Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Storms in BNE (and WTB) have been the case on Friday 15 March afternoon and evening as QF633, the scheduled 1740 hours BNE down to MEL airborne at 1948 (B738 VH-VYC) is arriving at an estimated 2248 hours late tonight, 108 minutes behind schedule.

QF490 (2000 hours MEL - SYD that took off at 2116) has B738 VH-VXN and should arrive at 2223 hours, 58 minutes late.

QF562 (1630 hours SYD up to BNE) was in the sky at 2203 so B738 VH-VYL should arrive at 2216, 316 minutes tardy.

Delays at the Gold Coast

Melb QF881 had to wait for Syd to back out to get a gate (see photo)

Boarding calls come 5 minutes after published departure time
I'd have taken your small delay today.

In BNE 6 SYD flights were cancelled. The decision to send the aircraft scheduled for QF563 to PER over 2 hours later instead had me stunned. And even weirder was that QF559 operated. Never book the last flight of the night in case there are weather delays.

And for anyone ever doubting I'm blessed the checkin system is down at the Pullman. Seriously? Leave me alone.

On Saturday 16 March 2019, QF2021 from ARM to SYD, the 1000 hours took off at 1113. A320 VH-VQR should be at its destination apron at 1219, 59 late.

QF424 (B738 VH-VYZ, the midmorning 1030 hours MEL - SYD) was in teh sky at 1148 so expected arrival has become 1300 hours, 65 minutes tardy.

In further on Saturday 16, QF11, the 1010 hours SYD - LAX is expected to depart at 1300 this afternoon, arriving same day at 0835, 155 minutes late.

Rather optimistically, the connecting QF11 (B789) is predicted to depart LAX at 0915 hours, 55 late, arriving distant JFK at 1705, 35 minutes behind.

QF93 from MEL is also badly delayed, with this 0940 hours departure displaying as a 1200 'high noon', but by 1255 it doesn't appear to have pushed back.

UPDATE: VH-OQB (A388) as QF11 was airborne from SYD at 1322 hours, about 165 minutes late.

Remarkably similar, VH-OQK on QF93 from MEL was in the sky at 1325, but due to the longer distance and earlier scheduled departure time is even less punctual, at about 200 minutes late on takeoff.

QF11 and QF93 respectively are estimated arrivals of 0835 and 0930 hours in LAX so given that a large delay to the transcontinental USA QF11 then affected QF12 from JFK and then the onward flights ex LAX QF16 to BNE, QF12 to SYD and QF94 it may be more likely that passengers from 'the 11' and 'the 93' are transferred in LAX to AA flights across to JFK. We'll see.

If passengers are efficient and security queues not long, is the quickest that passengers (and luggage) can alight/be transferred from arriving ex-Oz flights to the transcon QF11 about 70 minutes from arrival at gate to pushback? I don't recall seeing it much quicker when inbound flights are delayed.

UPDATE: QF11 from SYD's estimated arrival has become 0850 and QF93's remains at 0930, but the connecting transcon QF11 has changed to a projected 0945 houres ex LAX, 85 late. 55 minutes for a connection between the two '11s' is very fast, perhaps unattainable. It means at best a 65 minute late arrival in JFK at 1735 on Saturday and hence a delayed departure for QF12 back across the USA to LAX.

In further on Saturday 16...

UPDATE: QF11 from SYD's estimated arrival has become 0850 and QF93's remains at 0930, but the connecting transcon QF11 has changed to a projected 0945 hours ex LAX, 85 late. 55 minutes for a connection between the two '11s' is very fast, perhaps unattainable. It means at best a 65 minute late arrival in JFK at 1735 on Saturday and hence a delayed departure for QF12 back across the USA to LAX.

QF's prediction proved to be out by a long way.

The QF11 ex SYD arrived LAX at 0842 hours, 162 minutes late. QF11 (B789) from LAX to JFK departed at 1024, 124 late with JFK arrival suggested as 110 late at 1815 hours. This will delay the returning QF12 USA transcon flight.

UPDATE: After arriving at JFK at 1815, the B789 had a fast 78 minute turnaround - about the best achievable - with departure at 1933 hours, 93 late meaning LAX arrival at 2220 hours, 85 minutes behind schedule.

