Qantas A380 refurbishment news and updates

Additionally QF has a large A380 maintenance hub at LaX or at least it did, not sure if it still is.

So presumably it has a large cache of spare parts there including non engine parts.

The airlines have been known to borrow parts from one another for those parts that are easy to substitute.

Given how critical is must be for Qantas ops to not have an aircraft stranded on its flagship route for several days, would it not be prudent to have a spare engine stored at LHR? I believe that Qantas has the higher rated (than BA) engines for the shortest of the LAX runways at MTOW.

There are 40 engines operational at any time on the QF fleet of 10 A380

How many spares should QF have?.
One in each port suggests
LHR, JNB, LAX/DFW, SYD/MEL, JNB
LAX/DFW could be one because of their relative proximity?. 5 or 7?

I suspect the answer is that engines are probably the most expensive part in the parts inventory, and the airlines don't want to have millions of $$$ just sitting around. Presumably they have done the maths of a lot of spare engines stashed around the place vs a few. I think the risk of an engine malfunction is actually quite rare but I don't have any data (notwithstanding QF32)

I remember when 747 were in use, QF used to ferry a spare engine under its wing. IIRC, there was one that was ferried to JNB

The A380 does not appear to have an underwing attachment for the spare

I believe there are 4 in Dresden sitting idle since March. Could they use one of them?
