Sounds like a big find with the total buried believed to be 120 aircraft!

Spitfires buried in Burma during war to be returned to UK - Telegraph

The Prime Minister secured a historic deal that will see the fighter aircraft dug up and shipped back to the UK almost 67 years after they were hidden more than 40-feet below ground amid fears of a Japanese occupation.

The gesture came as Mr Cameron became the first Western leader to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese democracy campaigner held under house arrest for 22 years by the military regime, and invited her to visit London in her first trip abroad for 24 years.

He called on Europe to suspend its ban on trade with Burma now that it was showing “prospects for change” following Miss Suu Kyi’s election to parliament in a sweeping electoral victory earlier this year.

How cool is that

Well we have some members heading to Myanmar soon to pick up some cheap fares don't we? They should stop off and take a look.

Wonder what sort of condition they will be in?

According to the article:

"They were just buried there in transport crates,” Mr Cundall said. “They were waxed, wrapped in greased paper and their joints tarred. They will be in near perfect condition.”

Oh my word! This will bring back a lot of battle of britain spirit to UK air shows. Just imagine all of them flying in formation - shame they probably wont be available for a Olympics opening ceremony fly past... Good timing for the diamond jubilee though...

What a wonderful story. That man deserves everything that's (hopefully) coming his way.

And a plethora of WW2 air movies with the real deal flying about

From what I have read they are late war Spitfire XIV's, so Griffon engines.

It's not quite the classic Spitfire shape but I like the droopy long-nosed look of the Griffon engined Spitfires:

How many squadrons would / could be made from this lot?

Before or after the cashed up rich (almost wrote doctor;)) weekend pilots crash their new purchase?

Re: Psst - want to buy a brand new Supermarine Spitfire (or a good reason to go to Bu

OP has misread the article - its 20 not 120. During the war this would have equipped one RAF squadron.

No I have not misread the article, it says the British government has got the OK for 20 to be returned, however it's thought that there are 120 :

In the pacific the first line of a squadron for the RAF composed of 16 aircraft and 8 spares on deployment, with 12 being generated for any particular mission (3 wings of 4), so that's enough for 5 squadrons.

Looks like this may be a non event now

As far as I can read, it was a political exercise at a time when Britain and Myanmar needed to forge some ties?