Again too optimistically, QF claims the connecting A388 for SYD can depart Los Angeles on Saturday 16 March at 2300 hours. One doubts luggage and passengers (plus any freight) can transfer in 45 minutes. It also claims that 'the 16' can depart at 2345 hours, only 25 late. The latter is possible, but going on previous observations, unlikely.

On St Patrick's Day, 17 March, luck of the Irish has QF675, the 0830 hours from MEL across to ADL not having become airborne until 0955 hours. B738 VH-VZC should arrive at 1028, 68 minutes late.

Saturday 16 March's QF9 departed MEL five early at 1700 on the dot, arriving PER at 1734, 36 early. However departure was seven minutes late at 1947 with expected arrival in LHR half an hour behind at 0535 hours on Sunday 17.

Also on Sunday 17 March, QF866 (1035 hours SYD - HTI that took off at 1139 with B738 VH-VZI) looks to be arriving at 1244, 44 late. This was the first sector for this aircraft since 1800 hours last night, so one possible reason for the delay might be waiting connecting passengers.

The 1130 hours SYD - SIN (QF81) pushed back at 1217 so Lion City arrival is forecast at 1735, 50 late.

The 1250 hours long B744 flight, QF27 (SYD to SCL) is expected to depart half an hour late.

QF19 was showing as punctual but has been delayed to an expected hour late ex SYD at 1325 for MNL, where arrival should be at 1835, 65 late.

Wednesday Feb 20, QF24 BKK - SYD, flight was delayed for over an hour. There was also no IFE and was compensated with 700 baht. Another delay upon arrival in SYD because of no available airbridge (not sure what you call this). Overall a very long flight.

Also on Saturday 16 March, QF64 (1850 hours JNB redeye to SYD) departed at 1914 and was in the sky at 1928. B744 VH-OJU should arrive SYD at 1615, 40 late on St Patrick's Day.

As it sometimes does, this ageing aircraft is forming Sunday's QF73, the 1755 hours SYD - SFO that has just been altered to depart at a predicted 1820. 125 minutes should be more than sufficient to 'reverse' the 744.

Also on Sunday 17, QF441 (1430 hours mid afternoon SYD down to MEL, B738 VH-VYJ) took off at 1521 with expected arrival at 1638 hours, 33 minutes tardy.

QF722 from ASP down to ADL, the lunchtime 1210 hours was up up and away at 1320, about 55 late. B738 VH-VZC looks to be arriving 65 late at 1610 hours. On its first flight this morning at a civilised scheduled 0830 hours from MEL to ADL (QF675), the plane did not become airborne until 0955, about 70 late so with QF723 to ASP the next flight, it has not been possible to recover more than a few minutes. On a Saturday this might not matter so much given slow demand on Saturday afternoons and consequent lengthy layovers in some cases but on Sundays: a different story.

In more on Sunday 17 March 2019, VH-VYI (B738) on QF463 (1830 hours SYD down to MEL) took off at 1952 so arrival at 2058, 53 late is expected.

B738 VH-XZM on QF1020, the 1730 hours late afternoon HBA up to SYD took off at 1818 but was further delayed by a hold west of Goulburn. Arrival should be at 2024, 59 late.

The SYD up to MCY QF1578 has B717 VH-YQT and should be at gate at 1957 hours, a lengthy 97 late.

QF546 from SYD up to BNE is a little better with B738 VH-XZN expected to arrive at 1948, 48 late.

The 1710 hours MEL up to BNE, QF628 is in the hands of B738 VH-VYH. It was in the sky at 1835 with likely arrival at 1934, 74 late.

QF45 (1725 hours MEL - DPS airborne at 1841) has B738 VH-XZC and should arrive at 2118, 48 late.

QF868 (B738 VH-VXG) is the 1820 hours SYD - OOL that took off at 1918, so arrival is suggested as 1931 hours, 46 late.

Sunday 17 March also saw QF20, the 1900 hours MNL - SYD redeye depart 59 minutes late, arriving on Monday 18 at 0659, 39 down.

Saturday 16's QF12 from LAX to SYD was delayed due to the connecting QF12 from JFK being late (a chain that had commenced in BNE with QF15 delayed) so on Monday 18, it should arrive at 0902 hours, 87 late.

'The 16' was similar, arriving BNE at 0737, 82 late. QF94 from LAX to MEL departed at 2336, 41 late on Saturday late evening so Monday arrival is 0932, 42 late.

