Qantas Delays/Cancellations

I was rebooked too with serfty who I saw in the QF SIN lounge. But I'm not in a hurry this time and took the hotel with meals and transport option.

Perhaps I will regret it but at the moment I'm in a 4 star hotel in Singapore.

On Monday 13 February, QF2 from DXB and LHR (A388 VH-OQJ) is arriving SYD about 35 minutes late at 0705.

The extensively delayed Sunday 12 February QF15 from BNE departed at 0332 on Monday 13 with LAX arrival predicted for 2245 hours same day instead of the scheduled 0600. QF16 ex LAX at 2320 on Monday evening must be delayed, but this is yet to publicly show on the QF websiote.

QF30 delayed over 12 hours from SIN. ... I'm rebooked on QF8404 (EK404). Ill pilot apparently. ..

serfty, do you mean 'QF38?' QF30 is the HKG - MEL; QF38 was meant to depart as the second SIN - MEL at 2340 hours on Sunday 12 February but will now allegedly push back at 1200 ('high noon') on Monday 13 for an expected 2215 hours arrival in MEL.

QF36 from SIN to MEL (A332 VH-EBQ) is also delayed, with departure having been at 2250 on Sunday, 185 minutes late for a forecast Monday 13 0932 hours arrival, 197 minutes behind schedule. It had been predicted to arrive MEL at 0917 but there is congestion in the air for incoming flights.

Saturday 11 February saw QF10 depart LHR 69 minutes behind schedule at 1304: this is relatively unusual.

The DXB stop was from 0039 (99 late) to 0226 (81 late) on Sunday 12 with MEL arrival suggested tonight as 2222 hours, 57 minutes late.

Once again, QF9 (the 2325 hours MEL - DXB - LHR) will be late away, probably by at least 45 minutes.

JQ4 from HNL to SYD is estimated to depart 75 minutes late on Sunday 12 February (die to the late QF3) with Monday 13 SYD arrival expected an hour late at 1830.

The reason for the delay was unusual too. The captain was unable to undo his seatbelt so had to get engineering on board. This was made worse by the need to have snow removed for the aircraft, which took longer than expected. Had a family member on the flight.

On Monday 13 February, QF9 departed MEL 72 minutes late at 0037, with DXB arrival suggested as 75 minutes tardy at 0745. However DXB departure is predicted to only be 45 minutes late at 0915 with an on time 1240 hours LHR at gate time. If the DXB stop was reduced even more, and a good run was enjoyed between DXB and LHR, this flight could even arrive a little early at its terminus, based on previously observed sector times.

QF406, the 0645 hours MEL - SYD on 13 February has been cancelled. VA has two MEL - SYD cancellations this morning. While there could be other reasons such as defective aircraft or staff unavailability, cancelling Monday morning flights on Australia's busiest routes may be another indicator that bookings are relatively soft.

The early morning 0710 hours MEL - PER QF775 did not take off until 0926 on 13 February.

QF2130 (1125 hours MEL up to CBR) should instead depart at about 1210 this afternoon.

The mid morning 0925 hours MEL - AKL, QF153, has been delayed in its departure under around 1450 this afternoon.

Continuing with Monday 13 February, A332 VH-EBD on the 1000 PER - MEL QF772 took off at 1107, so is about to arrive at roughly 1719, 44 minutes late. This will delay the return flight, QF481, the 1735 to about 1810 in its departure.

B738 VH-VYF on QF703 (1200 'high noon' from CNS down to MEL that was airborne at 1312) is arriving at approximately 1713 hours, 53 late. QF458 is its next flight, the scheduled 1800 hours to SYD so bearing in mind this is a B738 and not an A332, it shouild be able to depart on time.

The delayed QF9 stopped at DXB from 0742 to 1016 on Monday 13 February, so LHR arrival is suggested as 45 minutes late at 1325 hours.

This shows how crucial it is to bring down the time spent on the ground at DXB, which on many occasions QF1/2/9 or 10 manage to do.

The extremely late QF15 ex BNE arrived in LAX at 2258 on Sunday 12 February instead of the normal 0600, departing as QF15 at 0109 on Monday 13 instead of 2320 hours on Sunday late evening.

BNE arrival is suggested as 0820 in lieu of 0705 on Tuesday 14 February. This should be in plenty of time to form a punctual QF15 from BNE back to LAX.

QF3 on Monday 13 departed SYD 69 minutes late at 2039 with HNL arrival expected at 0955 same day, 90 minutes late. This will delay QF4, the 1000 scheduled departure from the USA state but it has yet to be updated on QF's flight status page.

The 1130 hours QF11 on Wednesday 15 February 2017 departed SYD only five minutes late, but arrival in LAX is suggested as half an hour behind at 0645.

Down in 'Mexico', QF93 was off blocks 57 minutes tardy at 1212; same day arrival, also in LAX is predicted to be 75 minutes late at 0750.

On Thursday 16 February, the relatively recent addition to QFi's offerings ex MEL, QF79 to NRT departed 28 late at 0943 with arrival suggested as half an hour behind at 1800 tonight.

