 157 minutes behind schedule. Expect LHR arrival after 0830 hours local time.

On Saturday, it was airborne at 2013, arriving CGK at 0024 on Sunday 30, 334 minutes late. The return QF42 arrived in SYD at 1108 hours this morning, 283 minutes behind schedule. It is probably forming QF63, the 1000 hours SYD-JNB as this is expected to push back at 1300 hours early this afternoon.
QF63 is a B789. The QF42 (QPJ) positioned to BNE to most likely enter maintenance, replacing QPH, which has returned to service.

On Sunday 30 July 2023, QF6, the 1050 hours FCO down to PER (B789 VH-ZNB) was not airborne until 1216 hours, so Monday 31 should see PER arrival at gate at around the 0923 hours mark, 53 late.

ZNI is on QF10 from LHR to PER, the Sunday 1155 hours not in the sky until 1305 hours so on Monday, arrival at 1231 in Perth (51 late) is on the cards.

'The 1' from SYD was in SIN this morning from 0005 hours (155 minutes tardy) to takeoff at 0211, so A388 VH-OQD should arrive L:HR later today at approximately 0815, 100 minutes late: if it can achieve this, it'll beat my forecast of '0830', but often with late running planes into Heathrow, they encounter a hold close to arrival.

On Saturday 29, QF87 (A333 VH-QPD) was badly late, arriving ICN (ex SYD) at 2337 hours, 257 minute slate. QF88 was delayed overnight, taking off at 0801 on Sunday 30, but subsequently diverted to CNS, the first time I've seen this flight do this. It was in the sky from CNS at 2006 hours, arriving SYD last night at 2243 hours, 848 minutes behind schedule.

B789 VH-ZND is supposedly about to depart JNB for SYD as 'the 64' on Sunday 30 late night, about six hours late.

Reports on social media say it was because of a tyre replacement needed in ICN, followed by computer issues - crew hours maxed out, so down in CNS where a new crew boarded.

In further on Monday 31 July 2023, QF11, the 1020 hours midmorning SYD-LAX was in the sky at 1155, so same day arrival is suggested as 0752 hours, 47 behind the schedule for A388 VH-OQL.

A333 VH-QPD has taken off from SYD at 0839 hours on Monday 31 to SIN as empty special QF6017 - so maintenance there?

Separately, A332 VH-EBV on the morning 0925 hours MEL-DEL QF69 was up in the air at 1007 hours, so predicted at gate arrival becomes 1816 hours, 36 behind.

Monday 31 July 2023's QF5 from PER to Italy's FCO (B789 VH-ZNM) was the 2250 hours airborne at 0013 on Tuesday 1 August. It arrived at its gate in Rome at 0955, 65 late, but in a repeat of problems some other QF6s have had, it wasn't airborne on the scheduled 1050 hours to PER until 1237. Arrival on Wednesday 2 should be at about 0932 hours, 62 behind. If there's a snappy turnaround and the usual favourable westerlies, the second sector to SYD may arrive close to the timetable at its gate.

Last night pax were advised that today’s Qq-operated E190 services QF1954 early morning ADL - ASP and the return mid-morning QF1955 ASP-ADL were being cancelled; reason not stated. Given these flights usually operate full and the limited other daily services into/ex ASP, there has likely been substantial disruption to a couple of hundred pax.

QF41 departed about 1h 45m late yesterday again. I asked the crew on the plane when they knew the flight was delayed and they said about 1.30pm when they were told there was a technical issue and a part needed to be replaced. Apparently that was done quite quickly but the signing off of the documentation took ages.

On Wednesday 2 August 2023, QF3 (B789 VH-ZNH), the 0930 hours midmorning SYD-AKL took off at a delayed 1057 after pushing back at 1036 hours. Arrival at gate in NZ was at 1536 hours, 61 minutes late.

However the aircraft hasn't departed AKL for JFK (its second sector). The Qantas flight status page merely shows '1420' (NZ time (1220 AEST) as the amended departure time, accompanied by that infamous word 'delayed'. I assume the flight (and cabin) crew(s) have run out of allowed duty time, so have gone to rest. It's odd that there's no published change to departure (and JFK arrival) times yet. Is there an AFFer booked?

QF4 is displaying on the Qantas site as departing ounctually at 1930 hours local time on Wednesday night. A fantasy.

