Previous Card holder - Anyway of still getting sign up bonuses?

Re: Existing Amex Card and still got approved

Hi, thinking of applying for a platinum card to get the 100k MR points offer. However, I only recently signed up in Sept 2015 for the Velocity Platinum card 100k offer. Reason to move is because I would prefer 1:1 MR KrisFlyer points instead of converting from Velocity at 1.35:1. Therefore, I am considering to cancel the Velocity card and re-sign up for the standard Platinum card.

Anyone experienced signing up for the latest platinum card and receive the bonus 100k while holding or just recently cancelled their current Amex issued card?

Yes. I was holding 2 other cards before applying for the plat charge and was awarded the bonus points.

Thanks for sharing! Did you cancel your previous 2 cards prior to applying for the platinum charge? Or does the Charge / Credit Card differences be sufficient to earn the sign up bonus?

Didn't cancel the other cards, so when I applied for the free plat reserve card they canceled (and refunded pro-rata the remaining fee)the velocity plat)
you can only have 2 credit cards + 1 charge card with amex (proper)

//edit: just realised the difference between a 'credit' and 'charge' card. but would still like to know if anyone has the same experience?

I have had Amex Edge when I applied for Platinum Charge card. I ticked 'Yes' to the question whether I have Amex card and I still received 120k points. You would see from Amex charge card referral thread there's a lot of people who have Amex credit card and received bonus points for charge card.

Re: Existing Amex Card and still got approved

I just activated my card yesterday, paid for my body corporate, and this morning got the 120k points. I have an existing Velocity Platinum card, and I ticked the option to indicate that I was an existing card holder when applying.

I also had the option to select Accor Plus when registering services after activation, though it expires on the 16th April (new activations).

Just a data point:
I have a DJ's AMEX and now Plat Edge and just received the bonus points for Plat Edge sign up and spend. Didn't mention my current card on the application however they found it themselves (mentioned in the welcome letter)

It's been mentioned before. It's harder for Amex to monitor whether you should or should not get the points. It's less costly for Amex to simply give applicants the points. I have earned, conservatively, at least 100K in sign up bonuses that I wasn't entitled to.

If the AMEX system cannot automatically detect you are an existing customer, they need to give up offering financial services immediately.

I think the existing customer clause is there to stop 'abuse' of the sign up bonus system and they will generally pay out anyway to limit arguments with those existing customers who did not read the T&C before applying for a new card. I assume the last thing AMEX would want is to lose an existing customer over a few points...

Interesting...

I was originally given 10,000 bonus points for the Platinum edge, however just noticed the points amount has been amended and 5,000 have been taken from my account, because now they've changed the promotion to only 5,000 bonus points. Understand thats the promotion rules but looks bloody unprofessional to me to take points away after they've been credited... Thoughts?

wowwhat a let down
signed up thru someones link no bonis 12oK miles nothing zip niente

I am interested to know of any existing card holders who have recently applied for an additional AMEX card and have not received the bonus MR points?

I am keen to get the Platinum Charge again but hold the Platinum Edge at the moment. The statement credits which have been available recently are to good to resist along with the 100k MR points.

I can get the Platinum Charge with 100k MR at $950pa (as a PA card) or 120k MR at $1200pa (referral). The 1.25c/pt for the extra points is boardline value... It will most likely be a one year event in any case.

i am one of those who miserably failed. Applied for business ( AMEX) platinum Charge Card 1500 annual fee and 5000 minimal spend in first 1-3 months to receive 150k bonus. When none was coming I rang em up an received the news. Ie existing card holders are ..... Not eligible for 150k bonus.

I did did ask for my money back and have successfully received a pro rata refund. But from what I am reading here on AFF threads many have recieved the bonus despite being AMEX holders so go figure?

Unlucky reading this thread (and others). Maybe they are more hardcore on the business cards than personal cards?

I could knock over the $1100 spend in the first day or two to see what happens (and get a full refund if required) but the possible hit to the credit rating would take some more time to get over.

Applied through a referral - existing Rewards Advatage card holder -zilch points !

My speculation is that it depends whether a new reward program is set up as a result of the new card, i.e. if you have Ascent via Edge and apply for the Charge, then you will most likely get it since they are setting up a new MR. If you have Edge and apply for Reserve, then you wouldn't get it because the new card would join your existing Ascent program (no new MR will be set up).

Anyway just my speculation so ymmv.

Of Course ..... Belated Welcome to AFF

Based on the thoughts of Haplo above, I applied for the Platinum Charge to accompany my existing Platinum Edge.

Card was approved the next day and dispatched the day after that. After a six business day wait for Australia Post to send the card from SYD to the very remote city of PER, I finally received it, spent the $1100 required that night and two nights later (when the required purchases cleared), I received my 100k MR bonus in my account. Very happy camper......

Far better service than the Australian banks which could make you wait months for the bonus points to credit.

I posted something about this topic to another forum on this site, but it is probably also of interest to those reading here too, so I'll paste it below:

I've done quite a bit of reading on this, both here and elsewhere and my completely unscientifically tested hypothesis is the same as decs, if you don't hold an existing Membership Rewards account of the type attached to the card you are opening you'll most likely get the bonus points.

From my own personal experience, over the last ten or so years, here is what has happened:

  • Current Platinum Edge -> Applied for Platinum Charge = success, bonus points credited
  • Current Qantas Premium -> Applied for DJ's Platinum = success, bonus points credited
  • Closed Qantas Premium (about 9 mths prior) -> Applied for Qantas Ultimate = FAIL! Bonus points didn't credit
When I rang AMEX about the last one they said it was because I hadn't waited 12 months before reapplying, take from that what you will. No manner of attempting to get them to credit the points anyway worked, so I closed the account and received a full pro-rata refund (this was about 5 years ago).

So in your case if you don't have another Ascent Premium account, which you most likely don't, I think you'll get the points - but I certainly wouldn't guarantee it. If it fails though, as others have said, I don't think you have any problems getting the annual fee refunded.

Based on this theory, if you are planning on applying for multiple products in the Ascent MR range (eg Plat Edge, Plat Charge etc), I think it is best to "move up" the card range to get the bonus points. Eg:

  • Apply for an Edge first and then the Platinum Charge second.

I'm going to give this hypothesis another test in the next few days and see if I can add another AMEX card to my collection in the great "July / August AMEX points bonanza".

Good luck in your AMEX point collect endeavours, may the points be with you!

I recently applied and was accepted for a Amex Velocity Platinum. I had previously cancelled one of these a few months ago.

Before I placed charges on the card and paid the annual fee I gave Amex a call to check if I would get any bonus points.

The answer was NO.

There have been a few discussion on this i.e. 12 month waiting period before you can apply for the same card to get the bonuses. This is consistent across the board for AMEX issued cards.
