Hi,

I have 3 sectors comming up on CX.

LAX-HKG (AA Code share for status points)
HKG-SIN (CX Flight number)
SIN-HKG (CX Flight number)

I would like to pre allocate seats (really want 86A or K on the LAX-HKG sector) but I can not find a way on CX website.

Can I call them? Will the allow me to allocate a seat on a AA code share?

For the CX flight numbers, call CX and they will assist. But for the AA flight number you will need to deal through AA and I think you will find that just like QF reserves row 16 for their Platinum members to pre-allocate, CX likewise keeps row 86 for their elites, and as such I think AA will not be able to allocate that row.

J? Row 86?

Yeah, as shown on the map above, Cathay uses fixed numbers for the start of each cabin...

Eg
Row 1 = F
Row 11= J
Row 31 = Y
Row 80 = J (Upstairs) etc.

These are regardless of how many rows are actually in each class. A little confusing for the first time punter in (eg) J, who walks half way down the J cabin before looking up and seeing they're already at Row 15 when they had Row 11 seats!

Call them for the CX sectors as has been discussed here above. I don't rate your chances highly though - the last time (as a OneWorld Emerald) I called requesting certain seats in the Y cabin I was fobbed off. The funny thing was that a few weeks later I booked another flight online and was able to choose those same seats... Weird hey!

Or a J client in 80 something seat walking to the back of Y looking for his seat in the gally :)

Hmmm... I remember now. I had row 17 HKG-BKK on CX 777-300 but don't think it was the 7th row in business. I will need to check my notes on that trip.

On the CX 777 config, row 11 is the first row, but only exists as seats DEG. The first row on the window blocks is row 12. And there is no row 13 for supersticious reasons. So row 17 is actually the 5th row if looking at the AB or HK seats.

Spot on NM! I had 17A and it was the 5th row.

Its a good system. SQ uses it also (with different numbering).

JohnK, I also had a 17A with CX from HKG-LAX, the people in the "E" seats were very unhappy when they got on the plane and had the hosties trying to find other seats for them, but were told, flight was full.

Interestingly enough a collegue and I flew over and were seated together, but on our return leg they had us seperated and said our bookings weren't linked. We asked how they managed to get us together all the way from Per-hkg-lax-dfw-lax seated together but now we weren't linked. So they tried to seat us in 17EG, which didn't impress us. We were both platinum, and after about 10 mins we had seats in the upper deck, which on take off had about four empty seats. One was 80H which the pilots used for their breaks.

JohnK and I were discussing row 17 on the 777 aircraft. Your HKG-LAX flight will have been a 747-400 and the business class seating is very different. The 747 has the lie-flat 60" pitch seats, while the 777 has regional business class with 45" pitch.

Opps, teachs me for coming in halfway through conversation and not noting the prior submissions.

I don't have much experience travelling business class but the seat width on the CX 777 config is very poor. I hope they are only used short haul!

CX has the same affliction as SQ in that some routes served by "regional" a/c are actually quite long (eg middle-east).

Exactly. One such "problem" with CX is their HKG-BNE flights are operated by 2-class "Regional" A330 aircraft. Very poor option compared with the QF A330-300 Skybed for that route. But CX is daily and QF is not. However, CX does operate via CNS in one direction a few days each week.

On the days QF does not operate, I prefer to route via SYD or MEL for a decent seat.

The CX regional seats are fine for true regional routes such as HKG-KUL that I will be taking next month (about 3 hour flight). But occasionally they use a 3-class A330 on that route so 8 lucky J travellers get a true F seat.
