Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Yes, one of them went so far as to state or imply that this operational mode was unsafe if I recall. Unfortunately finding the said post on websites like this is very difficult as I would either have to trawl through hundreds of posts, or remember what search terms to use - a Herculean task.

Parallel operations are not unsafe per se. I expect that any comment would have related to PRM approaches.

Due to Thursday 30 March's QF107 being delayed, QF108 from PEK to SYD departed 190 minutes behind schedule at 0255 on Friday 31 March. Arrival is predicted as 1740, 200 minutes late. This had been an unusually long turnaround in PEK, as A332 VH-EBG had landed at 0117.

B738 VH-XZB on QF924 (0810 hours Friday 31 March 2017 SYD - CNS) did not take off until 1034. Arrival is predicted as 1216, 121 late.

Later on Friday 31 March, QF35 (1245 MEL up to SIN) is displaying as delayed in its departure until 1415 but the delay appears to be longer. SIN arrival was estimated at 1855, an hour behind, but that may now blow out.

UPDATE: VH-EBQ (A332) on QF35 deparetd at 1448 and was in the sky at 1504; arrival should be at 1910 hours, 75 minutes late.

QF474 (1815 hours MEL - SYD) has been cancelled.

Thursday 30 March's QF12 (B744-operated) from JFK to LAX departed at 1813, 63 minutes late and arrived at 2215, 75 minutes behind schedule. QF12 (A388-operated) then departed from LAX at 2326 hours, 56 late with Saturday 1 April 2017 arrival in SYD predicted as 0805, 45 minutes late.

QF16 (B744) departed LAX on Friday 31 March at 0027 hours, 57 minutes late with Saturday 1 April arrival likely at 0645 hours, just 35 minutes late.

Also on Friday 31 March, QF582, the 1350 hours PER across to SYD that was airborne at 1447 (A332 VH-EBN) should arrive at roughly 2132, 32 minutes behind schedule.

A388 VH-OQF on the delayed QF8D ex DFW is close to SYD and should arrive at about 2240 on Friday 31 March.

April 1 QF1555 SYD to ADL delayed due to late arrival from BNE.

was departing 14.50 and arriving 16.30, now scheduled to board 15.20

At first we were told no meal allowance if staying with friends. I explained we didn't expect our friends to feed us for a Qantas delay after 9pm when we would arrive and was eventually told to get a receipt for anything and there would be a process to claim.

We need an EU261! Carriers in/out of Australia already get off lightly, and then want to deny a dinner claim :(

The Friday 31 March 2017 QF2 from LHR reached DXB marginally late at just after 0730 hours on Saturday 1 April. Despite departing just 18 minutes late at 0933, its Sunday 2 SYD arrival is suggested as 0610, an hour behind.

On Saturday 1 April at about 1510 hours (14 hours 45 minutes late), A388 VH-OQF is about to pull up at the DXB terminal on the (ex SYD overnight delayed) QF1.

Friday 31 March's delayed QF1 departed DXB at 1654 (instead of 0210) on Saturday 1 April so LHR arrival has become 2120 hours. This will make it difficult for the delayed QF2 to depart prior to 2300 - QF is claiming 2250.

QF9 arrived LHR at 1343 on Saturday 1 April, 27 minutes early and is fairly quickly turning around (as previously advised above) to form QF10 at a 150 minute delayed 1600 hours.

The delayed QF1 arrived LHR at about 2113 on Saturday 1 April, but did not depart as QF2 (A388 VH-OQF) until 2335 hours, exactly two hours late. It took off at 2351. DXB arrival has become 0925 hours, an hour and 55 minutes late. QF has yet to change the estimated times for the DXB - SYD sector but arrival in the latter will almost certainly be an hour or more later than the scheduled (with the time change in Australia) arrival of super early 0510 hours.

Meanwhile QF10 ex LHR (A388 VH-OQE) also on Saturday 1 departed LHR at 1557, 147 minutes tardy due to being unusually formed by the QF9 arrival. QF10 arrived DXB at 0154 on Sunday 2 April, 139 minutes behind schedule, and was showing as allegedly departing at 0315 for a 70 minute late, 2205 hours arrival in MEL tonight. This will delay the Sunday late evening QF9 back from MEL to DXB and LHR.

UPDATE: QF10 pushed back in DXB at 0333 but did not take off until about 0415 due to heavy traffic. QF expects it to arrive in MEL at 2300 tonight, meaning a likely departure time for the Sunday 2 April QF9 from MEL of about 0145 hours (almost two hours late) for the journey back to DXB and LHR.

