So as the question says, Putting elite status bag tag onto carry on, Yay or Nay?

I've just received two new Air New Zealand Gold bag tags in the mail and suffice to say they won't be making an appearance on my carry on baggage anytime soon. The Qantas coasters QBag Tags are another one, you see people who've got them attached small bags that have/never will be checked in and it's often common to see them without any contact details written in leaving me confused as to the point.

Now I can see why they can be useful, Air New Zealand used to use them for FastBag (where you could drop checked baggage up to 15kg at the regional aircraft door) and Qantas does use the QBag tag for checked bags, but is attaching them to the smallest of items just screaming DYKWIA or am I missing something here?

IMHO yes. It serves no other real purpose!

Slightly unrelated, but I often find it amusing when I see Platinum & Platinum One bag tags in the on carry-on bags in the Qantas Club (at ports like SYD which have a J lounge). The other lounge users who don't know what a black or white Q tag is wouldn't care, and those who do know would think they're either a wanker (for pretending they have a status level they don't have) or too stupid to realise they can go next door into the nicer lounge. ;)😂

Of course these status trinkets are of most importance or have you missed the point of DYKWIA. I place such high value on said trinkets (white coasters) I have given most of them away and made a few on this site honorary members of the P1 club. I have a PS tag attached to one of our carry on size bags and when I have used it I leave in on for full display so that when using the priority lanes at security and boarding as I am sure it annoys some of the WP/ SG travellers out there :p

Back in the 90's I noticed those few with both Golden Wing multi star and Qantas Gold tags on their carry on.

In the naughties I was happy for the relevant gem tag to be showing.

These days, meh ... my original QF coasters are still in their packaging.

To be honest any such pastic tag can be a PITA, those cards can have sharp edges and more than one minor injury has resulted from them.

I am pretty sure I still have the AN GW and QF gold tags somewhere in my stash, they are in a safe place, just not sure where they are.

Well I have mine on my carry on bag because sometimes I check that bag in. I often travel with heavy work documents so the bag is too heavy for carry on on the way to work but light enough to carry on in the other direction. Once the tag is on a bag, I pretty much never remove it. I do have details written onto mine.

Even QF staff look at the bag tags. Once entering the J queue at check-in in PER, there was a QF staff member policing the entrance. Before I could open my mouth she noted my gold bag tag and ushered me through.

More seriously, I'm going to want some form of I'd on my carry on bag. May as well use what's given to me. It's convenient. If someone thinks I'm a knob for having a gold or platinum tag on my carry on, then joke is really on them. I'm sure I'm a knob for many other reasons. Making use of a bag tag is not one of them.

The VA platinum tags are black, so unless you have one, you wouldn’t know that it represents plat status. I have my tag on my carry on suitcase because I sometimes check it on the way home. Plus occasionally I like to gaze upon the tag with affection (and a touch of smugness) as I eat my toastie in the lounge. Judge me, I don’t care.

Anything of size going as carry on... always.

These days because I'm hoping a Plat tag will stop a Flight Attendant and/or Ground Crew member weighing/moving/lifting it and then quizzing me as to the weight of my bag (which usually contains a range of camera equipment). 😆

The QF coasters? NAH.

Nowhere nears as cool as my QF Boeing 747 Planetag which I had custom engraved with my name, QFF number and mobile :)

Henrys, I think you're missing something.
When checking in international (I think I remember what it was like) I was always asked to put a name tag on my carry on. As I had 2 tags from qantas and used to travel a fair bit international, one went on checked bag and the other on carry on. These days it's more like:
1. I primarily use it as a name tag. Elastic connector and its tough so won't get damaged or fall off like the paper ones
2. Sometimes I check the bag in as premium on Dash-8
3. Convenient place to store it.
My other tags, some plat some gold, are attached to my large bags somewhere in the garage gathering dust.
When I dropped status to gold quite a few years, I just left the platinum tags on and used the qantas lounge.
Now plat again but will drop back later next year but will still use the same tags until they wear out.
Tag still on my laptop bag under my desk now even though the only lounge I visit is my own :)
