Qantas Delays/Cancellations

While QF10 departed LHR at 1245 on Thursday 23 February as above, the winds may have forced it back to the gate as it is now showing as having pushed back at 1453 for an expected Friday 24 February arrival at 0150 hours, two hours and 50 minutes late in DXB. Departure from the latter will then be at a predicted 0315 - quite a fast stop and sometimes unattainable - which would be 130 late for a MEL arrival at 2300 hours tonight, 95 minutes late.

Therefore, the Friday 24 February QF9, the scheduled 2325 hours, will again be delayed with the earliest possible departure at 0040 on Saturday 25 February, but quite likely to be later due to every chance of the DXB stop being longer than QF's 'sunny outlook' of just 85 minutes.

Advice from anyone who was on board QF10 would be great. The Thursday 23 QF2 was unaffected, departing bang on time at 2045 hours so LHR must have reduced its delays by then.

QF117 on Friday 24 February, the 1325 hours SYD - HKG is predicted to depart 65 minutes late with consequent arrival at 2050 rather than 1950.

QF19 from SYD to MNL is anticipated to depart half an hour behind at 1255. For a while, this flight was often an A333 but except for a typical one of its five weekly departures appears to have been downgraded 9in terms of J comfort, at least) to an A332, probably because QF has begun additional flights such as the QF79/QF80 MEL - NRT - MEL rotation.

The delayed QF10 did not depart DXB until 0343 hours on Friday 24 February after a stop of 117 minutes, so it was 158 late on departure. MEL arrival is predicted at 2352 hours late tonight, 147 minutes tardy, meaning at the earliest a departure for tonight's QF9 at 0130 on Saturday 25, and even that may be a tad optomistic.

The late QF19 should arrive MNL 35 behind at 1810.

B744-operated QF73 is to depart SYD at about 1630 not 1500 hours for its TransPacific trip to SFO.

UPDATE: QF73 is further delayed to an expected 1700 hours departure.

Also on Friday 24 February, QF444 (B738 VH-XZB, the 1530 hours MEL - SYD that was in the sky at 1620) should arrive at 1737, 42 minutes late.'

VH-VZE on the following 1545 hours northbound took off at 1632; it should be at its destination gate at around 1743, 3 minutes tardy.

QF107, the recently introduced 1350 hours from SYD to PEK (A332 VH-EBG) was not airborne until 1453 so arrival is not forecast until about 2311 hours, 31 late.

QF117 (1325 hours SYD up to HKG, A333 VH-QPF) took off at 1447 this afternoon. It should be on blocks at about 2042, 52 minutes late.

jastel, great post. It's late at night and perhaps I am wrong, but do you perhaps mean 'QF62?' I don't think there is a regularly scheduled 'QF60' at present.

Which NRT (Tokyo) hotel were you put in?

On Thursday 23 February, there is poor weather (storm Doris) at LHR with many flights delayed. QF10, the 1155 hours from LHR to DXB and MEL has been delayed to an expected 1220 in its departure.

UPDATE: A388 VH-OQF (QF10) departed LHR 50 minutes late at 1245.

Yes, sorry, you are right it was originally QF62 TOK - BNE...so many changes.

It was the Hotel Tobu...only about 500m walk from T3, but nobody around at midnight to point us in the right direction.
Would have been quicker to walk as no cabs for a while either, I guess as no flights were supposed to be there.
Seemed to be about 10 couples/groups all going to the same one at the taxi rank.
I would use it again for an overnight...has everything you need...now I know where it is I would walk there but.

Anyhow I enjoyed my extra day in Tokyo, bit of a sleep in, then went into town and up the Skytree as not done that before, and back in line at 15:45 to be the first Business Class pax to be checked in at 16:00 and then into the lounge.

QF10 is now coming in at 0007 hours on Saturday 25 February, 162 minutes late with an 0200 projected departure for 'the 9' (instead of 2325 hours on Friday night) as one esteemed AFFer calls it. LHR arrival is predicted two hours late at 1440, but that's a long way (and time) off so perhaps a little early to accurately predict.

What percentage of business class passengers try to pretty much go straight off to sleep (despite lights on overhead) and decline most or all food and drink at 0300 hours when departing more than two hours late from MEL, or does almost everyone stay up and "enjoy" the meal and drinks because it's all part of the J (or F) experience?

It would be inaccurate to claim that QF9 is always late but it is delayed fairly frequently. My perception is that delays of at least an hour departing MEL occur several times a month and sometimes 50 per cent of the time. AFF member Pleb Status may have an even harsher view based on his previous posts if I recall.

