Qantas Delays/Cancellations

While AFFer jb747 recently gave us what turned out to be a 'red herring' fog warning for the next morning for BNE, MEL and SYD airports - not his fault, just the way it didn't materialise as much as predicted - tomorrow (Monday 24 June) may have more severe fog in Melbourne.

Earlier on Sunday 23 June, B744 VH-OJU on QF27, the 1235 hours SYD - SCL took off at 1330 so same day arrival is 1139, 34 late.

B789 VH-ZNE on the 1210 hours LHR - PER QF10 did not take off until 1409, so Sunday 24 arrival was 1316 hours, 81 late. This delayed the second sector with it airborne at 1524 fr suggested 2037 arrival this evening, 37 late. This will delay QF49 (2055 hours MEL - SFO) by about 35 minutes in the latter's pushback.

B744 VH-OEF on the 1915 hours SYD - HNL QF3 was in the sky at 2006, so expected at gate arrival - same day - is 0900, half an hour behind the timetable.

I was informed last night QF93 this Sat 22 Jun has been cancelled. I have been rebooked to LAX via AKL on AirNZ

Any frequent flyer status, cabin class,
Any other compensation
Which ANZ flight number
Were you given the same cabin class?
What was you overall delay?

Shunting passengers over to NZ 2/6 makes sense because these flights ex AKL depart in the evening 1930/2145 hrs allowing time for passengers to get across the “ditch”.
I wonder if the relatively new trans-tasman partnership encourages such cooperations.

The only thing I don’t like about ANZ 777-200 is that Economy (Y) seats are 10 across. Now the QF A380 Y cabin main deck is also 10 across but it’s 700mm (approx 15 inches) wider than the 777-200.

QF594 PER-BNE on 23rd June (VH-XZK) didn't take off until 18:01, 76 late. Estimated arrival 00:08, same time.

Kinda off topic, but might as well mention it while I'm here. I note that there are 3 QF flights and 2 VA flight fully booked on said route tomorrow (24 June) Not surprising of course because of State of Origin but let's see if it has any effect.

The first I learned of cancellation was via email sent to me Wed night 19/6 which I read Thu morning. (No SMS) . It informed me that QF93 on Sat had been cancelled and that my booking had been updated and to check my booking online for details.
I’m WP and was booked in Bus Class (D) with upgrade request to F.
The flights offered to me were QF153 to AKL then NZ6 to LAX, both bus class (I was assigned 2A on ANZ)
I did ring up QF for options (via BNE, HKG) but via AKL was best option.
I was able to check my luggage through to LAX. Points and SC will be as per original booking.
Original ETA was 0625, new ETA 1245, so just over 6 hour delay in arrival (I am attending a conference here in Anaheim so essentially lost first day).
No compensation was offered (although I didn’t think of asking for any either).

I since found out that the A380 was supposedly hit by a catering truck at LAX causing it to be taken out of service for repairs. I heard someone say that this also caused the flight out of SYD on Fri to be also cancelled?

The posts above have details of various cancellatons. A388 VH-OQK is arriving in MEL at about 0753 this morning, Monday 24 June on QF94 ex LAX as its return to carrying passengers trip after being hit by the catering truck in LAX on 10 June, so it was inoperable for more than 10 days.

Quickstatus, it's possible that QF asked VA and DL for assistance in moving stranded passengers but VA has its own problems with one B773ER inoperable in LAX due to a fuel tank problem that has required its transfer to the Victorville, California airport for repairs. In the VA delays/cancellations thread, various changes to VA's LAX flights ex BNE and MEL in particular have been noted.
 
QF36, the Sunday 23 June 2015 hours SIN down to MEL (A388 VH-OQI) did not take off until 0017 on Monday 24 so arrival (if MEL remains fog-free) is expected at 0902 hours, 207 minutes late. This would normally badly delay QF93, the 0900 hours MEL - LAX, but it looks like this morning, QF94 (arriving with back in operation VH-OQK half an hour late at 0800 hours) is forming 'the 93' so it may get away by about 0945 if all goes well and there's still no fog. However, there's a chance that passengers bound for JFK will be shunted onto AA flights ex LAX.

Further south, QF1010, first of the morning at a scheduled 0600 hours from HBA (B738 VH-VYL) did not become airborne until 0641 so with having to hold in Bass Strait, arrival is suggested as 0827, 72 late.

