Qantas Delays/Cancellations

I wonder how much EK2666 is costing QF?

It would have to be well north of A$600,000 given the presumed need to return empty to DXB. Fuel, cost of the aircraft for at least two days including a profit margin for EK since although the two groups are partners, neither are altruists, crew, catering (bearing in mind catering may have been thrown out when QF2D had to return to DXB), hotel accommodation and meals for stranded passengers.

In 2015, one estimate put the cost of operating an Airbus A380 at an average of US$27,500 per hour. I didn't look at what fuel prices were then (perhaps higher than July 2017.)

Chickenfeed in overall QF revenue terms but the cost of all these longhaul delays over a year, bearing in mind there are many (although not all as serious as this one) must add up to many, many millions of dollars.

Regarding this, what sort of margin does one airline work on when it hires a plane to another, such as this EK to QF example, or the longer duration recently inked agreement between TT and Alliance Airlines (QQ?)

In further on Thursday 27 July, QF777 (1450 hours mid afternoon MEL - PER that was airborne at 1548 with A332 VH-EBK) should arrive at 1741 hours, 41 late.

On Wednesday 26, QF28 departed SCL 66 minutes late at 1436, so Thursday 27 arrival is suggested as 1854, 74 late. This B744 is forming QF25, the 2045 hours from SYD to HND so that should just be able to depart on time.

QF549 (B738 VH-VXS, the 1805 BNE down to SYD that was not in the sky until 1947 hours) should arrive at 2010 hours, half an hour late.

The 1700 hours BNE down to MEL took off at 1803 with B738 VH-VYL, so its forecast 2013 hours arrival will be 48 late.

Wednesday 26 June's QF12 pushed back in JFK at 2037 hours, 147 minutes late with the B744 arriving at LAX at 2307, 127 minutes behind time. The A388 then departed LAX (same flight number) at 0143 hours, a surprising 193 minutes late for a suggested Friday 28 July arrival in SYD of 0915 hours, 185 late.

QF16 was 190 minutes late away from LAX at 0130 hours (beating QF12 in being off blocks) with Friday's BNE arrival predicted to be 0805, 115 minutes tardy. This should not delay the 1020 hours BNE - LAX, QF15.

QF94 was not held and should be slightly early, 10 minutes or so, into MEL on Friday 28 July.

After spending slightly less than 21 hours in SYD, the EK A380 (A6-EOD) that operated the replacement special for QF2D passengers from DXB to SYD took off from SYD at 1632 on Thursday 27 July for the empty flight back to DXB: flight number is apparently EK2667.

A6-EOD (EKq2666/2667 QF charter) was on the ground for 20 hours - prob pilots rest time less than this. Would this be enough for the pilots to rest and operate the return or did they swop with the regular schedule EK flight crew already in SYD

Friday 28 July has QF30, the overnight from HKG down to MEL (A333 VH-QPA) arriving 44 minutes late at 0824 hours.

QF565, first flight of the morning from SYD to PER that is due out at 0605 took off at 0633 with A332 Vh-EBC. Arrival at an estimated 0948 will be 33 minutes tardy.

QF118 (A333 VH-QPB) on the second of the overnights from HKG down to SYD should arrive at 0850, 40 minutes tardy.

The 1550 hours Friday 28 July QF5 from SYD to SIN (usually an A332, not A333) has been cancelled, as has QF6, the scheduled 2355 hours very late night from SIN back down to SYD. Advice from anyone booked as to any rebooking arrangements made by QF for them would be great.

The 1130 hours SYD - ADL (QF1557, B717 VH-YQW) took off at 1216 and should arrive at 1348, 38 minutes behind time.

QF863 (1150 hours OOL down to SYD that was in the sky at 1229, B738 VH-VXT) should arrive at 1401, 41 minutes behind schedule.

In an afternoon delay on Friday 28 July, QF27 (1230 hours longhaul B744 SYD - SCL) is instead expected to commence pushing back at 1340. This will make it at least 55 minutes tardy arriving in Chile.

