Husband is flying back from five months overseas tomorrow. I hope the plane lands safely (here, not in some other airport, haha).

On Sunday 9 October 2016, QF130, the redeye from PVG is estimated to arrive in SYD at 1002, 32 minutes late with A333 VH-QPB.

With the gusty, as predicted winds in MEL on Sunday 9 October, it looks like the 1000 SYD - MEL, QF423 (A332 VH-EBM) that took off at 1032 is in a relatively unusual holding pattern close to MEL airport, a couple of kilometres east of Melbourne's CBD. It is unlikely to be at the gate before 1220 which would at a minimum be 45 minutes late.

The preceding flight VA830 that is also the (competing) 1000 SYD - MEL appeared to have an initial missed approach, and has been retimed to allegedly be arriving at the gate at around 1221.

The 1130 hours from MEL up to SYD, QF428 (A332 VH-EBP) is still at the former as at 1205.

QF678 (the 0945 hours from ADL across to MEL) is similarly delayed and in a holding pattern: B738 VH-VXH is the plane. It was due at MEL at 1135 so will also be at least 45 minutes behind time should it be able to land.

It will be interesting to see if aircraft have to divert or whether MEL airport is closed for a while.

UPDATE: At around 1218, the gusts must have abated, as QF423 landed at about 1221. Others are following.

QF614 (1110 hours MEL - BNE, B738 VH-VYA) took off at 1218 with 'Sunshine State' capital arrival suggested as 1320, an even hour delayed.

So even though the much larger number of nonstop flights to smaller destinations compared to 20 years ago helps to reduce the number of pesky connecting passengers, these MEL wind-related delays will to a fair extent ripple through the national network of the two major air carriers.

FURTHER UPDATE: As at 1237, the BOM stated that the winds at MEL were from the north at 80kmh, gusting to 89kmh. The ground temperature was 15.5 degrees Celsius but the 'apparent temperature" (which if I recall has been the subject of criticism as a measure) was minus 0.2 - a huge difference due to wind chill I assume.

The 1120 medium haul from MEL to HKG, QF29, was airborne at 1253 so should be more than an hour late arriving in the SAR. B744 VH-OEJ has the honours.

The 1200 SYD to MEL, QF431 (B738 VH-VXT) was in the sky at 1246 and should arrive at the gate at around 1412 hours, 37 minutes late.

QF682 (the 1150 from ADL across to MEL that took off at 1229, B738 VH-XZM) looks to have had a missed approach or two at MEL at about 1410 and is now above Gisborne. It was due into MEL at 1340 so will be at least 45 minutes late.

Hubby's flight, QF613, from BNE such in at 1237, I think, about 12 mins late, but we've been stuck at the airport ever since because they are not unloading the planes due to the high winds. What is perplexing thigh is that some flights have taken off in the last half hour. And it seems that more planes did land in the time we've been waiting.

They've just called the all clear here though and hopefully we'll get his bags soon.

suze2000, this may be because in such winds objects could go flying at MEL - dangerous for baggage handlers?

QF704, the 1220 MEL up to CNS was not airborne until a very late 1513 hours and hence will not arrive until the 1729 mark or so, in lieu of the timetabled 1445 mid afternoon at gate time. VH-XZA (B738) has the honour.

QF1503, the early afternoon 1230 hours from MEL down to HBA has yet to take off as at 1524 so expect some hugely delayed flights on this 'yo yo' this afternoon and evening. The aircraft is B717 VH-YQT.

Yeah I understand why they can't load/unload. What's frustrating now is they seem to be unloading planes in random order. So those of us who've been here the longest are not getting to leave first!

The Sunday 9 October 2016 QF616 (1210 hours MEL - BNE, B738 VH-VZE) has yet to take off as at 1540, so it is badly late.

As suze2000 suggests, there is no particular pattern to the delays afflicting flights in and out of MEL - some departures are not overly late, others have been badly affected.

QF687, the 1240 hours MEL - ADL took off at 1550; arrival of B738 VH-VZU should be at approximately 1628, 178 minutes late.

QF450 Melbourne to Sydney @ 1630 got cancelled. Currently waiting on a callback from Qantas. Oh well, to the bar to watch Bathurst.

Widebody VH-EBD (A332) on the 1305 hours QF769 MEL to PER on Sunday 9 October took off at 1611; arrival should be at around 153 instead of 1420 hours.

The 1400 hours MEL - SYD, QF438 (B738 VH-VXK) was airborne at 1611 meaning likely arrival at 1725 late this afternoon, two hours behind time.

g-lock, while I'm not suggesting every seat would be sold, one would think most Sunday afternoons/early evenings would be busy, so let's hope you don't have to wait too long to be given a seat on another flight. Please let us know what flight you are placed on and what time that leaves.

As today is the last day of NSW school holidays, I would expect (=speculate) that the aircrafts heading back to SYD would be full.

The 1245 hours Sunday 9 October QF35 from MEL to SIN (A333 VH-QPC) has just taken off badly late at 1646.

Arrival is predicted as 2216 which would be 261 minutes late, so one of the departures ex SIN back to east coast Oz will be late this evening.

QF685 (1355 hours MEL - ADL) took off at 1707, with B738 VH-VXJ expected to be on blocks in the wine capital at 1744, 179 minutes tardy.

The 1510 hours MEL to BNE, QF624, took off at 1710, with arrival forecast for 1815, an hour and 55 minutes late. Aeroplane is VH-VXD, another B738.

QF812 (1315 hours MEL - CBR) was airborne at a very late 1655 hours, with blocks on likely in the nation's capital at 1745 instead of 1420. Aircraft is B738 VH-VZY.

QF440 (1430 hours MEL - SYD) took off at 1705, so arrival should be at 1806 instead of 1555. B738 VH-XZM has the pleasure.

I am guessing all these delayes are the cause of QF548 delayed by ~40 minutes. SMS received ~2 hours ago.

That's now 5 flights in a row. Equilibrium restored.

JohnK, pardon me for being obtuse, but when you talk of 'five flights in a row' and 'equilibrium restored' are you referring to how you often travel on VA and suffer delays but are now experiencing them on QF, or something else?

My last 5 flights QF-PG-AK-D7 and now QF over 11 days have experienced delays.

That should be an impossible statistic to achieve. Equilibrium restored.

Thank you JohnK.

QF689, the 1440 hours MEL - ADL (B738 VH-VXT) took off at 1718, with arrival likely at 1759 instead of 1530 hours.
