I had a VA J reward ticket on SQ in May DXB-SIN, which cost 74,000 points and $440. Best I could get at the time.

However, I was browsing Google Flights today and found a UL J fare DXB-CMB-KUL for around AU$860, which was cheaper than most PE fares. So I booked it and cancelled my VA reward booking, and received the 74,000 points back into my accout. The cash refund means that the additional cost will be approx $480, and I'll be 74,000 points better off.

It pays to keep checking for better options.
