Where would you rather be in a European winter (yeh I know winter is finished but weather is still not great)!
Still snowing where I am currently in Poland....
Mask compliance is low here. Most seem to wear in the supermarket though... But nowhere else. 4 1/4 hour train ride from Wroclaw to Warsaw yesterday and saw only a handful wearing them despite reminder messages over the PA system.

My 50th birthday present to self is a trip to Speedway World Cup in Torun 25-29th July 2023. Still a while to go but something to look forward to. Prob spend 1 week in Normandy, then 4 weeks in Poland. First visit to both places. Can't wait.

Lots of good places to go in Poland, lots of interesting places too. If you are after any suggestions shout otherwise I'm sure @Virgin Bart has a few tips.

Without full planning things I want to see being:

Wieliczka Salt Mine and might do a few days at the Health Resort there
Moszna Castle
Around naz_ War Tunnels in Lower Silesia
Expolseum in Bydgoszcz
Gdansk
and of course Torun for the Speedway World Cup

I'll do the food suggestions:
Savoury:
- pierogi, try sweet and savoury (dumplings)
- golambki (rice and meat balls wrapped in cooked cabbage topped with tomato sauce and usually sour cream)
- placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes, savoury)
- tatar
- really anything

Restaurants to try:
- Pijania wodki i piwa (drinkery of vodka and beer) Pijalnia Wódki i Piwa ridiculously cheap shot bar with good drinking snacks. Try the Tatar and toasties. Menus in English too. See below photo with all the shots.
-bar mleczny (milk bar). They're not like ours, they're a communist era-relic with zero customer service. Delicious home made food and heavily subsidised by the government. See below photo with all the food.
- podwale 25 Restauracja Podwale 25. Kulinarne serce warszawskiej Starówki czeka na Ciebie! Tradycyjna gościnność, kuchnia i piwo! there's a few of these around. Bavarian style baked pork knuckle with all the trimmings included - you just order the pork for silly cheap prices. See below photo with the knuckle.
- any dedicated doughnut shop. Just bliss, especially when warm.

Coincidentally, we are going to Podwale 25 for lunch today before we fly back tonight.

Here's an example of the menu from a milk bar........

We should probably get these posts split out into a Poland destination guide or something.

Yes, agreed, hopefully a mod can do that.

Do you speak Polish? I always feel for the non-speakers when visiting a milk bar, the [non] service is a spectacle for us.

Very very little! We've been able to get by alright in multiple milk bars. We've worked out that ł is like a w and w is like a v etc.

@Mattg has a Guide to Krakow ..

Spent just over a week in Warsaw and Krakow in 2019....Poland is certainly a good tourist destination with cheap (by European standards) food and accommodation 😀. We had no trouble as most Poles spoke English. Bolt / Uber were very cheap so we used this to get around. Was pretty easy catching train from Krakow to Warsaw.

High on my to do list as a Polish History group is currently trawling through my Family History, sending pics of gravestones and other atmospheric stuff...lots to see.

I used FreeNow a few times on this trip, they were always cheaper than Bolt on their standard price and for some reason they dropped a 50% off coupon into my account. Made for some super cheap rides.

Łódź is an interesting place, it's referred to as the Manchester of Poland due to it's textile manufacturing history. It also has a very sombre history from the early to mid 1940's also through the (2nd largest) Jewish Ghetto and also the transport in/out to certain unnamed places via Radegast station.

Trains between cities are very cheap and first class is usually minimally more expensive. The legroom is pretty good.

If you visit Wrocław then watch out for the dwarves, there's hundreds of them dotted around the city.

Make sure you keep lots of room for pierogi and pielmieni..... this one was in a random bar in the underground shops section near Warsaw Central Station.
