Price hikes QF business

Did I miss a post?

A few days ago QF domestic business prices seemed to leap up over 5.25%. This is more than can be accounted for for extra extra extra fuel surcharges!

Example, BNE-CNS now $900 was $855 (one way)...

Also, SYD-CNS now $1180 (one way) - in May 02 I was paying $910 so that's a 30% hike in 4 years, or 6% per annum compound, well above CPI.

Have a look here:

http://www.qantas.com.au/agents/dyn/qf/news/200605/0524

Summary:
Effective for sales and travel on/ after 11 May 2006, domestic Business Class, Fully Flexible, and Flexi Saver fares will increase.

The increase will apply as follows -

* J and DOX fare levels will increase by 5 percent
* Y and HOX fare levels will increase by 4 percent
* KIPOX and WIPOX fare levels will increase by 5 percent

These increases will apply to all mainline services and airlink services.

QantasLink propeller services will also experience increases up to the percentages noted above.

All existing bookings must be ticketed by 10 May 2006, otherwise increased fare level will apply.

You didn't miss anything. It's just Qantas gouging because they have a monopoly in business class.

Not just business class, but many fares rose similar percentages. Its a bit rough increasing both fares and fuel surcharges at the same time.

Must admit used to travel J class all the time, but find it practically impossible to justify any more, unless a long flight like SYD-DRW or BNE-PER etc.

Been learning survival strategies to cope with economy rides...

Disturbing that service levels, particularly catering gone down as fares rise.

Yes, indeed, competition, or lack of it, is obviously bad for customers!!!

Also used to happily use my points for upgrades (when possible), but now decided to accumulate them for a first class trip to London!

lack of competition may account for the price hikes. But just look at the service level on airlines where competition is fierce (ie the LOTFAP). The string competition has resulting in lower fares, but that has resulting in the need to lower operating costs and hence service.

Not sure where the happy medium lies? Duopoly perhaps?

The merry magicians at Qantas are having a fun time.

Pulling new fuel surcharges out of the hat while in the background sneaking up the core prices of just about all domestic fares.

Hmm. How long till the next adjustment I wonder?

NZ seems to have done similar

Don't they call it an enhancement?

Nah - enhancement is for a change to the rules (of FFP, COC, etc). Somehow nearly always in the airline's favour.

Fare adjustment is when the price goes up (it never goes down).

Always in the airline's favour  .

Not too much difference really.

I'm sure the magician's apprentices are in the background now trying to work out when to enhance the FF scheme as well without making it too obvious and open to massive critcism.

Not that I think Qantas care - while the CC points keep being issued and their gold mine of income from them continues, do they really care if people redeem FF points or not?

Adjustment - Fare going up.
Enhancement - Changes to FF scheme that *cough* benefits the members.
Competition - The only chance of fares going down (also see Government intervention :D )

I would guess the main determinant of next round of QFF enhancements will be to make sure QFF seems more attractive than Velocity to Joe Public. (Whether it actually is or not doesn't matter, especially the frequent domestic flyers who are largely captive market for QF.)

Agree. QF still gets my fare revenue for my flying. Its still issued on 081 ticket stock and I include a reasonable amount of QF flights. My mix is probably going to increase CX content (AA don't penalise CX flights like QF does with no status bonus on CX).

QF makes more money out of selling points to credit card companies. So they want to ensure the demand for FF point-earning credit cards remains strong. People like me moving to AA flight earning is probably not a major concern to them. Now if I was moving my earning to UA or NZ or SQ that would be a different matter.

Of course they will probably tell us that the next round of enhancements was necessary due to increasing fuel costs  .

Reminds me of the line NZ pulled. You know how airbucks can be used instead of NZ$ fare (or A$ if australian or norfolk island member) on NZ metal itineraries? Well airbucks cannot be used for the tax component on international award tickets. Supposedly this was for our own benefit so as to maximise the value of our airbucks. Somehow the fact we could use airbucks for the tax component on domestic fares (since they changed over to all inclusive pricing) leads to inconsistency and highlights the nonsense seemed to escape them!

If logic and reality applied to FF programs, none of us would maintain our accounts :p . Its our illogical unreality that makes us such targets for the airline's. Try and explain a MR or SCrun is logical terms to the uninformed  .

I think that all airline service levels will improve when they take delivery of the new front-end pax loader devices that can load a 200 seater in minutes thru the top-opening hatches.

Bit of a scramble to recover your senses and carry-ons but at 50 a dump, it is more efficient than allowing dawdling pax to choke up the airbridges!!

You've mentioned this strange "service" and "catering" term that I'm not used to before - can you elucidate??