QF2254, the 0800 hours morning Sunday 2 April SYD - LDH departed at 0848 with arrival predicted for 1122, 52 minutes tardy.

QF95, the recently reinstated less than daily second flight from MEL to LAX was airborne at 1255, about 45 late given its pushback allotted time of 1150 hours. B744 VH-OEH should arrive (same day) 35 minutes late at 0935.

The 1145 hours MEL - SIN (QF35, A333 VH-QPA) departed at 1223; arrival should be 45 minutes behind schedule at 1840 this evening.

In further on Sunday 2 April, QF107 (A332 VH-EBG, the 1225 hours SYD - PEK that was airborne at 1333 hours) should pull in to its designated arrival gate at 2310 hours, 55 minutes late. Expect QF108 to be delayed from its scheduled 2345 hours departure to one around 0025 on Monday 3.

The delayed QF2 arriving in SYD on Monday 3 April did not depart DXB until 1122 on Sunday 2, 127 minutes behind schedule so Monday arrival is predicted for 0700 hours, 110 minutes late. This ought not lead to any delays for outbound A388 Monday 3 April flights ex SYD as all have decent allowed turnaround times.

The 0950 hours QF23 from SYD to BKK on Sunday 2 was only nine minutes late departing, but arrival is suggested as half an hour behind at 1710.

QF107 (1225 hours SYD - PEK) departed at 1418; arrival is forecast for 2310 hours, 55 minutes late.

Continuing with Sunday 2 April, QF457 (1745 hours SYD down to MEL that was in the sky at 1849) should pull in to its designated arrivals gate at around 2009, 49 minutes late.

Television news was reporting tonight in Melbourne that ROK airport would be closed from 12 noon on Monday 3 April 2017 account expected flooding. The airport terminal building was being sandbagged, and there was speculation that the airport could be closed for weeks. Time will tell.

I saw that about Rockhampton. Stay safe everyone as that is a huge amount of water looking to exit.

Monday 3 April sees QF130, the redeye from PVG down to SYD (A333 VH-QPB) likely to arrive 84 minutes late at 0954 hours. As the 1955 hours scheduled from PVG on Sunday evening, it did not take off until 2210 so on a gate-to-gate basis it will have made up a lot of time.

The delayed late Sunday night QF9 departed from MEL at 0049 on Monday 3 April, 114 minutes late. The DXB stop is forecast from 0835 to 1005, the latter an hour late with predicted LHR arrival of 1500, 50 minutes behind schedule.

While weather and airline traffic (congestion) conditions are far from identical every day, this rather begs the question: If QF expects that 64 minutes can be taken out of the schedule on this complete gate-to-gate trip, why aren't the timetables adjusted to reflect these achievable faster journey times?

Simple: schedule padding making for better looking on-time reliability stats.

See it every where and I think it is "expectation management". Probably sensible for QF given the delays I see you reporting so regularly.
Appreciate your diligence.

ayebee, many thanks. Innovative name for this practice.

Others such as eminere may call it 'schedule padding', a good description. Speeding up the timetables (overall for the whole route in total) by half an hour to 40 minutes might be a reasonable compromise.

It is very common to see international flights having an extra half an hour inserted into the timetable: it isn't just QF that does this.

In further on Monday 3 April, QF7, a normally punctual flight, departed SYD 20 minutes late at 1250 hours. DFW same day arrival is predicted for 1350 - 50 minutes behind.

Earlier, QF29, the 1020 hours morning nicely timed MEL - HKG B744 (VH-OJT) took off at exactly 1200 'high noon' after pushing back at 1145 hours. Arrival is suggested as 1820, just 20 minutes late but at HKG after about 1730 hours, it gets very busy so sometimes there can be further delays close to the end of a flight.

QF1789 a B717 service from TSV-BNE didn't operate today, all pax put onto a replacement flight QF2433 operated by. Dash 8, presuming a B717 either went tech in BNE or that's a sneaky new yield management technique for TSV-BNE flights that I haven't seen before.

QF10, the scheduled 2055 hours arrival in MEL on Monday 3 April ex DXB and prior to that LHR is expected to come in half an hour late. This will delay the returning QF9 by at least a few minutes as often in Melbourne the A388 turnaround from QF10 to QF9 takes two hours or slightly in excess of that. However turnarounds elsewhere of as little as an hour and 38 minutes at the end of a journey - not an intermediate stop - have been observed.

The 1450 hours mid afternoon QF777 from MEL across to PER (A332 VH-EBF) was in the sky at 1618; arrival is forecast for 1808, 68 minutes late.
