Qantas Boeing [717] 'wrinkled' in hard landing in Darwin

I notice that the November Qantas Magazine shows the number of 717s as 13, whereas previous editions have shown 14.

Does this mean that QF have decided to write off the one damaged at Darwin, or have they sold it to NJS for them to worry about?

Regards,

James
No, I suspect it is in reference to VH-NXB being sold to HA. It was re-registered N489HA and went to HA at the end of October. I believe there are two more 717s due to go to HA before the end of the year.

Allco are the owner of that airframe and the operator is National Jet, the status of the wet lease to QF is undecided.

717 last night 11.02.09, QF1944 Cairns to Darwin, computer malfunction, three fire trucks on the runway to meet it. They used the longer runway and came in at high speed.

Does anyone know what has happened to the 717 that was wrinkled in the heavy landing at Darwin:?:

Has the final ATSB report been published:?:

I just came across this old thread because I fly in 717s fairly often. I am pretty sure I've been on VH-NXE since then but I won't guarantee my memory on that completely.
I'll keep an eye out for it to try and confirm.

Incidentally, I keep an eye out for VH-NXK too because I was on it two years ago when it had an in-flight engine shutdown on a flight from ZNE-PER. It made me an anxious flier for a while but I'm better now. :(

If anyone's interested in that flight the full report is now on the ATSB site if you type VH-NXK into the search. Not enought posts yet for me to post links!

I love the QF Link 717's.... wish they would bring them back to TAS (although we have recently been upgraded to Q400's out of LST and Devonport which are almost as good :))

Thanks docjames!

I'm not generally superstitious but while we were flying in the 717 with just the one engine it was noted by a few of us that the date was Friday the 13th!

Not so good for the BME-PER I did last Sunday, though. No IFE! On the 734/73H's that fly this route (operated by Qantas, not Qantaslink) you at least get your IFE.

Normally not an issue, but I left my laptop backpack in ZNE so was without iPod/Laptop/etc!!

 EEEK!

'twas left in the unit we had occupied the night before, the store manager picked it up for me and freighted back to PER, it arrived 11.30am the next morning (Friday). I was safely re-united with it on the Monday:!:

As I sit here eating those surprisingly satisfying Qantas Santos pretzels I scavenged from my flight I just thought I would let you know that there is definitely a 717 operating under then name of VH-NXE because I was on it from PBO to PER this arvo.

So I wonder if they really did end up spending more than the value of the plane on repairs just to protect their reputation.

From my experience a solid 'thumpdown' landing is common in summer in the North-West in a 717. The air can often be very dry and thin and combined with the minimum length strips at places like ZNE, PBO and maybe KTA they are not always smooth.
Somone on a flight to ZNE in 07 said that some passengers screamed and one person said he had put his back out from the hard landing they had.

Also, a fully filled flight from ZNE to PER I was on had to send a lot of our checked baggage on the following day's flight because of weight restrictions thanks to the same thin summer air conditions combined with the airstrip length.

I am not claiming to know much about the technical details and stats for these but just sharing my experiences for interest's sake.

FWIW, NXE operated the following flights yesterday:
Code:
07/07/09 NXE 717

QF1812 PER 0805 0805 PHE 1010 0950 0957 +13
QF1813 PHE 1050 1050 PER 1250 1249 1252 +2
QF1806 PER 1430 1430 PBO 1610 1555 1600 +10
QF1807 PBO 1650 1650 PER 1830 1829 1831 +1
