Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF A380s are always fully utilised everyday except for one which is always rotated into maintenance at MNL most of the year.

This "extra" airframe will be pressed into service when QF127/128 is operated by an A380 between Dec and Feb. So during this time no A380 will be rotating into MNL maintenance

The delayed Monday 31 October QF11, the 1030 from SYD to LAX took off at 1555 (325 minutes late) with A388 VH-OQD. The QF website is maintaining what may be a fictional arrival time of 1000, three and three quarter hours (225 minutes) late.

Time will tell but one doubts if the flight could take an hour and 40 minutes less than the schedule.

UPDATE: Before the plane has levelled out, the website has been updated to show a predicted arrival time (same day) of 1030 (255 minutes late). This has since again been adjusted, to 1035 hours.

Sunday 30 October's QF94 from LAX to MEL was, as usual, not held for the very late transcontinental B744 on QF12 but QF94 still departed 44 minutes behind at 2249. Melbourne Cup Day arrival should be at 0905 rather than 0800, meaning a late departure for QF93 back to LAX.

QF12 ex JFK arrived in LAX at 0037 hours on Monday 31 rather than 2055 on Sunday evening.

The A388 on QF12 departed from LAX at 0158 hours on Monday 31, not 2230 hours on Sunday evening, a delay of 208 minutes. Tuesday 1 November arrival in SYD is forecast as 1100 rather than 0730. This would be 210 minutes behind time, with the plane then to form QF7 from SYD to DFW, the timetabled 1405 hours departure.

QF16 from LAX to BNE departed at 0304 - shocking time - instead of 2320 hours (224 minutes late) with Tuesday 1 November BNE arrival predicted at 0935, 210 minutes late. QF15 is publicly displaying for Tuesday as departing punctually at 1015 but assuming it is the same B744 that arrives from LAX, this is impossible.

Qf16 departed at 3.20am!

At this stage it looks like today's Qf11 from LAX to JFK isn't delayed. The inbound 11 from Syd is significantly delayed, but the aircraft from BNE (QF15) operates the 11 to JFK.

QF15 often waits for QF11 transpacific passengers bound for JFK. Of course if very late these pax will be shunted to AA whose A321 transcontinental is quite a good product

I assume a very empty flight though without the passengers from SYD

There will probably be enough from the flights from BNE and MEL to make it worthwhile, as well as any pax on international journeys who have stopped in LAX for a while and are now continuing to JFK. Not everyone flies out of SYD.

Someone from MEL who travelled on this B744 on QF15/16 a few months ago reported to me that across the USA in each direction it was only a third full, and that was with all three Oz east coast flights operating as normal and feeding in (eastbound) or being the flight to which passengers were connecting (westbound).

However through freight to and from JFK and flight/ cabin crew member placement and pickup are also considerations, apart from minimising inconvenience to passengers to or from BNE and MEL. This Monday 31 October QF11 departed from LAX at 0845, 25 minutes late and arrived JFK seven minutes early at 1623 so it most certainly was not held for the extremely late QF11 A388 ex SYD.

I remember at one time an A330 serviced the transcontinental sectors. I am not sure whether QF stationed one at LAX jut for that route?.

Anyway this is another more realistic route for the B787. BNE-LAX-JFK-LAX-BNE or similar rather than the exotics. Though I concede that PER-LHR is in advanced discussion.

Anyway the 744 operating QF15 on Monday 31/10 did not wait for the very (>4hr)late A380 transpacific QF11. JFK bound passengers would have been shunted onto AA maybe an A321 service or offered a one night in LAX and a resumption with the next day's inbound from BNE or any other AA service via another stop somewhere in the US. Though personally would not like 1 night in LAX over 1 night in NYC.
Given a choice between an A321 to JFK or a flight to LGA, I think I would prefer JFK (only if travelling in J) as a delayed arrival into JFK at night will not encounter the traffic that JFK-NYC is renowned for

Get me to NYC anyway you can QF! Even if you have to connect me via DFW/CLT/ORD.

The much delayed QF12 is about to arrive in SYD at around 1117 on Tuesday 1 November instead of 0730 hours. VH-OQF is the A388.

Yes I had thought of that, but somehow my brain tells me there was an A330 stationed there. I cannot find a reference to that so yes it must have been the AKL tag flight

Albeit back then the 332s were an inferior product.. that has changed, although US airlines have some more attractive options as well
