Problems upgrading domestic flights with what appears U space on expert flyer

I booked a domestic itinerary after checking for upgrades on expert flyer but 2 flights (MEL--CNS via BNE ) did not clear -although still available in business for points,
I called -and after 1 hour on hold -I did not get anywhere with one of the offshore call centers
Is this a common issue ---I did try reregistering for the upgrade but no luck
 
I can see two potential reasons:
1- Is the booking ticketed? The upgrade request won't be confirmed if the flight is not ticketed yet
2- Call again and be firm that U class/classic award availability means your upgrade should be confirmed at time of request. I've also had issues upgrading to U class online when there is a connecting flight, maybe it's due to married segment...
