Qantas cutting domestic capacity by 5%

Qantas to extend 5% domestic capacity cut into the first quarter of FY27. Also to continue routing Sydney to Paris via Singapore but will pare the frequency back to 3 services a week as planned in August.
Increased capacity on Perth to Rome will remain in place until October when seasonal service ends.

QF also suspending Sydney to Bengaluru service being temporarily suspended from August and resuming at the end of October, while JQ and Qantas to cut flights across the Tasman.

I wonder whether Qantas should discontinue Sydney to Bengaluru and replace with Perth - Bengaluru.

Bangaluru is located west of Australia, and I think it would have better catchment and also faster turnaround rather than Sydney/Melbourne direct.

Potentially this should be the same for all Middle East/South Asia/Africa destinations from Perth instead of Sydney/Melbourne. Change at Perth for destinations west of Australia.

No thanks

Given that 70% of people within Australia with Indian ancestry live in Melbourne and Sydney, no way the catchment in WA is better, it would in fact be significantly smaller.

I am not proposing to serve the Indian community in Perth only, I believe Qantas should have dedicated fleet at Perth to serve South Asia, Europe and Africa instead of flying from Sydney. That extra 4 hours of being Australia is wasting fuel and would have been better served by domestic Perth-East Coast service to be doubled to connect with them.

Just think about the extra 40-60 Status Credits you earn by flying via Perth, so much worth it.

Bengaluru seems to have high LFs but obviously it’s a low yield market. Certainly a market more suited to Indigo who will probably be here sooner or later.

I can imagine Qantas looking at Perth to Bengaluru with A321XLR once a few more arrive ,there are no competitors that fly direct from Perth to India so I imagine they could get decent load factors and probably some WA government subsidies.

Rumour is Indigo looking at Perth for its XLR. A350 will probably operate east coast eventually later on.

They won’t be able to compete with Indigo, even Jetstar would probably struggle. Huge network on the other end, and will do well here with locals once their name gets out (would be mostly unknown to Australians).
