Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Family member on QF93 this morning (Thursday 29 August).
Scheduled for 9am departure, a one hour delay was announced around 8am. Push back about 10.10 and take-off just after 10.20, with arrival estimated 40 minutes late. I hope QF11 to JFK waits this time.
I notice it is VH-OQB which operated QF94 from LAX (on time), rather than VH-OQA from Singapore which had arrived earlier.

ayebee, great info. I

In one of the last couple of days QF11 from SYD (the A388) was similarly late and QF11 (the B789) was held in LAX, so your folks have a good chance, though it may also depend on the number of connecting passengers and amount of freight bound for JFK.

Latter is such a major destination that if there were say 400 on board departing MEL, one would think at least 20 per cent would be bound for JFK, although the B789 is far smaller capacity.

On Thursday 29 August, QF29, the 0940 hours MEL up to HKG day flight did not depart until 1052 and take off until 1106 hours, so arrival is suggested as 1750, half an hour late. The aircraft had been delayed in HKG last night as QF30 and did not arrive MEL until 0822, 47 late.

ayebee's family's QF93 (see above) should arrive LAX at 0722 hours, 57 late.

QF11 from LAX across to JFK on Wednesday 28 arrived at 1659, 19 late but was then delayed, with departure of QF12 not until 1948 hours, 98 late. Forecast LAX arrival for this B789 is 2210, 70 late, meaning that the A388 from LAX down to SYD, also QF12, will be delayed until 2315 in its pushback, 45 late.

When the transcon. USA '12' is late, QF94 isn't always held, but looks like it is "today" with a 25 late pushback at 2305 hours Wednesday night the expectation. QF16 for BNE should depart from its gate at 2350, half an hour behind schedule.

B744 VH-OEF on QF63, the often delayed 1055 hours morning SYD - JNB pushed back at 1118 but did not take off until 1157, so arrival has become a suggested 1740, 40 late, meaning QF64 tonight will be at least slightly late departing its gate.

Later on 29 August, QF450 (B738 VH-XZI, the 1630 hours MEL - SYD airborne at 1654, only about 10 - 15 late) had to hold above Gunning for quite a while so arrival is estimated as 1842 hours, 47 minutes behind schedule. Parts of Sydney are having heavy rain (as predicted by BOM) with winds at SYD (SW) gusting to 52kmh.

B717 VH-NXE on QF1520 (1715 hours short hop CBR - SYD up up and away at 1758) is a few minutes behind with arrival suggested as about 1842, 32 late.

The 1645 hours MEL - SYD (QF448, VH-VXK) shoud arrive at 1851, 41 late as it (like many other planes) had to hold above Gunning.

With difficult weather in Sydney on 29 August's evening, QF474 (B738 VH-VXP, the 1815 hours MEL - SYD that was up up and away about six to 11 minutes early, at 1819 - good job - is arriving at 2011 as like many other aircraft, it has held above Gunning and then also north of Goulburn. This is relatively unusual but many planes are on approach.

QF478, the 29 August 1845 hours MEL - SYD was in the sky at 1924, about 25 late. B738 VH-VYC then had to hold above Tumut, Gunning and Goulburn - not normal for this to occur at three waypoints - so arrival should be approximately 2126, 76 late, a net loss of about 51 minutes for the journey.

A332 VH-EBL on QF582, the mid afternoon 1430 hours PER across to SYD was in the sky at 1501 (roughly 15 late) but arrival is deferred until 2133, 58 late due to holds above Gunning and north of Goulburn.

Creditably, QF464 (VH-EBB), the 1930 hours ex MEL was in the sky at 1948 (only about five late) but arrival is estimated as 2147, 52 late as it had to hold in three positions like QF478 above.

I wonder if EWR is a better airport for QF11/12 than JFK. Often QF12 outbound from JFK is delayed
I'd vote for that.
For handling, AA are there though it is not a major AA hub, but I imagine most of the QF passengers are arriving at NYC as their destination. If you want to "hub" you would do that from LAX, SFO or DFW anyway.