A stablemate B744 on QF73 (1300 hours SYD - SFO) is expected to depart 45 late but only be 25 minutes behind time arriving in SFO.

For the first time in many days, QF12 from LAX is predicted to be a little early into LAX (Thursday 27 July.) Most days lately it has been between 40 and 100 minutes late, blowing out to 180 or so minutes tardy in the most severe cases of unpunctuality.

QF7, the 1230 hours long haul from SYD to DFW departed at 1319 this afternoon. Arrival is forecast for 1341, 41 late.

Despite Thursday 27 July's QF12 from JFK across to LAX creditably arriving five minute early at 2055, the onwards QF12 did not depart until 2350 hours, 80 minutes late so its Saturday 29 July arrival is estimated at 0745, 85 minutes behind the timetable.

QF743 (Friday 28 July 1820 hours SYD across to ADL that was in the sky at 1905 with B738 VH-VZE) should arrive at 2036, 36 minutes tardy.

The 1805 hours from BNE south to SYD that was airborne at 1854 (VH-VXI on QF549) is arriving at 2017, 37 minutes late.

Earlier on 28 July, QF27 (B744) departed SYD at 1357, 87 minutes tardy with same day arrival estimated in SCL at 1205, 55 late.

On Friday 28 July, QF24 from BKK down to SYD departed 42 minutes behind schedule at 1852; Saturday 29 arrival is predicted as 0701 hours, 31 minutes late.

Due to the projected late arrival of QF27, the returning SCL - SYD QF28 is forecast (on Friday 28) to depart at 1400, half an hour behind with Saturday 29 late afternoon arrival likely 25 minutes late at 1805.

Thursday 27 July's A388 VH-OQB on QF94 departed LAX at 2305, 55 minutes late but perhaps due to windy conditions in MEL on Saturday 29 diverted to SYD, where its stop was from 0703 to 0847. MEL arrival is expected at 1029 hours, 214 minutes late. This will delay the departure of QF93 from MEL from its normal 0915 hours until about 1215 hours, or later.

QF1501 (0815 hours MEL - HBA, B717 VH-YQV) took off at 0857 so arrival is predicted at 1000, an even half an hour late.

The extremely long flight from SYD to DFW, QF7, is again delayed with Saturday 29 departure estimated to be three hours behind schedule at 1530, meaning a 1550 hours arrival (170 late.)

Again, QF23 has been delayed, with Saturday 29 departure at 1049 hours, 59 minutes late and arrival forecast for 1713, 33 late.

QF127 was earlier this morning displaying as 20 minutes late but it did not commence pushing back until 1149, 109 late, with suggested arrival of this SYD - HKG flight at 1821 hours, 61 minutes tardy.

QF93 (see above: delayed due to QF94 diverting via SYD) is more tardy than expected with pushback not having commenced by 1305. One assumes that passengers who normally would travel on QF11 across from LAX to JFK, the B744 ex QF15, will instead be booked on connecting AA flights with available seats.

With severe gusts at MEL, there are many delays on Saturday 29 July.

Wind gusts at MEL were as high as 104kmh at 1100 but have since slightly moderated to 85 - 93kmh. Wind is from the north.

One example is QF1503 (B717 VH-NXJ), the scheduled 1030 hours MEL - HBA that had not taken off by 1320 this afternoon.

Saturday 29 July's QF93 from MEL to LAX was originally listed as departing at 1210 (due to the diversion of QF94 via SYD), then 1300: finally it departed at 1413 hours this afternoon. Arrival is predicted (same day) for 1115, 280 minutes tardy.

Longhaul QF2 is often on time but Saturday 29's pushed back in DXB at 1120, 125 late; Sunday 30 arrival should be at 0715 hours, also 125 late.

QF35, the first of the weekend's MEL - SIN flights unusually departed 133 minutes late at 1358 on 29 July. Its arrival in the Lion City should be at approximately 1935 hours, 100 late.

