Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Do many BKK QF customers connect onwards?...Has the 787-900 improved overall punctuality across the group ?

Only a QF staff member with access to bookings and connections would be able to answer first question.

As there have only been six B789s delivered (and when I last checked VH---F was yet to start carrying passengers), they are a very small percentage of total flights operated, even if we limited latter to a QFi analysis. QF9/QF10 are mostly punctual; QF96 (especially) and to a much lesser degree QF95 are not. The MEL - BNE - MEL domestics operated by a B789 are subject to the same problems as many other domestic flights.

On 22 August, QF33 ended up departing later than predicted, with pushback at 1159 meaning likely arrival tonight 84 minutes late at 2034 hours.

QF23 was away at 1054 (64 down) so arrival has become 1724, 44 late.

The B744 on long haul QF27 (1135 hours SYD across to SCL) should depart at 1300, so arrival is estimated as 1215 hours, 65 late.

The 1210 hours SYD - MNL, QF19 is again delayed with departure predicted for 1245. QF20 tonight back to SYD will not be able to depart on time at 2000 hours.

UPDATE: QF27 took longer to take off than the software had expected, so arrival in SCL is predicted for 1232 hours, 82 minutes late. This will delay QF28 returning.

Hello All,

Just wondering what flight forms QF23 each day as it looks like it is constantly delayed over the past month or so.

...Just wondering what flight forms QF23 each day as it looks like it is constantly delayed over the past month or so.

daturtle, QF23 always forms flight QF24 in Bangkok, as the latter is the redeye back down overnight to Sydney.

I suspect you mean 'what flight is QF23 formed by each morning?' (that is, in Sydney).

You can look this up. Just type in 'QF23' to Google, Bing or other search engine.

Then find the Flight Radar 24 listing. Open it, and scroll down to the last few days' departures. You will find an aircraft registration (such as 'VH-QPA' next to each day. Click on it, and by working backwards you can see which flight formed QF23.

The answer seems to be that it varies. Mostly the flight is an A333 but during teh next week more A332s are rostered for some reason.

This morning, it was A332 VH-EBL that arrived in SYD on QF408 (ex MEL) seven minutes late at 0832 (FR24 shows '0827' but five minutes to get from touchdown to the airport gate must be added). It then would have had to be hauled across to the international terminal: this takes time as you know.

(A332 VH-EBL is one of the four A332 aircraft - thank you, mannej, as it had thought it was only two - aircraft that are suitable for the SYD - PEK QF107/QF108 rotation as they have larger galleys and better crew rest facilities, but these flights were planned to not operate yesterday. EBG and EBL are referred to by AFFer moa999 as 'unrefurbished.')

Yesterday (21 August), QF23 was A333 VH-QPB that had arrived in SYD on the previous evening as QF462 (ex MEL) at 2022, so in that case it enjoyed 13 hours plus overnight in Sydney before it was due to depart for BKK. This maximises the chance of a punctual departure.

On Friday 18 August, another day when QF23 ran late, it was formed by QF130, the redeye from PVG in mainland China,. arriving SYD at 0837, 12 minutes late. Although in that case the arrival and departure were at the international terminal, it had little hope of being on time and took off for BKK at 1054, arriving the Thai capital at 1734, 54 late.

But it then upon coming back to SYD 'formed its own' - QF24 became QF23 on Saturday morning, so it was only 17 late in arriving the gate at Bangkok.

As you can see there's no discernible pattern.

VA helpfully seems to give FR24 its aircraft rosters for a few days in advance, and while it doesn't always stick to these, they can be very helpful. QF however does not. You can compare gate numbers allocated through QF website's flight status and usually work out which aircraft is going where, but that can be tedious.

If time is important, TG may be a better choice.

Thanks for the reply Melburnian. I had attempted to track the tail numbers but being a pleb unpaid guest on flight radar I didn't have access. Interesting to see that it isn't consistent in terms of where the aircraft comes from into Sydney. Luckily I'm not sensitive to schedule and am comfortably ensconced in the lounge just curious.

Thanks again!

You don't need a paid subscription to access flightradar24, however you do need to pay to access some areas of the site. Without a subscription, you can see 7 days history for a flight number/aircraft reg and can view live tracking for 30 minutes before requiring a refresh.

