Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Monday 17 October, the overnight delayed QF25 from SYD to HND arrived at 2211, departing on Tuesday 18 at 0010, two hours and 10 minutes late. Arrival back in SYD is expected to be at 1110 rather than the timetabled 0930 hours.

It looks like this aircraft (B744 VH-OEF) is then forming the 1230 hours from SYD to SCL, QF27, judging by the allocated gate number. QF suggests that this may get away at 1250 which would be pretty tight: 1310 might be more realistic.

One doubts that it is ideal for this aircraft to have minimum turnarounds on a SYD - HND - SYD - SCL - SYD excursion. It gives little or no opportunity for maintenance of even small problems.
 
Haneda is often for Tokyo bound travellers (I am there for a week) noting Haneda is easy immigration, newish, lot closer to Tokyo, so cheaper faster land transit.
Most people flying to HND are going to Tokyo or connecting to domestic JL flights. A small number are connecting to NRT.

Plane was VH-OEF as got a good look when landed in Haneda and descended stairs and walked near plane going to bus as no aerobridge.

I wonder if the problem has been OEF all along. It arrived from JNB on 15Oct in the afternoon. I had thought it was OEG that was to perform QF25.
So perhaps the airline had 2 747 (M1 had suspected there was another missing 747) out of action on 16th October apart from the 747 currently C,D checks in HKG.

By the way: OEG is back in action operating Tuesdays 747 service as QF11. Taxiing to the runway for an onschedule departure.


Im sure in the grand scheme of things very esoteric for most thread lurkers.
 
On Tuesday 18 October, QF93, the 1015 hours A388 from MEL to LAX did not depart until 1237. Arrival is forecast to be 0845 instead of 0635 hours, same day.

The 1120 SYD - SIN, QF81 (A333 VH-QPB) took off at 1211. It should arrive at about 1720, 35 minutes late.

Further south, QF35, the 1245 hours MEL- SIN is predicted to instead be off its blocks at 1330.

QF27 from SYD for the long ocean haul to SCL has been further delayed with the revised departure time now 1305. Timetable says '1230'.

While the MEL-bound Monday 17 October QF94 from LAX only departed 14 minutes late at 2229, it is not forecast to arrive until 35 minutes behind at 0835 on Wednesday 19 October.

This will increase the chance of QF93, the Wednesday 19 1015 hours MEL - LAX departing late as an hour 40, while sometimes achievable, is a tight turnaround for an A388.
 
QF737, the appropriately numbered 1800 hours CBR to ADL operated by B737-800 VH-VYA did not become airborne until 1856 hours on Tuesday 18 October. Arrival in the leading wine state should be at 2006, 46 minutes tardy.
 
The Wednesday 19 October 2016 QF765 (the 1640 hours from SYD across to ADL, B738 VH-VXH) was not airborne until 1759 late this afternoon. It should arrive at around 1928, 68 minutes late.
 
On Thursday 20 October 2016, QF409, the 0700 SYD - MEL (A332 VH-EBQ) did not take off until 0736, and so will not arrive until a suggested 0905, half an hour late.

The medium distance QF129 (1035 from SYD to PVG) departed at 1046 but is not forecast to arrive until 1900 this evening, half an hour behind time. VH-QPE is the A333.

QF143 (B738 ZK-ZQB), the 0955 from SYD across to AKL did not depart until 1040; arrival is suggested as 45 minutes late at 1545 this afternoon.

M1 you probably already know this:

QF95/96 to be cancelled from 30 January. Seasonal services on this route will run 3x week in March/April and June/July. This will allow a daily MEL-HKG B747 service from 30 January 2017.
A high season A330 PER-SIN will replace the usual 737 during Dec-Jan
 
On Friday 21 October, the 0845 hours from CBR down to MEL, QF1529 took off at 0945 with arrival suggested as 1043, 53 minutes tardy. B717 VH-YQY, unfortunately registered for QF if one says 'Y' "Q', 'Y?' is the operating aircraft.

QF96 from LAX on Wednesday 19 October departed two minutes late at 2337 but this morning, Friday 21 October diverted to SYD where it stopped from 0834 to 0929. Arrival of B744 VH-OEJ in MEL should be at about 1108 instead of 0930.

QF94 from LAX arrived at 0808 this morning (Friday 21) but QF93 from MEL has inexplicably been delayed in its departure from 1015 to a forecast 1200, meaning likely LAX arrival at 0750 hours rather than 0635.

QF127 and QF83, the 1105 and 1115 from SYD to HKG have been cancelled, reflecting the approaching typhoon Haima that earlier struck northern Luzon in Philippines leaving at least eight dead.

QF29 has also been cancelled (MEL - HKG) but QF97 from BNE, the 1050 AEST to HKG is still showing as operating. The latter may be simply that QF has not updated its website as it would be illogical if one of the eastern seaboard flights to HKG was running yet the other three were cancelled due to the threat of extremely high winds and all the other discomfort and danger (including, sadly, loss of life and property) that cyclones, hurricanes or typhoons bring.

