Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF816 MEL-CBR (B738 VH-VXC) is currently diverting back to Melbourne

QF1467 SYD-CBR (DH8D VH-QOB) is also diverting to MEL

Bushfire just south of CBR. Started yesterday afternoon. Was under control overnight. Wind pushed it past control lines this morning.

On a difficult day weatherwise in SYD on Friday 24 January, QF129 (1055 hours SYD north to PVG, A332 VH-EBO) did not take off until 1209 hours, so estimated arrval is 32 late at 1902 early this evening, delaying slightly the QF130 return redeye.

The 1100 SYD - MEL (QF427, VH-VZO) did not become airborne until 1224 hours so at gate arrival should be around the 1340 hours mark, 65 minutes tardy. The equivalent northbound QF426 has had to hold south of Sydney, so A332 VH-EBQ should arrive at roughly 1301 hours, 36 minutes late.

Later on 24 January, QF19, the 1225 hours SYD up to MNL airborne at 1326 hours with A332 VH-EBV is arriving at gate at 1830, an hour late. This will delay the 1900 hours redeye back down to SYD by about 45 minutes off blocks.

QF2346 (Q400 VH-LQJ, the 1900 hours BNE up to GLT) was iairborne at 2013 with arrival suggested as 2110, also an hour behind.

B717 VH-NXR on QF1525 (1845 hours scheduled early evening SYD down to CBR short hop) is far worse, taking off at 2127 for an expected arrival at 2206 late tonight, 146 minutes behind the timetable.

The 1930 hours SYD - MEL (QF467, B738 VH-XZC) was up up and away at 2034, so arrival has become a suggested 2146 hours, 41 minutes late.

Have a look at QF8.
I'm here in Auckland...

Landed in Nadi for medical emergency, originally going to divert to Brisbane but ultimately went to Auckland. Now most passengers are being put onto a special 787 flight being sent out to AKL later today.

Why couldn't they send another A380 crew to AKL and how will the A380 return to AUS now?

So what's the story? Looking at FR24, it seems the turn to Nadi is quite late, so that sounds medical. I assume you're in Auckland due crew hours. The flight plan sent to the aircraft was actually Nadi to Brisbane.

They were looking for crew to depart Sydney at 1020 to recover the aircraft.

Yeh they asked for doctors onboard about 6hrs away from Sydney, then landed into Nadi to get assistance and off-board the passenger. Then told we'd go to Brisbane due to crew hours rather than Sydney, but after about 30mins in the air out of Nadi they diverted to AKL.

So why can't the crew taking the A380 back take the passengers from AKL also?

QF's site suggests QF8 arrived in AKL at 0905 hours on Saturday 25 January with likely departure this afternoon at 1630 hours for a 1745 hours arrival in SYD, 700 minutes late. Doesn't this imply it would be carrying at least some passengers across the Tasman?

One consequence is that QF7, the scheduled 1440 hours SYD - DFW is estimated to push back at 1940 tonight with same day arrival in Texas becoming 1745, 290 minutes behind the schedule.

Whomever was travelling to Sydney will be on QF7008 leaving at 16:30, this will be on a 787-9 aircraft

They're trying to get others with connections onto direct flights from AKL.

I may have missed something but the only B789 that's able to form this flight seems to be VH-ZNK that arrived in MEL on Saturday 25 January at 0659 hours, 36 minutes early on QF30 ex HKG, the redeye.

I'll try to note which aircraft it is. Mind you, we're receiving very regular updates and changes by SMS and the QF App, so who know what the final plan will be. The flight was quite full,

Presumably because they don't have a cabin crew who can operate it.

One source - may have been FlightAware - claims you'll be pushing back at 1700 hours NZ time not 1630.

QF sms's say that "we've had to change your flight time for QF7008 at 1500". we were never told that early at the airport, boarding passes show boarding at 16:30.
Post automatically merged:

Yes everyone had to disembark at AKL, proceed through customs, collect bags and then wait at checkin to receive new boarding passes - an 8hr transit in AKL.

One reason for having to collect bags may be that (from what you've suggested) with not all passengers (or bags) going on the one flight from AKL, it'd be too complex to sort bags that wouldn't be tagged for these ex-AKL flights.

Waiting at checkin after many hours on QF8 via NAN must have been tiring.

FWIW, none of us could use the automated Immigration gates either. I assume this was because our flight was never meant to land in AKL so our passports weren't flagged for arrival into AKL either. So that created a long queue at immigration, then we had to be cordoned off in a dis-used check-in zone until the flight was in QF's system to allow us to check in.

I'm by myself so its not a major problem, but as a parent i did empathise with those travelling with small children. At least those standing around me, while mildly annoyed, understood the situation regarding the medical emergency.

Looking at FR24, it appears VH-ZND is on its way to AKL and should be landing soon.

Thanks: it took off from BNE at 1030 (on the dot) as QF6006. Estimated gate arrival time is roughly 1606 hours, so I'd be surprised if you push back at 1700 hours.

UPDATE: The inbound empty ('ferry') flight is taking longer than forecast as at 1600 hours AKL time it was still on descent.

FURTHER UPDATE: The B789 landed at approximately 1617 hours, so it should be at its aerobridge in a few minutes.

Earlier, QF127, the 0935 hours SYD - HKG departed 59 minutes late, so expected arrival has become 1639, 49 late.

Today's QF7 is further delayed to a predicted 2200 hours ex SYD late tonight with same day DFW arrival stated as 2005 hours, meaning a delay to the Saturday 25 January QF8 DFW back to SYD. A guess at departure for the latter might be 2200 hours, not the scheduled 1945.

Ha! We've just been advised that QF7008 isn't departing until 19:30 AKL time. The plane is here, just not at a gate.

I can't fathom why it takes 3hrs to turnaround an empty plane specifically flown here to pickup delayed passengers.
