Qantas Delays/Cancellations

At 1933 hours on Thursday 22 August 2019, QF631 (the 1710 hours afternoon BNE down to MEL in the sky at 1800 hours) was holding above West Wyalong, an unusual location on this route. Arrival for B738 VH-VXF will not be earlier than 2016, 41 minutes tardy.

Opposite number, northbound QF632 (VH-VXM) is the 1820 hours ex MEL up up and away at 1916, with a 37 minute late, 2107 hours BNE at gate arrival the tip.

The SYD to MEL 1745 hours scheduled flight, QF457 has VH-VYJ and was in the sky at 1840, so at gate arrival looks to be 2013, 53 down.

The 1815 hours early evening QF474 was not in the sky until 1933. VH-VZL should have an at gate arrival around 2041 tonight mid evening, 61 late.

QF688 (1710 hours ADL across to MEL up up and away at 1824 with VH-VXB is arriving at 2003, 63 late.

Friday 23rd of Auguse sees cancellation on the following services: QF411 SYD-MEL 7 30 hours service, QF421 SYD-MEL 9 30, QF762 PER-MEL 8 10, QF410 SYD-MEL 7 15 hours, QF430 MEL-SYD 12 00 hours, QF769 MEL-PER 12 40 hours.

The diverted to CHC QF28 (Wednesday 21 departure) and hence overnight delayed B744 pushed back in NZ at 0830 hours on Friday 23 August, arriving SYD at 0922.

The B744 on QF63 is frequently delayed. Today it departed SYD at 1158, 63 behind with same day JNB arrival estimated as 1748, 48 minutes tardy, again meaning QF64 (the redeye back to SYD) will be late off its blocks.

'The 27' (B744, long flight SYD - SCL) is the 1235 hours departure that did so at 1317, so arrival is expected (same day) at 1203 hours, 58 late.

Later on 23 August, B717 VH-NXR is operating an empty working, QF6203 that was in the sky from SYD at 1547. It may be heading only to CBR.

QF684 (B738 VH-VYB, the 1355 hours ADL - MEL) took off at 1438 so predicted at gate arrival has become 1626 hours, 41 minutes behind schdule, not helped by having to hold above Bendigo.

It looks as if MEL is down to single runway operations, creating delays: confirmation from anyone at the airport would be appreciated.

Just what the doctor ordered during Friday's afternoon peak period!

QF819 (Friday 23 August, B738 VH-XZD, the 1710 hours CBR down to MEL in the sky at 1734, only about 10 - 15 minutes behind schedule) is arriving at 1901, 41 late as it had to hold in the usual position above Mt Buller.

The 1645 hours SYD - MELO airborne at 1716, QF499 with VH-VZE is similar. Predicted at gate arrival is 1909, 49 behind.

QF478 MEL-SYD 18 45 hours, QF484 MEL-SYD 19 15, QF493 SYD-MEL 19 15, QF492 MEL-SYD 20 30, QF559 BNE-SYD 21 05 hours services were cancelled.

QF478 MEL-SYD 18 45 hours, QF484 MEL-SYD 19 15, QF493 MEL-SYD 19 15, QF492 MEL-SYD 20 30, QF559 BNE-SYD 21 05 hours services were cancelled.

Again one has to wonder what happens to booked passengers? Perhaps demand is so low at present that there's sufficient vacant seats on other flights, but do some passengers get told to spend the night in their origin city?

And if some booked on the last scheduled BNE - SYD (QF559 at 2105 hours ex BNE) couldn't make it for the 2035 hours southbound (assuming it had seats and they'd been rebooked onto it), what do they do? Arrive with luggage at 2025 and plead for an hotel to be paid for by QF?

QF493 is a SYD - MEL at 1915 hours, not MEL - SYD.

Continuing with 23 August, QF631 from BNE down to MEL is arriving at 2039 hours, 64 minutes behind schedule with VH-XZP.

The 1800 hours SYD - MEL QF459 is similar, with A332 VH-EBK is arriving at gate 66 late at an expected 2041 tonight.

Thursday 22 August's QF12 from LAX to SYD is punctual, but QF94 to MEL is not, with Saturday 24 August 2019 arrival for this A388 expected at 0852, 82 late as it took off on Friday (small hours) at 0018 hours, 98 minutes after scheduled departure. As this A388 normally forms QF35 northwards to SIN, it should be on time.

Stone the crows!

QF8, a flight that's had its fair share of recent troubles was timetabled to depart DFW at 2225 hours on Thursday 22 August but it has been delayed by a day so altered pushback should be 2235 on Friday 23. Arrival will be 0630 on Sunday 25 instead of 0625 on Saturday 24. VH-OQG is the aircraft marooned in DXB.

As a result, the Saturday 24 August QF11 (0935 hours SYD to LAX) has been cancelled. QF12 (LAX - SYD) and QF94 (LAX - MEL) tomorrow night ex LAX remain displaying as operating but one guesses 'the 12' may get the boot.

Any reason known for the QF28 diversion? Would the operating crew have continued after overnight rest, or a new crew transferred in from Aus?

Can't say re the first part, but given the overnight rest, I'm guessing the same crew would have continued to SYD.

In addition to the cancellation of QF11 on Saturday 24 August, QF93, the 0900 hours MEL - LAX is delayed in its pushback until 1200 'high noon.' Perhaps some passengers booked on 'the 11' are being flown down to MEL to occupy any unbooked QF93 seats?

This means QF11 across the USA from LAX to JFK will have far fewer passengers (and luggage) than usual as it is never held for a delay of much more than 45 minutes for the inbounds, given how the aircraft forms QF12 that evening back from JFK and then usually QF16 to BNE.

A388 VH-OQB is returning from attention in AUH and should arrive in SYD on Saturday 24 August at 1202 hours after becoming airborne yesterday at 1626 hours mid to late afternoon.

QF93 on Saturday 24 August pushed back in MEL at 1207 hours, 187 late with LAX arrival predicted as 0910, 165 late.

Friday night, 23 August saw QF64 depart JNB 36 late at 1946 hours (as its aircraft, the B744 on QF63, was delayed.) On Saturday 24, SYD arrival was 32 late at 1527 hours.

QF61 ex BNE (0935 hours to NRT) is not often tardy but today it was by 123 minutes in departure. Arrival should be 1935 tonight, 100 late. Tonight's 2005 hours QF80 from NRT back down to MEL is predicted to depart 45 late. This swap in NRT is often the case, but sometimes 'the 61' can form 'the 62' and 'the 79' forms 'the 80.' Maintenance requirements in BNE may be the reason for the unpredictable variation.

The Saturday 1200 'high noon' OOL - MEL, QF881 (B738 VH-VZB) was in the sky at 1307 with arrival suggested as 1516 hours, 56 late.

On Friday 23 August, the USA sectors LAX - JFK - LAX did not operate as QF11/QF12 were cancelled. This (nowadays) is unusual, but occurred because that day's QF15 departed BNE at 1336 hours, 196 minutes late, arriving LAX at 0957 mid morning, 237 minutes behind schedule.

Friday's QF8 pushed back in distant DFW at 0038 on Saturday 24, 133 late with Sunday 25 SYD arrival estimated as 0825, two hours late.

On Saturday 24 August, after A388 VH-OQB that had been in AUH since 14 May earlier arrived in to SYD (see above), stablemate VH-OQF took off at 2106 mid evening from SYD proceeding to AUH for a major check.

Meanwhile VH-OQK remains in DRS (Germany). It has been there since 16 July 2019.

Therefore, the available A388 fleet remains at 10, meaning no spare as timetables for QF1/2/7/8/11/12/93/94 require 10 aircraft.
