Qantas apologises to frequent flyers with status extensions, lounge passes, points & more reward seats

From Qantas newsroom:

"12 months status extension across tiered members Silver and above to continue to enjoy the benefits associated with their tier for another year."

From pointhacks - tiered frequent flyers will ‘enjoy the benefits associated with their tier for another year.’

Boss Hunting - "With another year added to the Qantas status extension program, frequent flyers should be able to keep their status through till December 2024. "

Executive Traveller - "The airline’s ‘apology package’ offers a fistful of benefits including a 12-month status extension for all frequent flyers at Silver or above,"

When the news first came out (on a Sunday IIRC), the Qantas Newsroom only had the press release available, which had no details on who would be extended. I remember checking to see if I'd qualify and the Status Support pages hadn't been updated for the latest news yet.

So I think it's a bit unfair to single out all the media articles because that's all they had to go on at the time.

Like the PH news article specifically says "At the time of writing, the specifics of each bonus – including which membership dates are being extended and when lounge passes and bonus points will be added – haven’t been finalised yet."

And then a later guide covers the updated details. "Members with a status end date from July to December 2022 are already covered by a previous status extension, so they miss out on a new one. For example, those with a new membership end date of July 2023 won't enjoy a further extension, as they were already extended last month."

Has anyone had their status extension updated or know when that is likely to happen? Thanks

The timing has been pretty well documented by Qantas on the Status Support page

Forgot to add something:

Not only do the Jan-Jun FF's get an extra 12 month extension, but they get a rollover into 2025 too!

Puts folks with a jul-dec anniversary at a massive disadvantage in terms of retaining.

Applied for status match with VA in Jan last year and for some weird reason I've still got gold with them. Haven't really compared the programs but VA seems to offer reasonable fares.

I wonder if anyone with a disadvantageous anniversary date AND paid retention would be interested in approaching Qantas, because this is such a scam. I would happy to collaborate and organise.

Cheers
You should've gotten a status credit rollover this month, right? Assuming you were gold before 31 July 2022.

Has anyone had their status extension updated?
As the announcement was only made this month, it is too early for anyone to have actually received an extension because the month has not finished.

or know when that is likely to happen?
As always happens, the extension will occur on completion of each anniversary month.

BTW, in other news I'm pretty confident that there will be a DSC promo offered from next week now that I've booked 5 trips this week ...
Wouldn't that be nice :)

Wondering did anyone get the 30K or 15K points? Any idea when to expect the points to hit one's account AND would they count towards the PC+ earn?

To the Jul-Dec cohort, don't despair. For all we know Alan might need to make another apology at the end of the year. You might get your 2024 extension then.

Yes, I've been thinking similar re the 'July to Dec miss out'. The last couple of status extensions have been leap-frogs, as the situation wore on. Jan-June extended, then July-Dec and now Jan-June again. But as this was supposed to be an 'apology' to all, that theory doesn't really wash!!

For me as as LTG I don't think I get anything really. It would be nice if they could give us some SC to get half way to Platinum

Domestic Business Lounge Passes are
now in my account, expiry 30 August 2023.
Option to transfer is available, not to be.

As LTG and no intention of flying Y in the current environment not flying enough to make WP, I'd take the points.

Re the disparity for Jul-Dec vs Jan-Jun. As pointed out earlier this has happened over the past few years and the way QF does it they ill NEVER make everyone happy or have it be fair because there'll always be people who are less happy than others. I'm an August but am really at this point, not too fussed either way. Yes, they should have been consistent (God I hate writing that word on this forum sometimes!! :D ) but they've decided not to be. I quite liked the staggered (decreasing) status support idea, except we're in an environment, and have been since March, 2020 where this thing keeps on going. Now sure, this latest effort is not directly related to Covid per se (though definitely related to its impact) so it's a bit differet but even with something like that there will be ways where it becomes unfair to some, and benefit others. This is the ease of a loyalty program with the same anniversary date for all (eg: Dec 31) because everyone gets the same. The QF model makes it more difficult.

Anyway I also agree with the posts over the past few days that the whole "extension" is pretty misleading because the reality is for most that they would have already gotten it via the previous promo (as I did) or yes, get that free extension which is great, but it's not like REALLY another year has been given to most of us in reality - and that's the headline everyone went with (and to be fair to the media who jumped on with the reporting on that Sunday with only the press release to go on it was a reasonable connection to make given what was written by QF so I don't really blame the media in this case. I saw the headline and thought great.. then five minutes later thought "uh, I want to see the fine print here before I get too invested" and sure enough... it's a sham extension more or less). I wouldn't call it a "scam" per se, but definitely misleading and making it sound better than it is for many of us. For some folks, probably not members of this community - who don't fly much since Covid - it probably is a nice bonus for them - but I doubt many on here who, on average, would fly more than the average joe).

It's like the $50 that a certain percentage of folks won't use for whatever reasons (and you can bet QF has factored a forecast of this spillage into their liability cost)..... sounds great as a headline.. how useful? Specially in the light of fare increases coming hot on the heels of this? not a lot. It definitely to me is a token at best. I may use it, I may not. I've not decided.

And just a side comment going back a few pages to the availability of cheaper fares on all flights on Rex says a lot more about where Rex is at - ie low load factors and a need to sell tickets than it does QF (not that it excuses QF's pricing, but of course peak services will have cheaper inventory likely gone or low - after all QF has also cut capacity so less inventory to sell, but a HEAP of connections to/from SYD/MEL which Rex just doesn't really have either).

Can't get reward seats for a HBA flight coming up soon, despite the excitement over additional reward seats flying around. Also noticed that change the cost in points according to the number of award seats left (i.e. 12k not 8k for the shorter domestic hops).

I'm thinking of taking Link to Wollongong from Essendon instead of QF + train via Sydney. Direct anyway and possibly more fun in a put-put prop-plane.

This is not the case. The reason you'd be seeing a Classic Reward seat for 12,000 points instead of 8,000 points is if it's a connecting itinerary where the sum of the length of both sectors exceeds 600 miles.

Aha, thanks. Yeah, that makes more sense.

Now I'm imagining the Catweazle from the 70s children's TV series catching these planes 😂😂😂. (I still sometimes say 'tellingbone', to the confusion of youngsters 😂).

Anyone not receive the $50 voucher by email?

Is there no way to go back and view it in the App after you have claimed it, as I never received the email?
