Hallo!

I'm flying from SYD - PER on a 747-300. Just wondering if anyone knows if this has skybeds installed? I'm considering whether to try and upgrade if this is the case...

No Skybeds, but the 747 does have the old International "Dreamtime" seats - which are very comfortable - and certainly a step up from Domestic Business "Millenium" seats.

From 02 April, Qantas increases capacity in Economy and Business Class from Sydney to Perth and return, operating 747-300 aircraft 13 per week, in addition to other 737-800, A330 and 767-300 services.

The 747-300 aircraft features in-seat video in Economy, and Dreamtime seats in Business Class, in a configuration of 398 Economy and 52 Business Class.
Personally, for a daytime flight, give me the Dreamtime seats over Skybeds any day!
 
Skybeds are only installed in 747-400 and A330-300 aircraft. All of these Qantas aircraft have Skybeds. No other Qantas aircraft have Skybeds.

I tried to upgrade anyway but was unsuccessful (52 business class seats, 50 sold and 2 kept for travelling flight attendants!).

I did notice that the QF staff wore their aprons during meal service time (as per that announcement a few weeks/months ago), so I sat in anticipation to see if any of the other new features announced would be carried out.

Unfortunately none were. I am QF WP and sat in the 2nd row in Y class. Received no special welcome for FFs. Received no offer for a newspaper (I could see straight into the J cabin and there were spares). And last but not least, the bread roll was still cold... Is this stuff supposed to be happening yet?

I flew SYD-ZQN and CHC-SYD last weekend; on board I was referred to by name when being served and was offered a newspaper ; whether they wore aprons to serve the slop I don't recall; oh, I did notice the latest waste of money in that they gave out menus in economy class

I flew to Tokyo recently and had the CSM come all the way back to row 71 twice to welcome me and ensure that I had a good flight. Poor guy! Must have been a shock for him to mix it with the back of the plane!

He was flying to/from PER, so doesn't that count for international? Or is it inter-galactic since most people from WA are on a different planet :D .

You are correct, flying to WA does count as flying international. Can I interest you in joining us Western Australians in our succession movement. We are sick of all our taxes and royalties heading east, never to be seen again.

It is not commonly known that WA had a referendum in the early 20th century not long after federation where the majority of voters wanted to succeed from the Commonwealth of Australia.
 
Over the last few weeks since the new "system" came in while sitting in economy as a WP for the first few flights the CSM came down to give me a special welcome.

The last three flights in the last week or so they simply haven't bothered - all the same flights using the international 767-300 with international crew between CNS-BNE-CNE (which is a domestic continutation of a CNS-Japan flight).

So there you go - my initial hypothesis based on my own experiences is that they started off by following the new "system", but quickly gave up.

Incidentally, the breakfast on these flights in economy is now a cereal and bun - in the good old days it used to be cooked!

In business class for breakfast on these flights quite often many crews don't bother opening the champagne (one or two do and put it on the trolley ready) so you have to actually ask for it.

This is one thing which seems quite reasonable to do. The number of people wanting champagne on a morning short flight is probably low enough that on most days it would go untouched. As long as it is available on request, it seems ok to me

Hot breakfasts, ahh the memories, I was quite partial to the Ansett offerings, even served a hot breakfast on the CBR-SYD rockets, it was a bit like the cabin service olympics getting them all out and back in the short flying time!

I just knew someone would make some sort of comment like this :) To be fair though, the Qantas website still refers to the Perth flight as getting an international style of service.

Yes, but the point is the bottle is not always put on the trolley, unopened or open, or offered verbally, so people may not realise it is available as part of the service!

Furthermore, I have myself witnessed crew help themselves to unopened bottles of champagne at the end of a flight (ie slip the odd bottle into their luggage) - I am not sure whether this counts as an acceptable perk of the job in the eyes of QF or a bending of the rules...

There was somewhat more support for secession in WA than in the rest of Australia. In fact, there seems to have been little support from outside WA.

Perhaps all the NSW people knew we'd end up carrying them economically.

Ok fine they don't have to come and greet me but at least give me a warm bread roll not one with ice in the centre!

I am happy tho that they have started using 747-300's on Perth - Sydney legs, at least we have a selection of movies to watch (although not on-demand like the A333's).

I hope that they keep the 747-300's on the route to replace the 332's as they go over to Jetstar.