Additional to Melburnian1's observations of Typhoon Haima, it appears to be heading towards HKG

Qantas has announced the cancellation of all flights between Australia and Hong Kong on Oct 21.

A "signal 8" warning has been announced. Signal 8 refers to a storm warning where sustained winds are Beaufort 8-11 (63-117 kmh)

Further there is another Typhoon Sarika which hit Luzon and then China landfall at Hainan island near the Vietnam border

QF2283, the 1140 MEL - LST has been delayed in its departure until at least 1220 on Friday 21 October.

What is normally the 1100 SYD - MEL, QF427 but today is the scheduled 1101 (presumably an ATC-mandated pushback time to try to maximise fuel efficiency and improve sequencing of aircraft) operated by A332 VH-EBG took off at 1229 (rendering ATC's sterling efforts pointless). It should arrive in the southern capital at about 1353, 78 minutes late.

Due to this late running QF436, the 1330 MEL - SYD is forecast to depart at around 1440.

Sometimes the MEL - SYD - MEL or vice versa turnarounds can be an hour and 25 minutes (in MEL) with say a 1235 hours arrival forming the 1400 northbound but today being Friday, passenger loads may be a bit heavier so at least for this widebody rotation a 55 minute turnaround had obviously been programmed in - perfectly adequate when things go well but problematical if a flight is delayed as QF427 has been.

QF1503, the 1230 MEL - HBA has been altered to depart at around 1345, being formed by QF1504 that arrived at around 1315, on time, so something must have gone awry with the B717s.

UPDATE: QF93, the 1015 MEL - LAX (A388 VH-OQJ) did not in the end depart until 1246, so arrival has been further pushed back to an estimated same day 0840 hours, 125 minutes behind time.

Just saw QF93 depart from MEL in a Southerly direction and then bank east towards the CBD. Don't usually see the big bird depart in that direction, which I suspect is because of the weather.

Also on Friday 21 October, QF1535 (1215 CBR - MEL, B717 VH-YQY) took off at 1342. Arrival is predicted to be 1445, 80 minutes behind time. This plane has therefore lost time since three or so hours ago when above it was shown as running about 53 minutes late. The inclement weather in MEL may be at least a slight further hindrance to timekeeping.

QF473 (1415 hours SYD to MEL, widebody A332 VH-EBP) is still only taxiing at 1537 so instead of arriving at 1550 will probably do so after 1650 given that it has to take off to the north.

In further on Friday 21 October, QF1505, the 1445 hours MEL - HBA on a route infamous for delayed QF flights took off at 1611. Arrival of B717 VH-YQX should be at approximately 1705, 65 minutes tardy. It is behind QF1507, the 1515 MEL - HBA (B717 VH-YQY) that took off at 1604; likely arrival is 2702, 31 minutes late.

News Corporation's 'Escape' travel section ran an incomplete online one page article this week about Hobart being Australia's worst major airport for punctual flights. What it did not mention is that the QF B717s' poor performance (routes to MEL and lesser SYD frequencies) has been the standout reason, although it varies month to month. MEL - HBA is a route on which VA's punctuality performance is typically way ahead of QF's.

QF624, the 1510 hours from MEL to BNE (B738 VH-VXI) took off at 1602 hours; arrival should be approximately at 1650 which would be half an hour late.

B738 VH-VXQ on the 1530 hours from SYD to MEL (QF445) is about half an hour late and should arrive at approximately 1735.

The Thursday 20 October long distance QF12 departed LAX at 2258, 28 late. On Saturday 22 it is estimated to arrive in SYD half an hour late at 0800.

QF94 left shortly after, 19 minutes behind at 2234 but is not arriving in MEL on Saturday 22 until a suggested 0835, 35 minutes tardy. This will at least slightly delay the 1015 hours Saturday 22 QF93 from MEL to LAX as while a turnaround of an hour 38 has been observed occasionally, a more usual one is an hour 50 to two hours - if, as one esteemed contributor thoughtfully reminds us, everything goes well.

Normally, if you take off to the south, and your route goes over Sydney or Brisbane, you'll initially turn to the west. If you're heading out via Sale (or area), you'll turn to the east. Looking at FR24, he's gone via Sydney, but turned east...so either ATC have come up with a decent route that doesn't add miles (be nice), or there was weather to the west that he wanted to avoid.
 
B717 VH-YQX above was about 65 minutes late but on QF1506, the 21 October 1550 HBA - MEL this has worsened with takeoff at 1748 and likely arrival forecast for 1913, 128 minutes late.

QF1508 (1710 hours same route, B717 VH-YQY) took off at 1751 and should be at the MEL terminal gate at roughly 1917, 52 minutes late.

The second of the day MEL - SIN, QF37, the 1640 hours (A333 VH-QPA) took off at 1729. Arrival is expected 39 minutes late at 2229 late tonight SIN time.

QF463, the 1830 hours southbound SYD - MEL was in the sky at 1923. Arrival of B738 VH-XZK should be at around 2055 hours, 50 minutes behind schedule.