Q400 VH-LQF on QF2280 (0630 hours LST - MEL in the sky at 0648) also had to do some racecourse circuits above Bass Strait so its arrival should be 0831, 46 late.

The 0715 hours MEL - CHC (B738 VH-XZB) took off at 0802 on runway 27 so delayed arrival is 1318, 43 late.

In further on Monday 245 June, QF405, the 0630 hours SYD down to MEL that was airborne at 0653, about 10 late has B738 VH-XZM and should arrive (after holding at the usual waypoint above Mt Buller) at about 0843, 38 minutes late.

QF403 has VH-XZN and is the 0645 hours southbound that took off at 0704. Having also to hold, its arrival should be 36 late at 0856.

The 0640 hours ADL to MEL (QF674, VH-VYJ) was on time in its takeoff at 0652 but due to holding south of Bendigo, arrival is likely at about 0905, 35 late.

QF1538 (the 0640 hours HBA - SYD airborne at 0708) has B717 VH-NXI and should arrive at 0903, 33 late.

Arrival for QF36 has been further delayed to a predicted 0934 hours, 239 late as the A388 had to hold above Horsham and Warracknabeal for some time.

Much more of a delay and QF35 today, the 1155 hours MEL - SIN will be delayed.

QF565 (0620 hours SYD - PER, A332 VH-EBM) took off at a delayed 0929 so arrival should be at 1103 hours, 98 late for A332 VH-EBM.

QF2051 has Q400 VH-QOA and is the 0810 hours morning MEL down to DPO that pointed skywards at 0851, so expected arrival is 0946, 31 late.

The 0610 hours BNE - MEL (QF605, VH-VYA) took off at 0640 (15 plus minutes late) but arrival is not suggested until 0932, 57 late due to an extensive hold above Tocumwal and a later one east of Bendigo.

Northbound QF608, the 0810 hours MEL - BNE was not in the sky until 0925 so B738 VH-VYL will be at least 55 minutes late.

QF838 (0815 hours MEL - DRW) took off at 0914 with arrival suggested as 1257, 42 late for VH-VXK.

Later on Monday 24 June 2019, QF420, the 0930 hours MEL - SYD was in the sky at 1041 hours (B738 VH-VYA) so arrival is a suggested 1206 hours, 71 late.

A333 VH-QPE arrived SYD at 0607 hours, two minutes late ex CGK on QF42 but its departure on QF8, the 1010 hours SYD - SIN was tardy with takeoff at 1120. One reason may have been passengers delayed on connecting flights. Arrival should be 41 late at 1731.

QF93 is showing as a predicted 1100 hours ex MEL, two hours late, so JFK-bound users will most certainly not be on QF11 across the USA.

The 0950 hours SYD - BKK (A333 VH-QPF) was in the sky at 1046 with predicted arrival of 1738, 58 late.

Although Sunday 23 June's QF1 (A388 VH-OQC) arrived in SIN 26 minute early at 2149 hours, departure of the second sector to LHR was delayed with takeoff on Monday 24 at 0111 hours meaning estimated LHR arrival at 0724, 59 late. The previious five LHR arrivals of QF1 have been between 20 minutes and around two hours late, with a typical delay of 45 - 50 minutes. This is not pleasing to LHR management who a few years back when QF was operating via DXB called its representative in to the office to explain why QF flights were so often delayed.

UPDATE: QF93 (A388 VH-OQA) departed at 1056 and promptly took off at 1111 hours. Arrival should be (same day) 0755 hours, 90 late.

QF485, the 1025 hours morning MEL - PER has A332 VH-EBN that pointed skywards at 1137, so arrival should be at 1317 hours, 52 late.

The 1235 hours SYD - DFW, QF7 is predicted to push back 55 minutes tardy.

Showiing how unless aircraft struggle to be punctual after severe morning delays unless they have a lengthy lunchtime layover or a return flight in the middle of the day is cancelled, QF427, the very much off peak 1100 hours SYD down to MEL (B738 VH-XZM) was in the sky at 1225 hours with mooted arrival 1340, 65 late.

pjm99au uses the adjective 'interesting' to describe tonight's SYD - MEL flights. Delayed travellers may prefer to use other descriptors.

Northbound QF880 is the 1205 hours MEL - OOL that was up up and away at 1301 hours, with B738 VH-VZQ likely to be at its destination gate 40 late at 1450 hours.

B789 VH-ZND on QF127, the 1020 hours SYD - HKG was not up up and away until 1140 so tardy arrival is a suggested 1847 in the early evening, 47 late.