Given this aircraft will be badly late, it may have adverse ramifications for a B789-operated flight on Friday 4 August 2023 ex Sydney.

Colleague ZNI is on 'the 9' (1505 hours MEL-PER-LHR). It arrived in PER at 1805 hours, 50 minutes late but (obviously) has yet to depart.

Earlier, A332 VH-EBJ on the 1150 hours late morning PER-SIN QF71 was up up and away at 1249 hours, arriving at gate at 1815, 55 late. The return midnight horror schedule4d arriving back in PER QF72 should be similar.

Updating the stranded QF3 situation, the Wednesday 2 departure from AKL scheduled for 1635 hours has been delayed until a projected 2215 hours on Thursday 3. JFK arrival is proposed as 2235 hours on Thursday late evening, as opposed to the timetabled 1650 on Wednesday, so 1785 minutes behind schedule.

The return timetabled 1930 hours ex JFK on Wednesday 2 hasn't been given a confirmed, delayed schedule yet. I've never been to JFK but gather it lacks a curfew.

Wow that’s almost enough time for pax to return to SYD, go via LAX and still beat their original flight to JFK.

Wonder if any pax got re-accommodated on NZ/UA out of AKL (subject to capacity)?

guessing here - they have to fly in an engineer from SYD, and a relief crew as the QF3 crew in AKL would have timed out?

(a) Yes, logical, but see my update re the replacement aircraft

(b) could often be true, but again, see the update just below.

UPDATE: FR24 is implying that the aircraft from QF3 waylaid in AKL, B789 VH-ZNH is defective, as it suggests VH-ZNG is flying empty from Sydney to Auckland as QF6014: it took off at1609. So this goes a huge way to explaining the greater than 24 hour delay.

Are these 787 delays related to the cancellation of QF35 today?

Seems correct: see my previous post above. The aircraft B789 VH-ZNG flew empty from MEL to SYD today as QF6004, taking off at 1322 and arriving at gate at 1425 to form QF6014 as above. QF35 was meant to be a B789 today (which it isn't most days IIRC) so you must be on the money.

If this replacement manages to arrive AKL (local time) at say 2030 hours with 2:16 running time and my arbitrary five minutes from landing to arriving at gate, it'll struggle to depart at 2215 tonight AKL time as QF indicated. Bags and presumably freight plus mail have to be loaded, and perhaps meals, snacks and beverage carts transferred from the defective B789 to the new one. milehighclub will know more about this.

QFi continues to suggest the overnight delayed QF3 will depart AKL tonight at 2215 NZ time but FR24 claims '2329 hours'. Not sure how the latter knows if the airline does not (or perhaps QFi isn't yet publicising?)

On Tuesday 1 August, B789 VH-ZNF was the QF93 from MEL (the 2025 hours) airborne at 0034 hours on Tuesday 2. It arrived LAX on Monday 1 at 2114 hours, 214 minutes late. On Wednesday 3, it formed an empty LAX to JFK scheduled at 1000 hours. It was in the sky at 1029, arriving at gate at 1800 hours, 41 early. This enabled it to operate the Wednesday 3 August 1930 hours JFK-AKL QF3 punctually, being in the sky at 2041 for mooted Thursday 4 arrival at 0456 hours, four minutes early.

A388 VH-OQI on THursday 3 August 2023's QF1 (1510 hours ex SYD) was airborne at 1656 so SIN arrival at gate should be 2235 hours, 65 behind.

A333 VH-OQB is on QF104 from HNL down to SYD, with gate arrival likely 35 minutes late at 1915.

Wednesday 2 August's QF27 (1235 hours lunchtime SYD across to SCL, B789 VH-ZND) took off at a very late 1548 hours, arriving same day at 1411 hours, 186 minutes tardy. The return QF28 (the 1340 hours) was not airborne until 1622 but did not get far (broadly in line with the map offshore from Puerto Montt, a location I once travelled by train to!).

QFi is suggesting this flight will depart Santiago (de Chile) at 1200 'high noon' on Thursday 3 August 2023, arriving in SYD at 1550 hours on Friday 4, 1315 hours late.

With QF3 also in trouble, and one extra B789 inoperable (the one in AKL - see above), surely this must have some adverse effects in the next couple of days.