If you want to check history on a given route or aircraft, you can go through the trackers at QANTAS Trackers

Later on 22 August 2018, QF1522 (B717 VH-NXQ, the 1830 hours CBR - SYD that did not take off until 1919) should arrive at 2004 hours, 39 late.

QF117 has A332 VH-EBS and was in the sky from SYD at 1840 with arrival at 0116 hours, 195 late on Thursday 23 August in HKG.

Rather optimistically, QF118, the 2325 hours HKG - SYD tonight is put back to 0220 hours on Thursday but 0235 or later is more likely. SYD arrival tomorrow should be after 1325 in lieu of the timetabled 1050 hours.

QF2703 (operated by Alliance Airlines) from ISA down to BNE has F100 VH-UQA. This 1855 hours flight took off at 1944 for a suggested 2148 hours, 33 late arrival.

Thursday 23 August sees QF130, the redeye from PVG to SYD suggested as arriving at 0942, 77 late.

QF24 from BKK arrived 45 minutes behind schedule at 0710 hours.

On Thursday 23 August, QF1 departed SYD 83 late at 1716 hours so the SIN stop is predicted as 2350 tonight (95 late) to 0110 hours 75 late, Friday 24) with LHR arrival 0800 hours (65 minutes behind schedule).

QF announced a bumper profit (though the market didn't like it, given increasing costs) but it matched that with some significant delays, especially ex Sydney today.

'The 19' departed SYD earlier, at 1353 hours (103 late) so MNL arrival is suggested as 2010 tonight, 100 minutes late. QF20, the timetabled 2000 hours will be unable to depart prior to 2125.

QF143 (0955 hours SYD across to AKL) was off blocks at 1122, arriving at 1620, 80 late.

QF15 (1010 hours B744 from BNE to LAX) is often punctual but today was not one of those, as departure was at 1131. Arrival should be (same day) at 0720 hours, 80 late, which will delay the onwards QF11, the timetabled 0820 hours to JFX. Consequently, QF12 on Thursday (1810 hours JFK across to LAX) will also be tardy, although it often picks up time on a gate-to-gate basis.

The B744 on QF63 pushed back in SYD at 1134, 39 late with JNB arrival forecast as 50 minutes late at 1750.

A third B744, QF73, the lunchtime 1245 hours SYD - SFO was 74 late away at 1359 this afternoon, so arrival has become a predicted 1004, 59 late.

In more on Thursday 23 August 2018, QF463, the evening southbound 1830 hours SYD - MEL took off at 1951. Comfortable A332 VH-EBM - always nice to see a widebody - should arrive at 2104, 59 late.

QF20 departed MNL at 2144, 104 late with SYD arrival on Friday 24 expected at 0725, 75 minutes tardy.

QF24 (BKK - SYD redeye) was not far behind, arriving on Friday at 0740, also 75 late.

I had missed this one, so apologies: QF107 on Thursday 23 August pushed back in SYD at 1501 hours, 171 minutes tardy, arriving PEK at 0051 hours on Friday 24, 156 late. The redeye back down, QF108, departed at 0226 hours, 161 late with projected SYD afternoon arrival at 1535 hours, 135 minutes behind schedule for A332 VH-EBS.

Although QF30, QF36 and QF80 were all early or basically on time arriving in MEL on Friday 24 August, QF29 - a frequently delayed flight, much loike the SYD - BKK QF23 - is expected to depart MEL at 1130 instead of 0935. HKG arrival should be at 1840, 80 minutes tardy.

Notoriously unpunctual QF23 departed SYD 32 late at 1022 so arrival has become 1711, 31 late. A 333 VH-QPB (that arrived in SYD from MNL 119 minutes late on QF20 ex MNL) is the aircraft. As occurs so often, it is following TG476 (the scheduld 1000 hours ex SYD) not in front of it.

UPDATE: The MEL - HKG QF29 is further delayed to an expected 1230 hours departure. This wilol mean a longer wait for one of the southbound flights in HKG tonight.

Thursday 23 August's QF1 arrived SIN at 2339, 84 late and departed (Friday 24) at 0123, 88 late. LHR arrival should be at 0740, 45 late.

Friday's SYD - PVG QF129 was away at 1003, but arrival is delayed until a suggested 1913, 48 late due to unfavourable winds. QF130 will be at least a little delayed ex PVG tonight.

