Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Due to the delayed QF64, Monday 8 July's QF64 from JNB is predicted to depart 65 minutes late at 2015 with Tuesday 9 seeing SYD at gate arrival as 1545 hours mid afternoon, 50 late. The aircraft will then (at this stage) form the 1740 hours QF73 SYD - SFO.

A change in aircraft is often possible but with fewer B744s, probably less likely though it depends whether there's another B744 spare in SYD tomorrow.

QF79, the 0910 hours Tuesday 9 July MEL - NRT is expected to depart half an hour late. QF29 to HKG should depart 40 late at 1020 hours.

In recent weeks there have been many delays on these two flights, which as noted in the case of Japan sometimes swaps aircraft with the ex-BNE flight in NRT.

UPDATE: QF29 has become a 1045 hours departure. with arrival at 1810, 50 behind.

FURTHER UPDATE: It pushed back at 1059 with arrival estimated as 1828 hours, 68 late.

B738 VH-VZY on QF589 (0820 hours BNE long trip across to PER) did not become airborne until 0924 so forecast arrival is 1245, 50 late.

QF63 pushed back 39 late at 1134 so JNB arrival should be at 1730, half an hour late.

The 1045 hours MEL - CBR (QF816, B738 VH-XZF) took off at 1135 so arrival is an estimated 35 late at 1225.

B744 VH-OEG is arriving in SYD at 1537 hours.

QF415 (Wednesday 10 July, the 0800 hours SYD - MEL departed at 0828 and took off at 0844 with B738 VH-VZC. Arrival should be at 1008 hours, 33 late.

A332 VH-EBS on QF508, also the 0800 hours but to BNE was at 0852 ready for takeoff, so it will be at least 40 late.

QF409, the 0700 hours SYD - MEL has class leader A332 VH-EBA and although taking off at 0733 (only about 20 late), arrival is not until a predicted 0920 (45 late) due to holding above Mt Buller and subsequently having to land on runway 34.

The 0815 hours CBR down to MEL was airborne at 0838, roughly 10 minutes late but VH-VZI is arriving at 1005, 40 minutes late.

QF870 (0825 hours MEL - HTI, VH-VZJ) took off at 0933 hours so arrival at 1211, 46 late is anticipated.

Continuing with Wednesday 10 July, QF418, the 0900 hours MEL - SYD was in the sky at 1051. Arrival for B738 VH-VXJ should be at 1059, 34 minutes behind schedule,

QF93 (0900 hours MEL - LAX A388) departed unusuaqlly late at 1003, so arrival has become a same day estimated 0743, 103 minutes behind schedule. It will be interesting to observe if QF11, the 0820 hours LAX across to JFK B789 is held for connectees ex Melbourne. Touch and go: if 'the 93' was arriving at 0800, no chance but 0743 may be a more favourable outcome given that QF15 departed BNE 31 late at 1051 with same day LAX arrival estimated as 0635, 35 minutes behind the timetable.

QF81, the 1010 hours SYD - SIN is expected to push back 125 minutes tardy at 1215 hours.

Although QF79 (0910 hours morning MEL - NRT) was only two minutes late off blocks, arrival is predicted as 1908 tonight, 33 late.

It is unusual for QF79 and its BNE colleague QF61 to be both delayed on the same day, but the latter departed 55 late with arrival in NRT looking like 1847 in the early evening, 52 minutes behind the timetable.

The 0940 hours MEL - HKG QF29 has also experienced many delays recently. Today with A333 VH-QPH is not an exception, having departed at 1016 (36 late) with arrival suggested as 1803 in the early evening local time, 43 down.

QF35 (1155 hours very late morning MEL A388 up to SIN) is forecast to push back 35 late.

Unlike its MEL counterpart, QF97 (currently the 1010 hours BNE - HKG) is often 'on the knocker' but on 10 July departure is predicted at 1300 with arrival at 1925 tonight, an even two hours tardy.

Retro-liveried VH-XZP (B738) is matching with behind its timetable performance on 10 July 2019 as QF683, the 1125 hours MEL - ADL did not take off until 1258. Arrival should be 1333 hours, 78 late.

Continuing with Wednesday 10 July...QF35 (1155 hours very late morning MEL A388 up to SIN) is forecast to push back 35 late....

It departed at 1239, 44 late and took off at 1311 hours with A388 VH-OQE. It should arrive SIN at 1858 this evening, 63 minutes behind schedule. As a result, QF36, the 2015 hours redeye back down to MEL should depart about half an hour late if minimum turnaround time can be achieved, something that among many other occurrences requires passengers to be cooperative and not delay boarding by declining to emerge from what AFFer JohnPhelan calls the "barrrrrr...."

QF485 on 10 July 2019, the 0935 hours MEL - PER has A332 VH-EBA and is far from punctual, having become airborne at 1319 hours. Arrival is displaying as 1511 hours, 206 late. As noted above, this aircraft was delayed 48 minutes arriving mid morning on QF409 ex SYD, but it must have required attention in MEL as it spent far more time there than one would normally expect.