QF420, the 0930 hours MEL - SYD (A333 VH - QPD - these are infrequently used on this short domestic route) took off at 1020 and should arrive at 1128, 33 late.

B738 VH-XZB on QF434 (1300 MEL - SYD that was in the sky at 1352) should arrive at about 1457, 32 minutes behind schedule.

We do not normally record early running but if I may crave viewers' indulgence, the Wednesday 15 February QF12 departed LAX 28 minutes late at 2258 and is estimated on Friday 17 to arrive at its allocated gate in SYD 48 minutes early at around 0742 hours.

That's a net gain (gate-to-gate, not takeoff to landing) of approximately 76 minutes westbound. Doubtless it will not be a record, but it's impressive nonetheless and from observation not often matched. I cannot recall a recent example that has bettered this, although like all of us it is not possible to monitor every flight.

On Friday 17 February, QF93 (A388 VH-OQB) took off at 1211, 56 minutes after its timetabled pushback from MEL for LAX where arrival at 0710 should be 35 minutes tardy.

B744 VH-OEH on the 1135 SYD longhaul to JNB (QF63) did not become airborne until 1310. Arrival will be at least 32 minutes late at 1707. FR24 suggests an 1800 touchdown but it often exaggerates delays.

QF446 (1600 hours MEL - SYD) has been cancelled.

With what looks to be a very severe storm approaching SYD as at 1450 on Friday 17 February, mid to late afternoon delays are likely.

QF2210 (1350 hours ABX - SYD) took off at 1442 on 17 February. Arrival of Q300 VH-SBT should be at 1559, 44 minutes late, although the severe storm about to hit SYD and environs at 1520 or so may mean delays.

UPDATE: With the storm in and around SYD, at 1540 QF761 (1500 hours SYD across to ADL, B738 VH-VYC) appeared to be stationary, second in the queue on runway 16R, while QF443 was north of it (and hence further back) with this 1500 hours down to MEL being formed by A332 VH-EBE.

B738 VH-XZM was even further back on the 1500 hours SYD - BNE, QF532.

QF531, the 1235 BNE - SYD (B738 VH-XZC) was undertaking some quite nicely patterned circuits to the southeast of SYD with its scheduled 1510 arrival having long gone at 1544.

There were at least six aircraft in holds near Barrington Tops National Park to Sydney's north as at 1546 with one example being QF2023, the 1410 hours from ARM down to SYD that took off at 1504 and which was due in SYD at 1530.

One of our kind pilots has probably told us before but for typical domestic flights from say BNE or MEL to SYD would B738s and A320s tend to have sufficient extra fuel when storms were predicted for say a 45 minute hold, and then after that have to look for an 'alternate' airfield?

I'm located about 10km west of the airport. Plenty of lightning and rain is getting very heavy as of now. Anyone who is looking to depart SYD after 4pm, if your flight hasn't started boarding, you might want to keep your seat in the lounge - it will become a strongly sought after asset very shortly.

South of SYD over Yass as at 1555 hours is also busy with numerous aircraft in holding patterns such as QF440 that was very punctual taking off from MEL at 1441 against its pushback time of 1430; aircraft B738 VH-VZY has however already done three nice looking racecourse type circuits so it is unlikely to arrive at what FR24 suggests will be 1629 hours. Its timetabled arrival is 1555.

These delays inevitably increase: airports run out of available gates; gates may change at short notice confusing the elderly or less experienced travellers; pilots or flight attendants may start to exceed permitted hours and to cap it all off, there is at least a slight possibility that if storms are very severe, aircraft may be damaged or tarmacs flooded.

QF438, the 1400 hours MEL - SYD (B738 VH-VZU) looks to have made it northwards as far as Stanwell Park (or 'Tops') but has then after some holds turned southwest, and looks suspiciously like it is diverting to CBR, with VA1280 (VH-YVC, another B738) from HTI to SYD ahead of it in also changing destination for the national capital.

Thank you N860CR. Great as always to have on-the-spot reporters.

QF531, the 1235 BNE - SYD that took off at 1300 hours on Friday 17 February also looks to be diverting to CBR with B738 VH-VZC likely to touch down at around 1615 hours in CBR, 65 minutes after it was due in SYD. We can probably safely suggest that this aircraft won't arrive in SYD until after 1800 tonight, but perhaps much later.

Freighter QF7550 (B744 N493MC, from HNL to SYD) may also be diverting to CBR.

For anyone stuck in CBR, NSWTrainLink has a 1725 hours train to Sydney Central ex the Canberra railway station in Kingston: if one's destination is the southern suburbs in Sydney, this may be a reasonable alternative for once.

QF1560 (1345 hours ADL - SYD that took off punctually at 1355, B717 VH-NXI) is also diverting to CBR with touchdown at around 1622 in CBR compared with its mandated SYD arrival of 1610 hours.

Are you or anyone else still inCanberra and have club access? We might be here a while! Waiting for Sydney flight near Gate 12 in striped dress.

We won't be able to get off the plane. Currently sitting over on the military apron. Hopefully will be headed black to Sydney shortly.