B744-operated QF15 from BNE to LAX pushed back at 1037 hours, 27 late with arrival suggested as 35 late at 0635.

Another B744, the 1135 hours long SYD - SCL one (QF27) should depart at 1210 hours.

The early morning QF574 from PER at 0515 hours (early start for passengers!) to SYD was not in the sky until 0635, about an hour and five minutes late. Although A332 VH-EBP has made up a bit of time, it is expected to still be 49 late upon arrival at 1209 hours.

UPDATE: QF27 departed at 1211 hours, 36 late.

In further on Friday 24 August, QF19 (1210 hours lunchtime SYD up to MNL) departed at 1341, the fifth time of the last six days that it will be at least half an hour late into the Philippine capital. A332 VH-EBL (earlier having arrived from PVG on QF130 at 0821, four minutes early, so no obvious reason for the QF19 tardiness. Expected arrival is 2000 hours, 90 late.

QF107 (A332 VH-EBO), the identically timed departure from SYD but to PEK strangely was only a minute ahead of 'the 19' in pushing back 90 late at 1340 hours. Expected arrival is 2315, an hour late.

The 1245 hours B744 on QF73 (SYD - SFO) departed 35 late and should arrive at 0936 same day, 31 late.

In more on Friday 24 August, QF37 (1615 hours MEL up to SIN) is expected to depart four hours late, arriving at 0205 on Saturday 25 instead of 2225 hours.

Are there always (or often) connecting passengers on QF37 for QF1, the 2355 hours SIN - LHR? In such circumstances, is 'the 1' usually not held and travellers from 'the 37' given an hotel room and rebooked on the following night's QF1? Memory is fickle but I don't often see 'the 37' delayed much, so it may be a fairly unusual occurrence.

Also on 24 August, QF635 (1800 hours BNE down to MEL that was in the sky at 1903 with B738 VH-VYK) is arriving at 2058, 33 minutes tardy.

Northbound QF462 from MEL to SYD has A332 VH-EBS and should be at its destination gate at 2103, 38 minutes late.

The delayed QF37 departed MEL at 2025 on Friday night (250 minutes late) with SIN arrival suggested as 0200 on Saturday 25, 215 late. QF38 from SIN down to MEL is forecast to push back at 0310 hours (perhaps a bit optimistic, but 200 minutes late) with MEL arrival at 1225, 190 late. A332 VH-EBN is the aircraft. It had arrived in MEL on QF449, the 1630 hours SYD - MEL at 1823, 18 minutes late so that tends to indicate another A332 had failed.

The delayed QF19 arrived MNL at 2022 (112 minutes late), so the 2000 hours southbound QF20 back to SYD will depart after 2135.

On Saturday 25 August 2018, the tardy QF20 arrived SYD (ex MNL) at 0751, 101 late.

QF24 from BKK just beat it in, arriving SYD at 0732, 67 late.

The PVG down to SYD QF130 was not quite as bad, arriving at 0915, 50 minutes behind schedule.

QF38 departed SIN at 0314 with suggested MEL arrival 1233, 198 minutes past the allotted.

With the current schedule where it is formed by the arriving QF36 from SIN, QF93 (0900 hours MEL - LAX) is usually good in timekeeping but on Saturday 25 August it commenced pushback at 0945, meaning suggested arrival at 0715 hours, 50 late (same day).

Perenially delayed QF23, the 0950 hours SYD - BKK is predicted to depart at 1030 with arrival a suggested 1705, 25 late.

QF23 on Saturday 25 August did not depart until 1056, so BKK arrival has been further put back to a suggested 1736 hours, 56 late for A332 VH-EBS. This guarantees a tardy departure for the 1810 hours redeye BKK down to SYD, probably at 1850 or later.

Friday's long flight of QF28 departed SCL at 1414 hours, 44 late so Saturday 25's arrival should be at 1735, the same amount behind schedule.

In further on Saturday 25 August, QF3 (1915 hours) SYD - HNL departed 36 minutes late with a 45 minute late arrival at 0915 anticipated. The hurricane has been downgraded to a category two tropical storm.

Although Friday 24's QF12 (LAX - SYD) is on time, QF16 to BNE is not. It pushed back 100 minutes late at 0100 hours on Saturday, so Sunday 26 arrival is expected at 0735, 90 late. In theory this should not delay the 1010 hours QF15 B744 back to LAX.
