Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Flyerqf, re QF23D, the other issue is that assuming passengers' ultimate destination (for the majority was MEL and not SYD), how the heck does QF (even with its subsidiary JQ's flights) get travellers down from SYD to MEL tonight given that most would be unlikely to clear customs until at least 1910 hours?

Sunday night usually sees domestic flights on the SYD - MEL route full or very close to it.

Do you mean QF30D? If so I am not sure how the passengers will travel onwards to MEL. I assume that at this stage until we hear otherwise that the flight will continue on to MEL tonight.

Looks like the QF30D aircraft (VH-QPC) is operating QF148 to AKL. Must have diverted to SYD for operational reasons and passengers must be being sent to MEL via domestic flights either tonight or tomorrow.

While these 'operational reasons' must be complex (bearing in mind crew placement and requirements and passenger seat occupancy rates among others) and if QF149 did not operate, that would mean a returning flight from AKL back to Australia (QF140) would also have to be cancelled tomorrow, at face value it seems poor that MEL-bound passengers on QF30D (apologies: not QF23D) may have to suffer with an overnight stay in Sydney after already experiencing a 12 hour delay in Hong Kong.

If so, this means arriving in Melbourne not far short of 24 hours late. Unimpressive!

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Out of interest and without suggesting others are incorrect - because there can be nuances and moot points - the QF website flight arrivals and departures shows QF30D as a 'diversion' to SYD, as Flyerqf suggests, as if it was originally travelling down to MEL not SYD and was then altered. It landed at 1839 tonight in SYD.

'Diversion' is ambiguous from the travelling public's (non specialist interest) point of view. A 'planned diversion' is still not a flight that reaches the destination to which one was booked according to the PNR routing (in this case non stop.) However a 'diversion' might mean in aviation-speak a post-takeoff development such as a medical emergency.

To add an extra dimension, I have latterly noted a couple of PR flights bound for MEL tracking via SYD (goodness knows why as it added time to the trip); Philippines is normally overflown by HKG flights.

milehighclub or others might be kind enough to fill us in as to any cause for QF30D's diversion. Flyerqf says 'operational requirements' as in some need to operate QF148 from SYD to AKL.

Does look like it was always intended to fly to Sydney today.

Sunday night back to Auckland and Monday morning back in to Sydney would be very busy you'd think, a lot of feed in to US/Asia bound flights. Likewise with the transcons. This may have been the "least worst" solution compared to downgauging SYD-AKL-SYD or pinching any spare 330 on the ground and downgauging SYD-PER-xx_ tomorrow.

The flight using VH-QPC, QF149 (not QF148 as Flyerqf suggested) is the scheduled 1925 hours SYD - AKL.

On 26 November, it took off at 2053. AKL arrival is estimated at 0131 hours on Monday 27, 66 minutes late. Tomorrow, this aircraft should operate QF140, the 0655 hours AKL - SYD.

26 November 2017 - Not sure if it is the correct flight no (QF434) but flight from MEL to SYD was delayed/possibly cancelled because according to announcements in lounge the inbound plane was struck by lightning and needed to undergo checks. When I left the MEL lounge @ 1.00pm the flight was rescheduled to 3.00pm

On Monday 27 November, A388 VH-OQB on QF2, the DXB - SYD second sector should arrive 36 minutes behind time at 0706.

The HKG - MEL QF30 overnight (A333 VH-QPF) looks to be arriving at 0740 hours, 65 minutes tardy while A332 VH-EBL on QF42 from CGK to SYD should be at its allocated arrival gate at approximately 0744 hours, 94 minutes late.

Although QF had estimated that the delayed QF24 would depart BKK at 0200 this morning (Monday 27 November), this occurred at 0240. Hence SYD arrival has been further put back to an estimated 1558 this afternoon, 508 minutes tardy. In turn, this will then delay QF81 (scheduled 1135 hours SYD - SIN) to an estimated 1720 hours late this afternoon, with forecast Lion City arrival at 2230 hours this evening, 345 minutes behind schedule.

The 1915 hours SIN back overnight to SYD, QF82, is displaying as a 2245 hours departure but if it is formed by QF81 this will prove to be optimistic.

Continuing with Monday 27 November, the 1030 hours SYD - BKK (QF23) departed 59 minutes behind schedule; arrival is suggested as 1654 this afternoon local time, 44 minutes tardy.

Earlier, QF79 departed MEL 34 late at 0945 with anticipated NRT arrival at 1820, 35 late.

QF11, the SYD - LAX longhaul commenced pushing back at 1201 hours, 31 late. Forecast arrival is half an hour behind, same day, at 0650.

DPS is closed due to ongoing volcanic activity of Mt Agung so QF's return flight is cancelled. The far smaller neighbouring LOK airport is also supposedly closed, though I just observed a Citilink flight that appeared to have taken off at about 1300 hours Sydney time. There is plenty of information on the Internet so I won't duplicate that here.

The 1335 hours quite lengthy SYD - PEK flight (QF107) is expected to depart 100 minutes late at 1515 with arrival at 2350, 95 late. This will delay tonight's QF108 overnight to SYD.

The A388-operated QF7 from SYD to DFW is predicted to depart 65 minutes late at 1545 hours.

Sunday 26 November's QF9 departed MEL 22 late at 2347. On Monday 27, it arrived DXB at 0708 (38 late) but departure has been put back to a predicted 0955 hours, 85 minutes late for a forecast 65 minute delayed, 1345 arrival at busy LHR.

On Monday 27, QF7 pushed back later than suggested - at 1621. Arrival in distant DFW should be at 1410 (70 late.)

A333 VH-QPC that was diverted from HKG to SYD yesterday to operate QF149 to AKL has not turned a passenger carrying tyre since arriving in SYD on 27 November at about 0817 hours as QF140.

Wednesday 29 November will see QF408 (0700 hours early morning MEL - SYD) getting the boot.

Like on Tuesday 28, QF43, the 1655 hours Wednesday 29 SYD - DPS and the 2120 hours QF44 (DPS -SYD)have been cancelled, as is the case with most if not all other airlines' flights to and from Bali, although some are reviewing the situation tomorrow morning. The media articles state that Mt Agung may be about to experience a major eruption, perhaps 'in hours not days' according to one source.

In further on Wednesday 29 November, QF73 (scheduled 1755 from SYD to SFO) is predicted to depart 65 minutes late. It is to be formed by QF64 (B744 VH-OEB) that last night departed JNB 78 minutes late at 2008 with arrival today in SYD estimated at 1704 hours, 94 late.

QF7, the 1440 hours from SYD to DFW (A388 VH-OQI) has become a 1530 hours but by 1537 had not commenced its pushback. Google shows it as a 1555 hours expected departure: just how it knows ahead of an update on QF's website is a mystery.

UPDATE: QF7 departed at 1549 hours.

The current ash forecast has the ash cloud moving to the south east away from DPS in the next few hours.

Himeno, I saw somewhere that the airfield at DPS will have to be cleared of ash (as some has settled, allegedly) before flights can resume.

The delay to QF73 has extended to at least 2000 hours in its SYD departure on 29 November.

UPDATE: QF73 departed SYD at 2042 hours. SFO arrival should be at 1435 same day, 130 late.