This will delay QF476, the 1245 hours lunchtime PER to MEL to what the yet to update QF computer says is '1500 hours', but 1600 hours, 195 late, is far more likely unless gate numbers and hence operating aircraft are changed.

A332 VH-EBL is not far behind 'the 285' and is operating QF769, the 1240 hours MEL - PER, in the sky at 1327. Arrival is estimated as 1521, 31 late.

QF682 (1105 hours ADL - MEL, B738 VH-XZL) took off at 1231. It should be at its destination aerobridge at 1403 this afternoon, 68 late.

The 1200 'high noon' MEL up to SYD, QF431 was not pointing skywards until 1340. Arrival looks like 1449 hours, 84 late for VH-VXL.

QF616 (1210 hours MEL - BNE, VH-VXP, is similar, having taken off at 1338 for projected at gate arrival of 1532, 72 minutes tardy.

The 1300 hours MEL - SYD has VH-VZR, taking off at 1351 as QF434. Arrival at gate should be 1500, 35 late.

In more on 10 July 2019, QF525, the 1205 hours lunchtime BNE - SYD took off at 1302 with B738 VH-VZY. Arrival is likely at 1418, 38 minutes down.

QF529 on the same route (VH-VZI) is the 1305 hours in the sky at 1416, so at gate arrival is estimated as 51 late at 1431 hours.

I've not read the paywalled article but 'The Australian' online suggests that QF has found that up to six A388s may have "potential" small cracks, but suggests there's no adverse implications for safe operation.

Are they only "potential" because QF engineers undertaking an "A" 30-hour (about monthly) check cannot easily inspect the areas of the aircraft that may be afflicted, but there are telltale signs?

One can't be half pregnant, so use of the word "potential" is confusing if one's not viewed the entire story.

The 1210 hours SYD - MNL (QF19) on Wednesday 10 July pushed back 35 minutes behind schedule with arrival estimated as 35 late at 1905, delaying QF20 by a likely half an hour to 2030 ex the Philippine capital.

As if to prove the previous post, QF443, the 1500 hours SYD - MEL took off at 1531 with B738 VH-XZI. Arrival is delayed until 1710 hours, 35 late.

QF445 (the 1530 ex SYD following flight) is a little worse, having become airborne at 1614 with VH-VXB. Arrival should be at 1744, 39 late.

The next southbound, QF447, the 1600 hours was up up and away at 1644 with at gate arrival predicted as 1825 hours, 50 late. Delays are thus gradually increasing.

The 1745 hours southbound SYD - MEL, QF457 has been cancelled.

QF450, the 10 July 1630 hours MEL - SYD northbound (B738 VH-VXK)) departed at 1728 and was not airborne until 1746, nine minutes before it is meant to be arriving at its destination aerobridge. Arrival is an estimated 1858, 63 minutes behind schedule.

Typical winds at 1730 hours at MEL were 57kmh but gusting to 70, the latter equivalent to 38 knots.

QF1, Tuesday 10 July's flagship 1555 hours SYD - SIN - LHR A388 is predicted to depart mid evening at 2030 hours, 275 minutes behind schedule. The intermediate stop is forecast as 0240 to 0405 on Thursday 11 with LHR arrival 1040 hours, 255 late.

Given the extremely long turnaround allowed in London, QF2 on Thursday night should not - in theory - be adversely affected time wise.

The Wednesday night 1755 hours MEL - ADL (QE697, VH-XZI) was in the sky at 1922 so arrival is 1959 hours, 74 minutes tardy.

QF2328 BNE-BDB has a revised departure at 20 15, 50 min behind schedule.
QF2086 MEL-MQL has a suggested departure at 20 00, 50 min tardy.
QF1051 BME-MEL (B738 VH-XZC) arrived at 19 02, 87 min late.
QF476 PER-MEL (A332 VH-EBA) is expected at 21 39, 69 min behind schedule.

Cancellation for
QF634 MEL-BNE 19 10 hours service.
QF457 SYD-MEL 17 45 hours.
QF484 MEL-SYD 19 15 hours.
QF463 SYD-MEL 18 30 hours.
QF467 SYD-MEL 19 30 hours.
QF494 MEL-SYD 21 00 hours.

QF43, the 1630 hours 10 July 2019 SYD - DPS departed unusually late at 1820 hours with predicted arrival 2258 late tonight local time, 113 minutes behind schedule. VH-EBD is the A332. It was in SYD all day after arriving on QF568, the redeye ex PER, at 0701, 56 late this morning so it may have been delayed while under maintenance.

Tonight's 2225 hours DPS back down to SYD redeye QF44 is expected as a result to depart at the stroke of midnight.

QF474, the 1815 hours MEL - SYD took off at 1937 with B738 VH-VZI. Estimated arrival is 2049 hours, 69 behind the timetable.

It's down to a single runway at MEL (east-west 09/27 is closed) due to the strong winds.
