Qantas Delays/Cancellations

In more on Tuesday 18 February, QF37 (1720 hours MEL - SIN, A332 VH-EBM) was earlier showing as an expected on time pushback but severe thunderstorms put paid to that. The aircraft was airborne at 1853 hours so arrival has become 2324 hours, 69 late.

QF464 (1730 hours MEL - SYD with B738 VH-VXI) took off at 1856 so a 2011 hours, 76 late is the prediction. The 1800 hours, however, is less delayed, with VH_VZW suggested as a 2004 hours at gate arrival, 39 late.

The 1725 hours MQL - MEL (Q400 VH-QOU) took off at 1844 so arrival should be 1954, 79 late.

QF632 (1810 hours early evening MEL - BNE was on its way skywards 50 minutes later. VH_VYD is suggesting a 2000 hours at gate arrival, 40 minutes behind.

The 1830 hours SYD - MERL (QF459 whose taskmaster is B738 VH-YZR) was airborne at 1936 so delayed arrival should be 2104, 59 minutes late.

This delayed QF2 (A388 VH-OQL, not 'OQI') was in SIN on Tuesday 18 from 0548 to 0729 hours with arrival in SYD tonight likely at 1806, so a little better than QFi had estimated.

A388 VH-OQE doesn't appear to have operated any passenger flights since arriving as QF8 this morning in SYD at 0612 hours, seven minutes late. It's unclear why it could not have formed a punctual QF1 at 1700 hours to SIN and LHR, instead of the 210 minute advised delay.

As at 2045 hours on 18 February, VH-OQE was still in SYD. Is it defective?

VH-OQL came in on the much delayed QF2 (see inset) and has just departed on the 1700 hours ex SYD, QF1, at 2024 hours. Sydney may be down to a single runway.

The SIN stop is suggested for Wednesday 19 between 0120 and 0245 with LHR arrival amended to 0855 hours, 160 late.

QF8 on Monday 17 departed DFW at 2017 hours, 32 minutes behind schedule with Wednesday 19 SYD arrival estimated as also 32 late at 0637 hours.
 
VH-OQL landed at 5.53pm in Sydney as QF2 - nearly 12 hours late. It turned around to operate today's QF1. It took off at 8.58pm - 238 minutes late and will get to Singapore at 1.15am - 190 minutes late.

It is scheduled to continue from Singapore at 2.45am this morning and to arrive London at 8.50am - 155 minutes late. Given the long turnaround in London (QF2 doesn't leave until 8.35pm), it should not delay Wednesday night's QF2 without further problems.

With taxiing taking a while in SYD, this has changed to a SIN stop of 0144 to 0310 hours and LHR Wednesday arrival at 0920, 185 minutes tardy.
 
Wednesday 19 February sees QF51, the mostly punctual 1150 hours BNE - SIN departing at 1238 so expected arrival becomes 1820 hours, half an hour late.

QF35, the 1210 hours lunchtime MEL - SIN did not depart until 1420 this afternoon. Predicted at gate arrival in Lion City is 1902, 117 hours late. This will delay returning redeye QF36. The reason is that A388 VH-OQK on QF94, the Monday 18 departed LAX only five minutes late at 2255 hours but diverted via SYD, staying from 0955 to 1100 with eventual MEL arrival 1219 hours, 149 minutes late.

This Tuesday 18 February QF1 ex SYD was in SIN today (Wednesday 19) from 0134 to 0320 hours - unpleasant timings if one has an hotel booked in the Lion City - so expected LHR arrival has become 0915 hours, three hours late.
 
Earlier on Thursday 20 February, QF35, the soon to be downgraded in size 1210 hours MEL - SIN daily departed at 1256 hours with arrival suggested as 1745 hours, 40 minutes late.

On arrival into the lounge we were notified of a 3hr+ delay to this service due to an aircraft going U/S earlier in the day in Perth. The P1 SST moved a few of us across to the NZ124 MEL AKL service with a 1210 departure. The QF153 service eventually departed MEL at 1638 with a 2159 arrival into AKL - just over 4hrs late.

While it isn't the busiest month of the year, it's always instructive how at short notice seats can often be 'found' on other airlines.

Some may believe that aircraft are fully booked all the time. Far from the case.

Your delay also meant that QF158, the evening 1915 hours AKL - MEL (A332 VH_EBN) was not in the sky until 2324 hours with arrival at 0100 hours on Saturday 22, 215 minutes behind schedule.
 
QF35, the 1210 hours lunchtime MEL - SIN is again late with departure at 1256 hours on Saturday 22 February. It was airborne at 1313, quite good. Arrival is estimated to be 33 late at 1738, so it shouldn't mean any delays for the return redeye QF36. Refurbished VH-OQK is the A388.

QF691 was the 1655 hours from MEL up up and away at 1757 on Sunday 23 February with B738 VH-VYA. It arrived at 1832 in Wine City, 47 minutes tardy.

When I checked about three hours ago, the vast majority of flights were punctual or close to it, but as jase05 comments, there's quite a lot of late flights (not just QFd) ex MEL in particular. Just the Sunday late arvo/early evening peak?

QF462 (1900 hours MEL - SYD) was airborne at 1952 with VH-VXA. Suggested arrival is 37 behind at 2102 mid evening.

Colleague VH-VYA is on QF694, the scheduled 1825 hours dinner time ADL across to MEL, in the sky at 1922 hours. Arrival should be 2058 hours, 43 behind.

Our pilot mentioned over the PA that “we are basically down to one runway in MEL currently”
I’m not sure what he meant by that as both runways were in use when we departed. We were 6th in the queue with atleast another 6 or 7 behind us and over on the main runway I counted 8 in the queue.
There was also several that had just landed that had formed another queue.

'Basically' is an unusual word in that context. Isn't it equivalent to 'half pregnant?' Like you, I'm mystified by what he meant.
 
Perhaps he meant that the crosswind was in excess of the maximum for many, but not all of the aircraft. So, most of the traffic would be on one runway, but there’d be the occasional one that had other options.

Or perhaps he just meant half pregnant.
