Strange question (as usual for me).
Looking to book in some flights to HND under the current premium companion sale, as they're not much more than economy, and have a better shot at upgrading to J, especially if flying on 'off' days/mid week.

As you have to book 2 pax to the single booking though, I'm looking at going with a mate. He's Gold and I'm Platinum.

- Are you able to upgrade a single person on the booking, or only both parties?
- If you have to do both (this is ok, he wants to request as well), do the points for the upgrade come out of each person's QFF account? (or does it deduct both from one person's)
- Are you able to 'split' the booking into two PNRs to allow you to each manage the process separately? (I assume this might be frowned upon given the sale is for booking two people at once, though technically we'd still be flying together etc).

Appreciate any insight, thoughts or experience in this matter.

Hope this isn't too confusing!

A request for a booking with multiple pax is for all pax. You can't nominate one only, therefore both of you will be upgraded if the request is successful. The points will come from the requesting account for both of you.

Not sure about splitting the booking.

An upgrade request can only be for all passengers on the booking. The points will come from the account that makes the request (which probably should be yours I guess, given that as a WP you will be higher up the upgrade list).

Note that technically you aren't allowed to use your points to upgrade friends, only family (although this seems to never be enforced, it is against the rules of the program).

You could always get your mate to transfer you the points if the upgrade does come through (although again, of course, this is technically not allowed for friends).

Thanks all. That sounds feasible and along the lines of what I thought would happen. Splitting it is ideal for me I think as it voids the problem around there being conditions violated- it also means if there's only one seat available then I'd still have a shot at it!

Technically splitting the booking would violate the T&C's of the sale I believe:

If this fare is booked as part of the Premium Companion Sale – August 2015, Premium Companion Sale – May 2015, Luxe Christmas Companion Sale, 2 or more adult fare passengers must be booked and travel together.

Whether anything would actually happen if you did this I don't know but just something to be aware of.

IANAL but both conditions would still be met- at least from the way I (or what I would argue any reasonable person) would interpret.

Interesting, that's not showing for me (although the only joint booking I have at the moment is an award flight - maybe that's why?).

It depends if "booked" is past tense or present continuous :) You would no longer be booked together (even though you booked together).

That might be a bit of a stretch. Booked and travel together, for a companion sale, implies it is a single booking.
