Qantas & American Airlines same itinerary different price

Hi All,

I'm looking at flights SYD to MCO return for next year.
The sector SYD-DFW is operated by Qantas.
The sector DFW-MCO is operated by AA.

The itinerary I want on the American Airlines website is AUD$5,537.32
On the Qantas website exactly the same itinerary is AUD$6,835.00

I want to pay using my Qantas points so I need to book on Qantas, but $1300 is a big difference.

These prices are for 3 adults & 1 child.

Help appreciated for a solution.

Yes want to purchase with QF points.
Economy.
Leave 28th April return 20th May.

Sorry to break it to ya Criag but thats QF. I had the exact same problem with SYD-HNL-LAX-SYD. AA was selling the route (AA codeshare) for $1319 AUD vs QF $1607 (with limited options only QF18 and not QF12). The details in the fare bases were not identical while the prices were the same. (i.e. QF had surcharges for stopovers where as AA was all okay with stopovers in HNL). But the problem was that QF never allowed availability for SYD-LAX to be on a Q fare (being the cheapest fare bases compared to the one that they priced S). Another factor which I found was that QF sometimes doesn't open up availability for a specific fare class even if they have the numbers.

In this case, there isn't really much to do but really think if your QF points could be better spent elsewhere or maybe just earn AA miles with a AA codeshare.

Edit: Another option you have is to book the current QF sales fare for SYD-DFW bringing it down to $4286.92 + any fees and you can use your points on that. And buy DFW-MCO on AA separately for $1405.6 + fees (bit more if you want non-stop DFW-MCO-DFW).

The total being $5692.52 AUD - any deductions from points.

Points + Pay doesnt seem a great idea here. Can you get some of you on award then use AA for the rest of you?

Edit: Another option you have is to book the current QF sales fare for SYD-DFW bringing it down to $4286.92 + any fees and you can use your points on that. And buy DFW-MCO on AA separately for $1405.6 + fees (bit more if you want non-stop DFW-MCO-DFW).

The total being $5692.52 AUD - any deductions from points.

I did think of doing this but my concern was on the DFW-MCO sector the connection is 1hr 25min. So I was reluctant to do separate ticket in case the SYD-DFW is late.

Are they exactly the same, as in same flight, same date, same code? QF7 and AA7308, both the QF operated SYD-DFW flight, don't have to be the same price. The AA code might not have the same availability as the QF code, etc.

Thanks that is a bit more reassuring. I was assuming that we would clear customs in MCO with our baggage checked all the way SYD-DFW-MCO.
Is that correct?

You always clear customs at first point of entry to the US. DFW in this case. Bags may be tagged all the way through but you collect after immigration before clearing customs and then drop it off again.

Points + pay is a very bad idea. The redemption value is terrible. Save your points for another time (I.e. Classic Award) and just pay cash buying from AA.

85 minutes is pushing it if it's your first visit. I know that I would have a decent shot at making it, but I would rather have some wriggle room built in personally.

MCT for Int-Dom seems to be 85 minutes, so that connection is valid. And as a result QF can sell you that ticket. Whether it's a good idea is a different matter.

QF should allow you to through-check your luggage to MCO (I've done it before SYD-LAX then AA LAX-PHL). 85min is super tight, and with secondaries, you risk missing your connection. Considering that you're travelling with a family, I would recommend booking a slightly longer layover just in case anything happens. DFW is a pretty decent place a for a layover.

Transiting through an airport with children (and young children in particular) can take much more time than with just adults. So you might want to factor this into your plans.

How many QF ff points to you have available to spend? Can any of the other family members travelling do a family transfer of points to you?

When you say the return date is 20 May, that's to depart MCO I gather so you would actually arrive back in Australia 22 May. Otherwise to arrive back on 20 May you'd need to depart MCO 18 May.
