Qantas Blown Tyres on its 747-800

Deflated tyres are a common result of an aborted take-off. The tyres get very hot under heavy breaking and have pressure release values to deflate the tyres before they explode. Its interesting to see this commonly reported as "tyres blown on take-off", rather than what is generally more accurate as "tyres deflated as a result of aborted take-off".

I was commenting on the difference in the stories:

The Australian: Aborted takeoff due to tyres blowing
SMH: Tyres blowing due to aborted takeoff

The SMH article seems more accurate to me.

Indeed that would seem to be most reasonable assumption.

Very true. For the sake of selling a few more papers they ignore the fact that this is a design & safety feature.

If anyone is interested, in the Boeing 777 DVD box set, there is video footage of this being tested for 777 certification. The aircraft is taken to take off speed before the brakes are fully applied. Then they taxi the aircraft to a safe area and let it sit for 5 mins before the fire crews are allowed to extinguish the over heated brakes.

Result, all tyres deflate safely and alloy wheels melt. Reported cost is approx $1M USD to replace all wheels & tyres.

Isnt this the same incident type as the LAX "Qantas passenger in runaway terror ordeal" not long ago?

I can't believe that there have 7 posts in this thread and not one mention of outsourcing of engineering ;)

Yes, it is not uncommon.

And no mention of the beer consumption in the QP while awaiting an alternate flight .
