Because if BNE and LAX were the only 2 places those passengers come from or go to, the flight would possibly not exist. Many passengers connect from/to outside of LAX and BNE. So a midday depart and evening arrive eliminates all those passengers.
you can actually connect from places like DEN, SLC, SFO, LAS & other ports within a few hours flying of LAX to the 1215 LAX/BNE flight, but it would mean an early start. Looked at DEN/LAX to connect with the LAX/BNE 1215 VA flight recently & it meant departing DEN at around 0700, which meant getting to airport by 0500 which meant really had to stay at, or very near airport & still getting up at 0400.

Or if travelling from the Colorado Rockies Mountains getting up at 0100. Or stay at DEN the night before.

There are many permutations but we are trying to explain why a particular flight has lower patronage.

I suspect the reason for the JL is that the MEL-NRT is midnight to morning which suits JL nicely. Passengers to MEL arrive in evening. Victoria is a geographically small. The regional areas are easy to get to. Passengers to NRT arrive in morning Which is always the best arrival time. And a midnight departure from MEL is possible because MEL does not have a curfew.

BNE is a hub for a geographically very large state.

I’m sure there are other reasons...

& what does tentative approval even mean ?

There's no such thing as a tentative booking on an airline. You either have a booking or you don't.

But JL covers that with NRT-SYD which arrives crack of dawn and allows one world connections via QF to anywhere in AU.
Yeah but my point is that there is obviously a market (ie people willing to choose that flight over others) for day flights

Still worth it!

FYI

VA has a midday flight out of LAX to BNE, once a week. Timing is roughly 1215/2030+1. It's not very popular apparently or at least it's often cheaper than flying other days around it.

At this time of year it is 1115/1815. Perfect.

Not to Australia, unfortunately. There seems to be very little market for flights arriving into Australia at anything other than early to mid morning, from US. I am not sure if that is customer driven or airline driven. By contrast you can catch these sort of "day flights" from the west coast of US (SFO, LAX) to multiple Asian cities. Whilst timings to NRT/ICN/PEK are much better as they arrive mid afternoon, there are still day flights to places like HKG and SIN which are more like what the departure and arrival times would have to be for Australian flights.

I don't understand the lack of attraction though, in economy I always travel to Europe from Singapore on a day flight, far more enjoyable than midnight departures. A couple of years ago took a mid morning out of LAX on SQ via NRT to SIN, arriving late evening, in economy. It was brilliant, I enjoyed the flight as I wasn't super tired when getting on the plane, and it really helped manage jet lag well.

think there would be more demand for midday flights out of LAX to OZ, if they were promoted more. The VA flight is about the only time, they have an aircraft that can fly the sector. Think VA only have 5 x B777-300ERs. The old QF flight was again, just an add onto to schedule when they other wise had an aircraft sitting at LAX for 16 hours or so, so better utilisation of fleet, if have it only sit at LAX for 5 or 6 hours.

Like someone above suggested, in your holidaying in LA & you have to check out of your accom at 1000-1100 at latest, what do you do for 10 or so hours. Guess the holiday market is low yield, compared to the business person market.

The "business person" market is interesting. I think it depends on whether you're coming or going. If based in Australia, returning to Australia from a business trip to the US, the midnight flights probably work well, get you home and either go into the office, or spend the full day at home with the family, otherwise you're just staying in the US another night to catch the day flight home. If you are based in US, coming to Australia for business, the day flights are probably more appealing ( I know for me they would be).

always a few ways of looking at it. I would not dream of going to office same day, if I landed in OZ, at 0600.

So if I got all my business finished in LA by say 5pm or even 8pm, rather than go to airport & fly home, I would rather relax that night get a good nights sleep & if staying near LAX, plan on getting to airport at 1000 or 1100 for a 1215 departure, making sure at check in by 1100, as many airlines close check in, 60 mins prior to departure. At present, can only do this with VA to BNE. Still arrive in OZ same day, as if had departed LAX the night before.

When economy picks up again, will the likes of QF/VA/DL/AA/UA put on more LAX/SYD/LAX nonstops or look at other routes ? Imagine getting slots at certain times of day such as 2100-2359 out of LAX might be tricky, but LAX seems to be relatively quiet around midday.

I would much rather arrive into Australia later in the day especially on a flight from LOTFAP.The exception is BNE where we would be picked up and driven home.
Today we arrived into SYD ~0530.Family all working or at school. Can't check into the hotel until 1500.So we drove a rental car to Centennial park and slept in the car.

The JL MEL-NRT flight times are designed to compliment the JL SYD-NRT flight times.
JL771 NRT 1920 SYD 0610+1
JL772 SYD 0815 NRT 1705
JL773 NRT 1030 MEL 2155
JL774 MEL 0005 NRT 0905

The QF MEL-NRT times have little to do with it.

Yep... it is practically dead. Esp TBIT - i was on an AA dom flight 2 weeks back from LAX departing around 1pm... because I had arrived at 6am off the nightmare QF93 I had a few hours to kill so wandered into TBIT to use the QF F lounge - which was completely empty. Only me. And the terminal was pretty empty too.

This might be completely off topic... but does anyone else find the name of the JL business class product really weird??

"BEDD Sky Auberge" - a strange merging of French with an (assuming) English word I have never heard of..... even with all my years of Japanese exposure this one still through me off!

sigh... I do love it though.... reminded me of one of my all time fav websites:

The final schedule has been released and these flights are now on sale.

As a result of the new routes, Qantas will eventually discontinue its QF55/56 BNE-LAX service.

The Brisbane-San Francisco service will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, while flights to Chicago will depart on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Here is the full schedule:

Brisbane to Chicago

  • QF85 Brisbane 15:30 – Chicago 16:40
  • QF86 Chicago 21:50 – Brisbane 06:10 (+2 days)
Brisbane to San Francisco

  • QF59 Brisbane 20:35 – San Francisco 15:15
  • QF60 San Francisco 22:15 – Brisbane 06:00 (+2 days)

Huh ?

What do you mean with this statement ? TYPO ?

It's not a typo. From the Qantas press release:

The new routes will see a total of 14 weekly services year-round between Brisbane and the US, including the daily 787 Brisbane to Los Angeles service that continues to New York.

If QF15/16 is daily, and Qantas has 3x BNE-SFO and 4x BNE-ORD flights per week, that's a total of 14 weekly services between Brisbane and the US.
