Hi,

Yes I have seen this question being asked before, but I noticed that Qantas carry-on rules have changed? Previously, the website would say that a laptop and camera bag constitute one carry-on, but I don't see that anymore on their website.

Now, they now do not put any information if a personal item is allowed in addition to a 7 kg carry-on bag. I called qantas representative twice, and got different answers for both times (one said laptop should be part of the 7 kg, the other said it is in addition to).

Together with my laptop, I might be looking at 8.5 to 9 kg. Not sure if I can get away with it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Welcome to AFF MonkeyFF :D

Are you referring to domestic or international carry-on rules?

Regardless of domestic or international, I have always been OK with a carry on AND laptop bag.

I have seen some people held up by QF staff on international flights where their carry on is a huge backpack AND they have a laptop PLUS camera bag, etc but if you have a regulation cabin bag plus laptop over your shoulder you will be OK IMO.

If International, this page may assist: Qantas - Carry on Baggage - Country Specific

The general page has been truncated/simplified, largely I guess due to the detailed info on the aforementioned page.

Anyway, in practice I have found the following examples:

  • For Domestic travel, a Laptop case may be considered one of your two items (so you can have a handbag as well [if that's your thing]).
  • For travel to the USA, a Laptop case may be considered your one "personal item" (no handbag or camera bag).

Of course, with any of this YMMV.

Thanks serfty for the reply.

I am not travelling to United States, but to Asia. You reckon a personal item is allowed in addition to 7-kg carry-on luggage? The website you mentioned did not any specific rules for Japan though..

I guess the worst they can do is to get me to check in my carry-on, although I will find it ridiculous as it is a small wheelie bag (like those stewardess use often).

FWIW, I frequently travel long-haul economy with a 105cm rollaboard and a laptop bag.

You are by rights limited to that 7Kg for your carry-on bag. The web site used to indicate TOTAL of all items to be no more than 7Kg but this is no longer the case.

These-days in practice it seems yon "Laptop bag"/"personal Item" has "no weight".

I fly QF a bit between Perth and HKG, or NRT. Always travel with an International size roll on (usually 8-9kgs) and a Laptop/camera backpack. Never been questioned or looked at twice.

I want to know how you keep this to 7Kg :?:
I don't - as long as the rollaboard in under 10Kg there seems to be little issue. As noted (with Qantas) the Laptop in the Laptop case seems to have no assessable "weight" these days.

Yeah flying back from NRT to SYD had no issues with a similiar carry on bag + a laptop.

I queried if it was ok to have a carry on bag + laptop (after you read '1 carry on only') and they didn't mind at all.

Even the caryon weighing fellow at BNE international terminal dorsnt object to a laptop plus carryon.Weighs the carryon but not with the laptop-obviously they do weigh nothing.:)

And even better (same carryon weighing fellow at BNE international). Weigh the carryon, with the lap top in it (tucked into the front and sticking out, in readiness for screening). Carryon weighs something like 12kg all up. Get told "no problems, you're allowed extra for a laptop".

Was never going to be a problem, as there were multiple bags inside the rollaboard (including laptop etc), and 2 of us, travelling J - with this the only carry-on item. I was prepared to split the bags and be well within the limits.

The funniest thing - the laptop weighs less than a kilo all up! Not only does a laptop weigh nothing, a light one reduces the weight of other things near it.:p

Agree. Have never had a problem with a backpack (containing laptop) and wheelie carry-on size bag as far as number of items is concerned. But they often want to weigh my wheelie case but never asked to weigh the backpack. So my back pack often weighs more than my wheelie case as I go airside at BNE ;).
