These sandwiches have been sitting god knows where, for a week, stewing in bad bacteria, and then served to all of us today and who knows how many other unsuspecting passengers.

1) Probably somewhere in a cool-room between 1-4 degrees (And if stored correctly (ie, 1C), you can always get a day or 2 more out of a product, except for seafood/shellfish)
2) If they were in fact really, really off, you would have noticed a pretty bad smell when opening the packet, which l am guessing you didn't

Passengers of flight QF436 were given a hot beef, cream and horseradish sandwich for their lunchtime meal today

Which suggests to me that either the date was incorrect, or the sandwiches had been frozen since they had been prepared.

I have had this same sandwich on a QF flight before, it's Beef, Horseradish Cream AND Lettuce (Rocket/Roquette)
I would say wrong date, because you can't 'freeze' the lettuce and get away with it. Can't freeze any 'fresh' vegetable and not notice it.

And yet none of the pax on that flight complained their sandwich tasted off....hmm, beef infected with dangerous levels of bacteria usually tastes pretty interesting.