Friday 28's QF28 from SCL pushed back at 1444, 74 minutes late. Saturday 29 July arrival is predicted as 1916 hours, 96 minutes late. QF maintains that QF25 will still push back at its scheduled 2045 hours tonight, but an hour and 29 minutes would be an extremely quick turnaround for a B744 if the arrival in from SCL remains at 1916 hours.

QF12 ex LAX is estimated to arrive SYD on Sunday 30 July at 0658, 38 minutes late.

That should be QF35. QF has quite long turn arounds in SIN, so return flights are rarely affected. QF52 SIN-BNE is a little delayed though, I think it's a separate issue since there is enough time for all SIN planes to turn around on time today.

Awesom Andy, thanks: that has been corrected.

QF16 on Friday 27 July was meant to depart LAX at 2320 hours but this occurred on Saturday 28 at 0108; Sunday 30 arrival's estimate is 85 minutes late at 0735. This should be in sufficient time to form a punctual QF15, the 1020 hours BNE - LAX.

Just looked at flight aware for QF 93 - it has departed on-time once in past 10 days or so and often more than 90 mins late - WTF
My friend is on QF 93 this morning - hope he gets away on time??????

Duffa, your friend may have won the lottery, as QF94 on Sunday 30 July arrived ex LAX in MEL at 0717 hours, 22 minutes late, so, touch wood, QF93 should depart on time at 0915.

Saturday 29's QF128 from HKG to SYD, the 2015 hours departed 99 minutes late at 2154 so arrival on Sunday 30 is predicted as 0852, 102 minutes tardy. B744 VH-OJU is the aircraft.

The Sunday 30 arrival of QF2 ex LHR and DXB into SYD was at 0705, 115 minutes late.

QF98, the overnight from HKG to BNE should arrive on Sunday morning at 0831, 106 minutes behind schedule.

On Sunday 30 July, QF29 (1020 hours MEL - HKG) is delayed in its departure until 1500 hours mid afternoon, arriving at 2230 hours, a forecast 270 minutes late. It does not seem that this is related to Typhoon Nesat or Tropical Storm Haitang that have been or will be affecting Taiwan and mainland China, as the storm is apparently to make landfall in mainland China between Fuzhou and Quanzhou, not particularly close to HKG or its flight paths from Oz if I recall.

QF97 (1050 hours BNE - HKG) is predicted to depart at 1230 early this afternoon.

The 1055 hours BNE - NRT (QF61) is normally very punctual (like all the JL, NH and QF Japanese flights) but on Sunday 30 is expected to depart at 1200 'high noon' for a 55 minute late suggested 2005 hours arrival.

QF29 is delayed awaiting inbound VH-OEB from BNE as QF6002. They did an aircraft swap with VH-OJS positioning from SYD-BNE to replace OEB on QF15.

QF29 is delayed awaiting inbound VH-OEB from BNE as QF6002...

Thanks Flyerqf. B744 VH-OEB on QF6002 only took off from BNE at 1133 so if it arrives in MEL at 1345 or so, it is hard to see QF29 pushing back at 1500. This may be at least 1520 hours.

QF81 (1025 hours SYD - SIN) departed half an hour late with arrival at 1720 estimated to be identically late.

B738 VH-XZB on QF581 (1010 hours SYD - PER) was in the sky at 1107. so arrival at the Perth airport gate becomes a likely 1401, 46 minutes tardy.

QF1556 (B717 VH-YQT, the 1030 hours ADL across to SYD that was airborne at 1156) should arrive at 1349 this afternoon, 54 late.

Longhaul QF63 was 46 minutes tardy in pushing back in SYD at 1136. It is predicted to arrive in JNB at 1743, 43 late.

With the delayed QF29 not due into HKG until at least 22.25, QF128 back to SYD using the same aircraft (VH-OEB) will be delayed tonight until at least 00:10 (Mon) although QF hasn't updated this flight status.

With QF's website, it appears that it is rarely updated until the flight that is forming a departure has pointed skywards and commenced operating at cruising level.

2225 hours is a landing time, not arrival at gate, for which I allow a nominal five minutes extra (although it often takes longer.)