QF36 on Sunday 17 pushed back in SIN at 2124 hours, 104 minutes late, arriving MEL on Monday at 0740, 100 minutes behind schedule. QF93 to LAX is expected to be off blocks 50 minutes late at 1030 hours.

The B744 on QF64 (JNB - SYD redeye) should arrive this afternoon at 1605, half an hour tardy.

Also on Monday 18 March 2019, B738 VH-VXH on QF495 (0710 hours SYD down to MEL) has not had a great start to the day as takeoff was not until 0825 hours. Expected arrival is 0946, 61 late with some aircraft having to hold above Mt Buller.

A332 VH-EBA on QF411 (0725 hours SYD - MEL that was in the sky at 0828) should arrive at gate at 0946 hours, 46 late. B738 VH-VXI on the following QF413 (the 0740 ex SYD) was not airborne until 0838, so arrival is predicted for 0955, 40 down. QF477, the 0750 hours (VH-VZC) took off from SYD at 0841 so at gate MEL arrival is 0959 hours, 34 late.

The CBR down to MEL QF809 has B738 VH-VYA with this 0810 hours scheduled departure airborne at 0850, resulting in a suggested 0950 hours arrival, half an hour behind schedule.

Whatever the cause, this is very poor peak period timekeeping compared with what a properly run high speed rail network could deliver - in many countries, CBD to CBD travel that's punctual 99 per cent or more of the time, and all things considered, quicker than train/Uber/taxi/private car in SYD to airacft to bus/private car/Uber in Melbourne that business travellers must endure at present.

B744 VH-OEB on the 1135 hours Monday 18 March 2019 SYD - JNB QF63 long haul departed at 1231 but took off at a delayed 1307 hours. Predicted arrival is 1729, 54 late, so the 1850 hours overnight QF64 will be unable to depart until at least 1910.

QF61 is not often overly delayed ex BNE but an exception was Monday with pushback 72 minutes behind at 1032 meaning a suggested NRT arrival tonight at 1847, 77 late. As a consequence, QF80 (1920 hours NRT - MEL) is predicted to depart on the dot of 2000 hours for Tuesday 19 arrival of 0825, 25 minutes tardy.

QF81, the 1130 hours late morning SYD up to SIN pushed back 53 minutes tardy. At gate arrival should be 1731, 46 minutes behind the timetable.

The 1335 hours SYD - PEK is predicted to depart 110 late at 1525 hours mid afternoon for an 0010 hours (Tuesday 19) arrival, 115 minutes late. This will put back the 2345 hours QF108 to about 0130 (at least) ex PEK.

QF43 is another QFi flight that is mostly punctual but tonight it should depart SYD at 1755, an hour late for the excitement of DPS.

In further on Monday 18 March, QF93 is unexpectedly badly late, with this scheduled 0940 hours MEL - LAX airborne at 1427. Arrival for VH-OQA should be at 1019 hours, 249 minutes late. Connecting passengers to JFK will probably be placed on AA flights.

QF35 appears to have departed MEL late (again) by about 1 hour and 45 mins. Anticipated arrival SIN now 1823 (local). QF have advised affected PAX that QF36 is expected to depart SIN at 2020 (local). We will see how they go !!

As previous pages attest, this A388 is delayed quite frequently. This morning, QF94 arrived at 0924 hours, 34 late, which in theory is heaps of time to form the 1220 hours QF35. Not so. VH-OQB is the aircraft.

Meanwhile QF881 from OOL to MEL (VH-VYA) should arrive at 1537 hours mid afternoon, 42 late.

As at 1400 AEST (1500 AEST), ferocious looking storms are approaching both BNE and OOL from the west, so expect delays.

During Monday 18 March 2019's evening, QF627 from BNE to MEL, the 1610 that was in the sky at 1648 (B738 VH-VZE) should arrive at 2001 hours, 31 late.

The SYD - MEL QF456 (1745 hours ex SYD, but airborne 1844 with VH-VXN) is arriving at 2001 hours, 41 minutes tardy.

SYD - CBR QF1525 has B717 VH-YQT and looks to be arriving at 2011 tonight, 31 minutes late.

Meanwhile empty ('ferry') flight QF6121 (B738 VH-XZD) is operating from SYD down to MEL with takeoff at 1926 meaning arrival at around 2035 hours.
