Qantas Delays/Cancellations

You need the second half of the ATIS..

INFO W. TMP: 18. VIS: GREATER THAN 10 KM. WND: 330/15. MAXIMUM CROSSWIND 1 8 KTS RWY 2 7. QNH: 1004

Curious how the maximum crosswind of 18 knots, is greater than the wind value of 15 knots!

Apologies as this is not a delay, but QF10 is running about 20 minutes early and travelling at 1169 kilometres an hour (632 knots) - fast. QF758 behind it is motoring along at 1214kmh (655 knots).

Westbound across the Great Australian Bight, QF773, the 1830 hours MEL - PER (A332 VH-EBB) that was airborne at 1927 is down to 628kmh (339 knots). It should arrive about 49 late at 2134 WST.

The 10 is actually flying quite slowly at .78 mach, so obviously ATC are slowing the inbound traffic.

Quite common for these flights with the tailwinds. So its ground speed. The aircraft would be actually going quite slow in the air, and probably cant go any slower for the altitude its flying at.??

Cancellations in the evening of Sunday 9 October 2016 include QF632, the 1810 hours MEL to BNE; QF460 and QF462 (1830 and 1900 MEL - SYD); QF2289 (1910 hours MEL - LST) and QF1609 (the 1930 MEL - HBA).

Some JQ flights have also been cancelled, including (originally) the last of the evening from MEL to HBA but that flight (JQ713) has changed (again) to show a projected 100 minute late, 2115 hours, departure.

While those of us who reside in MEL could get home if an airline instead offers a flight on Monday 10 October, the out-of-towners may in a few cases have to camp at the airport overnight if not provided with accommodation.

We'd like to hear about individual travellers' tales as to what you were, or were not, given or offered.

First I heard about my flight was an SMS while waiting to clear security at Tullamarine, telling me my flight was cancelled. SMS included a phone number to call, which I did and left a note for a callback. Callback came about half an hour later, and I was told that the next available flight was 0700 the next day. Got it booked. As the call was about to wrap up, I asked what I was supposed to do for the night, given that I live 200kms away and my car was in a longterm park until Wednesday. I was then told I could book a room up to $250 somewhere nearby, then hit up the Qantas feedback form and get it refunded.

As you can imagine, every hotel near the airport is at capacity. I'm currently on a mate's couch in Craigieburn, which seemed the most reliable option.

Is your mate on Airbnb?.

QF548 arrived BNE ~9:40pm or ~130 minutes late. Flight time was only ~57 minutes and delayed ~5 minutes by BNE air traffic control. No catering loaded in SYD to make up time as pilots were running out of hours and they rushed out of SYD.

QF93 delayed an hour tomorrow, got an SMS earlier. Hope it's only one hour!

That is because the incoming aircraft operating QF94 is delayed and estimated arrival is 0915. It is currently enroute tracking south of the Hawaiian islands.

Previous Insights provided by Melburnian1 suggests that it takes at least 2.75 hours to turn around an A380. I think departure will be around noon or a tad later assuming arrival of QF94 as currently estimated and nothing else going wrong. 1215 will be the earliest.

The weather today affecting MEL will be less severe tomorrow.

The 1245 hours Sunday 9 October QF35 from MEL to SIN (A333 VH-QPC) has just taken off badly late at 1646.

Arrival is predicted as 2216 which would be 261 minutes late, so one of the departures ex SIN back to east coast Oz will be late this evening..

Actually Changi website showing three of the five QF departures ex SIN back to east coast Oz late this evening. QF 36 to MEL (19:55) delayed to 22:30, QF 38 to MEL (23:35) delayed to 00:05 and QF 6 to SYD (23:55) delayed to 02:40. JQ 8 to MEL also delayed by at least one hour. The QF6 delay is probably good news for any QP/SG/WP members who happen to be on one of the middle of the night 3K departure to MNL/KIX or PER, as the QF lounge will no doubt be open until at least 02:10.

Not a good start for the first of the day, QF wise, from MEL to SYD with QF400, the 0600 hours departure not becoming airborne until 0710. A332 VH-EBD is expected to arrive at 0820, 55 minutes behind time.

On Monday 10 October, QF36 (A333 VH-QPC, which was badly late out of MEL yesterday) is expected to arrive in MEL at 0849, 149 minutes behind the timetabled 0620 on blocks time.

QF38 (A332 VH-EBS) is however only about 11 minutes late - it should arrive at 1011.

A388, VH-OQI is on transfer ('ferry') flight from MNL to SYD, having departed at 0134 on 10 October. There was also a QF6009 northbound SYD - MNL transfer scheduled on Sunday 9 October.

Probably as a result of the immense difficulties weather-wise on Sunday 9 October, QF1501, the 0815 MEL - HBA B717, has been cancelled on Monday 10 October, but QF1590 appears to be operating in lieu with an identical departure time.

The 0845 hours MEL - SYD, QF488, has suffered the same fate as has QF1528, the off peak 1030 hours from MEL up to CBR.

QF405 (the 0630 hours from SYD down to MEL, A332 VH-EBB) did not take off until 0751; arrival should be at about 0907 hours, 62 minutes behind time. This is expected to delay the 0900 hours MEL - SYD (QF418) until about 0950 in its departure.

The 0805 hours MEL - DRW, QF838, is not expected to depart until about 0850.

Yesterdays weather appears to have subsided in MEL:

INFO R. RWY 27 & 34 FOR ARR. RWY 27 FOR DEP. LAHSO IN PROGRESS. SIGWX: SIGMETS VICTOR 0 6 & PAPA 0 5 VALID. TMP: 12. WND: 320/10.
INFO R. VIS: GREATER THAN 10 KM. CLD: FEW030. QNH: 1008.

Aircraft arriving on R34 required to land and hold short of intersecting runway 27??. I think this is a normal airport operation at busy times.

The point to take on board is that windshear is dangerous at both ends of the flight!

JB is Vr increased when operating in this type of weather to provide some sort of buffer against change of widespeed/direction during the takeoff roll?

I was on this flight. After waiting about 10 minutes past start of boarding time at the gate, we were told last night's tech crew ran out of hours and they needed to get a new crew in. We left about an hour late.

In saying this I don't know the overall availability of crews including standbys, which the bad weather yesterday may have 'disrupted', but at least on the surface this strikes me as poor planning if a crew runs out of hours so quickly.
