Sorry in advance if this is in the wrong part of the forums. Admin pls adjust if required.

I have traveled a couple of times in the past both international and domestic with The Roo and was allowed to board with my motorcycle helmet as carry on in addition to my 7 Kg bag. Planning on another trip soon with a friend and we are both going to travel light ( no checked bag) with helmets. I've been told this week by a random punter that QF no longer allow M/C helmets in the cabin due to the massive security risk or some other twaddle. Who's correct? My helmet is $1300- of brain insurance so I'm not keen on handing it over to someone unsympathetic as to its care.

TIA.

Given it's not uncommon to see large and odd carry-on items (e.g. instruments being a popular one), I wouldn't have thought you would have a problem. I'm not sure what the security risk would be.

I suggest you try your luck with the online chat feature, hopefully get the answer you want and keep a printout in case there are any issues.

Yes. Random punters say all sorts of things. It seems that the twaddle was from the punter. 😀. All good in the end.

Wear it saying it is a hat OR tell them that you are clumsy and trip over often so its to safe-guard QF from legal action :)

Be sure to keep that transcript handy.

Yep. Saved as screenshots from my phone. Annoying that you can't do online chat via your computer browser but that is a whinge for another thread.

The agent did ask if I had documents from my doctor as to why I need a helmet...

My understanding of Personal Item generally is that it must be able to be stored under the seat. If its too big for that then it falls into the Carry On category.

Documents from your doctor? Can’t imagine where the agent was based to say something like that.

The Scriptipines? Geography was never my strong suit.

👏

Perhaps wearing it may be a security risk as favoured by bank robbers and drive by shooters? I don't see why it couldn't be classified as carry on, same as all large items. Jetstar class my camera bag as carry-on and Q wanted it included during the weight-in episode.

perhaps you could just refer them to the road rules in every state and territory of Australia 😂 - that often comes as a shock to people from other countries that motorcycle and even bicycle helmets are compulsory.

I've seen ADF helmets taken onboard in their padded khaki carry bag and nobody's batted an eyelid so I would definitely have it in a carry on bag of some sort as opposed to just the helmet in your hand.

If an item isn't allowed onboard the crew would have the final say - a chat transcript from a call centre saying that's permitted is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. :p

Just wear it and say it's for extra Covid protection. They can't argue with that one ;)
I reckon they'd get out of that 'check' by handing you a face mask. Go for the 'check-mate' by saying that not wearing it would be harmful to your mental health.

In which case they’ll want to see the medical assessment that lets you fly. If the crew decide it isn’t coming on, then it won’t be.

Having said that, I don’t see any particular problem with a helmet, that you aren’t wearing.

You could claim it as an "emotional support item???"

Manila may not be able to grasp this.

I've had no issues previously with a roller case and also a melon protector on board. Even had the melon protector on a Dash 8 flight today, doesn't fit in the overheads mind you!
