Qantas is increasing carry on weight to 10kg first piece, 4 kg second.

From The Oz:

Qantas is changing the rules for cabin baggage in response to feedback from passengers who think the 7kg per piece limit is too little.

From March 25, travellers will be allowed to carry on one item up to 10kg, and a second piece up to 4kg. Currently, Qantas passengers can carry on two pieces of luggage up to 7kg each.

The physical size limits imposed remain the same.

Wonder if international as well?
That would mean economy would have 1 10 kilos bag
Edited to say just seen the AUSBT article and only domestic

Sensible. Eveyone should be able to work within 10kgs. :)

Sensible. Effectively a rollaboard/larger carry-on plus a handbag/laptop. Now just to enforce it.......

Why do they have to be so inflexible? Why not just say 14kg total, 10kg max per piece?

Agree. Seems strange that previously you could carry two bags, each of 7kg. Now, that is not allowed. So, from that perspective, it is an Enhancement (TM).

Doesn't worry me on the Crash 8s as my hand carry gets a premium tag without being weighed.might be a problem if the start weighing bags out of MCY.

Unfortunately, according to news.com.au, the policy change doesn’t extend to QantasLink.

In >100 QantasLink flights I've only had my bags weighed once when I asked to take 4 pieces carry-on. Before you judge, it was CBR-SYD and there is always heaps of room in the overheads. Check-in staff had a laugh but were cool with it.

I would prefer it say: two pieces totalling no more than 14kgs, with no one piece to exceed 10kg + enforce only 1 item in overhead bin (unless in an exit row).

My handbag (with tablet, power pack, wallet and 2 phones and miscellaneous other stuff) can often weigh about 4.5kgs, but it always goes under the seat, then the 2nd small pack/laptop bag or carry-on case I have goes overhead (easy to keep under 8kgs for me). If iget told to move stuff from handbag to overhead bag i'll be mad!

I often only travel with carry on, and 10KG works really well,
7KG I often do feel is too lite, and inadequate.
Great work qantas for listening and taking the feedback onboard.

Good of QF to take on feedback, but makes the weight/safety argument run to date look a bit odd.

Clearly within the Qantas Group, till now at least, safety has been a tradeable commodity (want 10kg on JQ then pay). At least now there is some measure of consistency in that up to 10kg is safe - but if you want more than 7kg on JQ you pay.

It is 14 kg total, with one not greater than 10kg, + a personal bag, e.g computer bag, handnbag, camera bag

We should be so lucky on QF. Air NZ weighs premium bags at the bottom of the steps to an ATR.

From what I read in the Australian, the QF weigh-in was a trial to detrmine what people were carrying on board, Flew WLG-ADL-MEL-SYD-WLG last week with not a sign of weighing at the gate, so the trial will be over.

So now a reaction from the unions. Sounds like a receipe for more argy-bargy between pax:

( sorry, can't insert quotes around the following, from the Oz article) Note that the headline doesn't match the article content.

Qantas passengers carry own bags to save cabin crew injury

Qantas cabin crew will no longer help passengers make room for their bags in overhead lockers when a new policy allowing carry-on of up to 10kg takes effect on Monday.

The Flight Attendants Association of Australia has won that assurance from Qantas, following concerns about injuries to members as a result of the higher weight limit.

From Monday, Qantas domestic travellers will be able to carry on one bag of up to 10kg, and a second smaller bag of no more than 4kg. Qantas passengers are currently allowed to carry on two bags weighing a maximum of 7kg each. The dimensions of the carry-on bags permitted will remain the same.

As a general rule, cabin crew are not expected to help passengers lift bags into the overhead lockers, and from Monday those that cannot find room for their bag on board will have to take it to the front of the plane for stowage in the cargo hold.
