A lot of money that one!
Not so bad if QP members get some benefits on the flight, maybe a shadow or something, or emergency exit seating, or something.
I was a QP member for about 3 years, paid side of things, and while it was great to be able to get some grub, the thing that deterred me from extending my membership before the "joining fee" expired, was/is that one the plane, we the pax, have to contend with being a pleb.
Nothing special, imagine paying hundreds of $ to be able to eat, but nothing to be/of benefit on the plane.
Oh, and yes, I did get that email, too.

If status members such as WP’s have to pay for exit seats QP members have no hope.

Whilst the main benefit of QP membership is lounge access, don’t forget handy benefits such as additional luggage allowance.

My theory has always been that if you're flying enough to need to use a lounge because terminals (and the great unwashed) are tedious, then your 'status' will get you into hte lounge.

I'm low 'status' and clearly don't fly enough to rise up the ranks to get lounge access. But when I fly it's either buying J with points or I have an upgrade, so I can get into the business lounge, especially the international J lounge.

To be perfectly honest, QClub as a base isn't worth the money these days. When I was younger I had the privilege of going as a guest with family when they flew and it was a nice experience - now I'd much rather pay the $10 for a beer in one of the terminal bars. There's usually better selection there anyway.

Maybe. Lots of companies have a policy of BFOD, so you may fly a mix of QF/Virgin on the cheapest Y ticket, no chance of getting status. l'm in that position myself. Have been flying a mix of QF, Virgin and sometimes the odd EK and SQ on cheapest Y. No chance of status in any of them. (Yes, priority pass maybe the the one l should purchase, but QF has flown to all the destinations l have gone to).

There are a few reasons why someone may fly regularly but be unable to obtain status.

  1. Some corporate rates book into fares that do not earn any status credits
  2. New to Qantas/Frequent Flying as a regular discount economy passenger, wanting lounge access and willing to pay for QC until they earn status.
  3. Company books cheapest available fare which means regularly travel split between a variety of airlines.
  4. FIFO workers who may not fly quite enough to obtain status (once/twice a month trans continental in discount economy), but company may reimburse/employee benefit status.
  5. Some companies do not allow employees to earn frequent flyer points/accrue status, especially some companies who contract to government and interpret certain rules strictly.
I initially started with Qantas Club when I was living in the Middle East and flying with the Qantas/Emirates tie-up. With one QC membership I was flying via Dubai to Melbourne & Sydney and gaining access to the Business Lounges in Dubai which were really beneficial (especially guesting in wife + 2 kids). Once I gained Gold the membership automatically went on hold.

Re Qantas Double-up Sale. Has anyone heard any gossip if there may be a similar offer for existing members? This offer is no use to current members. I see there is no mention of a joining fee either which is unusual. Anyone know anything?

I fly regularly and have status, but my wife who flies regularly with both our children doesn't. The majority of her flying is international, but short haul so she is Silver but won't hit Gold. The QC at International is basically equiv of QC Business Domestic in my opinion so its certainly worth it for her and the kids to have it as I'm not always with her to guest.

My theory is that it's usually not worth the price QF charges for anyone outside a specific range of, say, 500-600 SCs per year who's just short of Gold (perhaps exceptions for people who are forced to fly OW non-earning buckets, etc etc, or you're flying exclusively BFOD short haul Y...). For me (typically ~300SCs per year), I use my one silver pass a year as a treat, my Diners Club for some basic lounges overseas, and domestically I live without a lounge unless I get a J upgrade. Lounges are nice, they're just not $700/year nice unless I fly a lot more than I do.

Though, you mention kids - as someone with no dependents it's probably worth less to me. With children I suppose it's probably a different story.

I have just enquired about this offer. As a gold about to go back to silver, and with 16 months still to run on my membership, I do not qualify for this deal apparently.

Seems like the joining fee is still up, under membership types section. It's only the membership fees which have been discounted. Pretty expensive. I think PP would be cheaper and in some cases, a better alternative to the Qantas club.

What if you have been a previous QC member, do you still have to pay the joining fee? I've been a member 2 or 3 times now (through work schemes). l'm guessing the answer is yes.

Yes, Membership must be paid.

Yes, Membership must be paid and is included in the quote I am being given as below: 4 yrs averages $345/yr which I think is not bad.

  • 1 year$540.00 membership fee +$399.00 join fee$939.00 total
  • 2 years$540.00 membership fee +$399.00 join fee$939.00 total
  • 4 years$980.00 membership fee +$399.00 join fee$1,379.00 total

A friend of mine let his lapse last year mainly because he was in a coma in intensive care for 8 weeks and Qantas wanted him to pay another joining fee - he managed to talk them out of it.

. I am a current member and got it. I'm using it to renew because it's my anniversary.