A388 VH-OQI arrived very late (see above) on this morning's QF36 (redeye ex SIN) and in a reversal of usual current practice, it formed itself with QF35, the 1155 hours MEL - SIN not airborne until 1309 hours. Arrival should be at 1853 tonight, 58 minutes tardy.

QF118 from HKG to SYD has A333 VH-QPI and is arriving at 1328 hours, 218 minutes behind schedule as it did not take off until 0253 this morning despite a scheduled 2235 hours pushback. It had run empty - 'ferried' - between SYD and BNE yesterday as QF6007, arriving at 1728, 43 late. It then formed a baldy delayed QF97, the 1010 hours scheduled BNE - HKG that was in the sky at 1852, arriving at 0112 hours this morning, 467 minutes late, explaining the delay to 'the 118.'

The PEK down to SYD QF108 is also behind schedule, though not as badly with a 47 late, 1407 hours arrival the likelihood for A332 VH-EBP.

QF524 from SYD up to BNE (VH-VYA) is the 1200 'high noon' up up and away at 1312, so resultant predicted arrival is 1425, 55 down.

In further on Monday 24 June 2019, QF1 (the 1555 hours SYD - SIN and on to LHR) was still taxiing as at 1706, so arrival at the intermediate stop for VH-VOK is likely to be at least 55 minutes tardy.

A332 VH-EBV from CNS down to SYD on QF923 is arriving at 1713, 38 late.
 
Later on 24 June 2019, QF476 (lunchtime 1245 hours from PER across to MEL, in the sky at 1426) should arrive with A332 VH-EBN at 1947 hours, 92 minutes late. With foggy conditions in MEL this morning and significant rain around SYD, it hasn't been the best of Mondays for timekeeping.

QF810 (B738 VH-VXN, the 1415 hours PER - ADL airborne at 1457) should arrive at 1907 hours, 32 late.

The PER - SYD QF580 should be at its arrival gate at 1925 tonight, 35 late. It has the very welcome B744 VH-OEE, so perhaps some AFFers are aboard, in part thanks to AFF stalwart and 'on air' podcast presenter Mattg (with his mellifluous 'radio voice.') Earlier today it was on QF575 from SYD across to PER that arrived nine late at 1139 hours.

Also on Monday 24 June, QF1522 (1835 hours early evening CBR - SYD) was in the sky at a very late 2059. B717 VH-YQY should arrive at 2138, 128 late.
 
QF608 (0810 hours MEL - BNE, B738 VH-VXJ) took off on Tuesday 25 June at 0857 so estimated arrival is 1053 hours, 33 minutes behind schedule.

Earlier, due to the delayed QF35 yesterday, A388 VH-OQI on QF36 arrived MEL (ex SIN) at 0651, 76 late.

VH-VXL on QF838, the morning 0815 hours MEL - DRW was in the sky at 0902. Predicted at gate arrival is half an hour tardy at 1245.
 
QF63, the 1055 hours Tuesday 25 June SYD - JNB departed at 1122 with this B744's estimated arrival becoming 41 late at 1741 hours.

A333 VH-QPC on QF81 (1010 hours morning SYD - SIN) was in the sky at 1118 with suggested arrival at 1727, 37 late.

Earlier, QF575 (that yesterday was a B744) returned to an A332 today (VH-EBP) but this 0825 hours flight did not become airborne until 0934, so tardy arrival is expected at 1206 hours, 36 behind.

B744 VH-OEG on QF27 (1235 hours SYD long flight across to SCL) pointed skywards at 1343, so arrival should be 1151 same day, 46 late.

A388 VH-OQE on QF8, the 24 June 2225 hours DFW - SYD took off at 2323 so Wednesday 26 arrival should be at 0712 hours, 47 late.

Recorded above was how A388 VH-OQK was delayed departing SYD on Monday 24's QF1. The flight was in SIN from 2319, 64 late with takeoff on Tuesday 25 June at 0140 hours meaning projected LHR 0752 hours arrival, 87 late. In the last few days, QF1 has consistently been delayed into London.

Which is, of course, the problem with any form of weather forecast. Unless you do it retrospectively, it's just a best guess.

Mind you, I got it right at Albury on Friday...and spent 3 hours cooling my heels. The downside to that was it dropped me into Sydney (a place I detest driving), right on peak hour, with a 3 hour drive to do. Any time someone tells me how wonderful a city it is, I wonder if they ever have cause to use the roads.