Speaking of QF12, Wednesday 28 August's departed JFK 98 minutes behind at 1948 hours, arriving LAX at 2215, 75 late. The connecting A388 on QF12 second sector then pushed back at 2322, 52 behind but on Friday 30 SYD arrival is estimated as only six late at 0636 hours.

I can imagine that many patrons of QF11/12 into JFK are US based passengers and maybe also from the New England area. I guess JFK is better than EWR in capturing passengers ex LGA.

QF2202, Friday 30 August's 0705 hours ABX up to SYD did not take off until 0842 (Q400 VH-QOK) so arrival should be at 0948 hours, 93 minutes late. With the heavy rain in SYD yesterday evening, QF2217 arrived ABX 94 late at 2204 hours so the crew required minimum mandated rest. Not that the weather around SYD is much better this morning!

A332 VH-EBD on the 0700 hours MEL - SYD, QF408, did not point skywards until 0759 so arrival is likely at 0914 hours, 49 minutes late.

Again, the B744 on QF63 is delayed, with Friday 30 August departure occurring at 1209, 74 minutes behind schedule. Same day JNB arrival is estimated as 1759, 59 late, delaying the 1910 hours redeye QF64 by at least 35 minutes in pushback.

Later on Friday 30 August 2019, QF923 (A332 VH-EBD, the 1340 hours late lunchtime CNS - SYD airborne at 1441) should arrive through the rain north of Sydney, at gate, at 1721 hours, 46 behind.

Still with 30 August, QF493 (1915 hours SYD - MEL) was in the sky at 2008. This suggests a 37 late arrival at 2127 for B738 VH-VXO.

QF3, the 1915 hours long flight from SYD to HNL using a B744 departed 14 late but arrival same day is predicted for 0930, half an hour behind the timetable.

QF1010, the scheduled 0600 HBA-MEL cancelled this morning and QF1582, the scheduled 0630 HBA-SYD rescheduled to an afternoon departure. Reasons unknown- the allocated aircraft appear to have operated inbound on time last night and this mornings BoM weather observations don’t suggest fog. (The corresponding VA flights departed on time.)

In more on Saturday 31 August, QF97, the normally on time 1010 BNE up to HKG departed 66 minutes late with arrival suggested as 34 late at 1759. The aircraft, A333 VH-QPB, arrived in HKG yesterday (ex MEL as QF29) 40 minutes early at 1640, but then formed QF98, the 2015 hours redeye to BNE that was not airborne until 2247, arriving the capital of the 'Sunshine State' this morning at 0902, 122 late.

Often an aircraft of this size can turn around from 75 minutes upwards, but today this took 134 minutes.

QF423 (B738 VH-VYJ, the 1000 hours SYD - MEL) took off at 1019, only about five minutes late, but it had to hold above Mt Buller so arrival is expected at 1207, 32 minutes tardy.

flydoc, B738 VH-VZC looks to have operated QF1017, the 1950 hours MEL - HBA on Friday 30 August, arriving at gate a minute early at 2104 - as you suggest. This morning (31) it is operating QF1310 - this may be a special flight number - that shows as the 1045 hours HBA - SYD, takeoff occurring at 1053 hours with estimated arrival 1228, seven minutes early.

B717 VH-NXE ran last night's QF1585 (1915 hours SYD down to HBA) and again as you suggest, seems to still be in HBA, having arrived last night five minutes tardy at 2120 hours.

Sometimes changes may be because ATC staff ring in sick (and hence available slots can be reduced, apparently) or there's a shortage of these crucial individuals, but if VA was punctual that may negate that theory.

Continuing with Saturday 31 August, QF19, the 1210 hours lunchtime SYD - MNL is expected to depart at 1440, 150 minutes late with arrival at 2105, 155 late. This will delay the 2000 hours QF20 redeye until at least 2215 in its pushback.

This morning's QF1408 BXG Bendigo - SYD Sydney, crew made the decision to divert to CBR Canberra due to a mechanical issue with its deicing boots.

The flight was operated by Q300 VH-TQH which remains on the ground in CBR.

Also on Saturday 31 August, QF575, the 0825 hours morning SYD - PER was cancelled.

The 0945 hours SYD - WLG, QF161, departed half an hour late with suggested arrival at 1530, 35 late.