FlightStats gives QF9 a rating of 'zero out of five' for its mixed punctuality and reliability score. Of the 61 most recent flights, 25 have been on time; 24 have been 'very late' or 'excessive.' It would be preferable if the measure stretched back a year as these 61 flights have all been in the UK winter (that in theory means that QF10 may have a greater chance of being late into MEL), this delaying QF9. Fog and sandstorms in DXB are other considerations that would be reflected in an annual calculation. Flighstats is unable to differentiate between airline causes of delay such as mechanical breakdowns or staffing issues versus weather related delays.

While it has some 'competition' at times from QF12 across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Sydney, QF9 must be close to QFi's worst flight for timekeeping, but this does not mean that it is delayed every day. As always, it has an element of pot luck. It is the complete antithesis of QF25/QF26 on the SYD - HND and return run that has almost a perfect timekeeping record: often early, particularly northbound.

QF MEL-WEL last night departed a couple of hours late (as I heard it pass overhead at 0130.....)

On Saturday 25 February, QF94 arriving in MEL ex LAX should do so at around 1024, 84 minutes late with A388 Vh-OQB as the taskmaster. This will delay QF93 back to LAX by around an hour if all goes well.

Further north, QF12 (VH-OQE) to SYD is predicted to be at its arrival gate at roughly 0926, 56 late.

QF130 has diverted to BNE

QF418 has returned to MEL

Sydney was down to one runway due to urgent maintenance this morning which caused these diversions and several others including long haul from flights from Hong Kong (CX) and USA (DL)

Sat 25 Feb: QF2281/2 MEL-LST-MEL cancelled. Ex-LST passengers rebooked on QF1571 departing 14:15.

At LST we received $20 vouchers for lunch!

QF23, the Saturday 25 February 0945 SYD to BKK departed at 1044 with suggested arrival an hour behind at 1635.

The diverted QF130 (thank you to Flyerqf) spent about an hour on the ground in BNE, departing at 1037 (A333 VH-QPJ) for a projected 1314 SYD arrival, 209 minutes late.

QF11 (1130 hours SYD - LAX) has been delayed in its departure until 1230.

QF129 (1055 hours SYD - PVG) was expected to depart at 1230 but has incurred a further delay to 1255.

Despite the delays of which Flyerqf advises us, a few other QFi flights ex SYD this morning were 20 minutes or less late departing.

UPDATE: A388 VH-OQL was airborne at 1256 on QF11.

QF19 (A332 VH-EBP) was in the sky at 1320. Arrival in MNL should be 50 minutes behind schedule at 1825.

A333 VH-QPF on QF129 took off at 1316. It should arrive at around 2018, 108 minutes late.

In a further Saturday 25 February 2017 delay, the 1435 hours QF7 (SYD - DFW) is expected to depart at 1630.

QF97 (1030 morning BNE - HKG) did not depart until 1145, so arrival is suggested at 1830, an hour late. This will delay one of the return flights to either BNE or MEL: often these aircraft swap in HKG.

In an update to post 4811 above, QF129, the 1055 Saturday 25 February SYD - PVG departed at 1256 with predicted arrival at 2015 instead of 1830, making for a long day for travellers.

On Sunday 26 February, the delayed QF130 from PVG to SYD is expected to arrive at 1055, 70 late after its anticipated departure this evening at 2145 instead of 2005, 100 minutes tardy.

Earlier on Saturday 25, QF93 from MEL to LAX pushed back 94 late at 1249 but same day arrival should 'only' be 50 minutes tardy at 0725. This may delay the B744 on QF11 from LAX to JFK a little.

QF15 from BNE to LAX was also late, departing 75 down at 1230; arrival should be at 0645, 45 minutes behind schedule.

The Saturday 25 February mid evening QF2 from LHR to DXB unusually departed at 2238 instead of 2045, so arrival is predicted to be 0920 today (Sunday 26) instead of 0745. Eventual SYD arrival tomorrow (Monday 27) is forecast for 0730, an hour late.

In further on Sunday 26 February, the long SYD - SCL B744-operated flight QF27 departed at 1342, 52 minutes tardy with suggested same day arrival 1200 'high noon' rather than the timetabled 1110. QF28 returning will be delayed departing but should pick up time on a gate-to-gate basis, perhaps 'neutralising' the outwards delay.

Saturday 25 February's transcontinental QF12 (B744) departed JFK 68 minutes behind schedule at 1908 hours, arriving in LAX at 2217, 82 late. Departure with an Airbus A388 was at 2339 hours, 69 minutes late. projected Monday 27 February arrival in SYD is an hour late at 0930.

As expected, QF16 (the B744 ex QF12 transcon) pushed back in LAX 67 late at 0027 on Sunday 26, meaning likely Monday 27 arrival in what may be a rainy BNE at around 0820, 75 minutes late. Fingers crossed - this should not affect timeliness of QF15's BNE - LAX journey on Monday morning given the fairly generous turnaround time.

QF2 should arrive in SYD at 0800 on Monday 27 as on Sunday 26 it departed DXB 92 late. This flight is mostly punctual.
