Hey guys. Trying to organise a present for me ma, some flights MKY-SYD-MKY return to spend a few days with us while she's between jobs. I have enough points for the flights, but as I've been on a bit of a spree will have to pay taxes in cash.

These aren't onerous, but the "points plus pay" is only giving me the price in points, and saying that I don't have the minimum number of points available (as if you add taxes, it's true). The page says that you can mix and match any way you want when you get to the payment section (though I'm happy to pay all the points for flights, and cash for taxes), but as I don't have enough points to pay the entirety it won't let me continue.

Is this a new (and additional) broken website problem VA are yet to fix, or has it always been this way (I could have sworn I've brought my balance down to 0 before, and paid the difference). Why call it points plus pay if you can only use points?

Do you have enough points to pay the minimum points cost?

It should quote both prices (i.e. full points and points + pay with minimum points), and allow you to continue.

At least, that's what I'm thinking.

It is admittedly a stretch, but the non-tax included price is 21,800 + $45.30 for both flights (which is given as an option for selection). I have just over 23,000. In the flight selection I'm told the other option is to pay 5700 for the taxes. The problem is the taxes are only given in the points option in the summary, which makes the cost 27,500. There is no option to pay the taxes at all, at least not until I get to the payment page, which it won't let me go to because I don't have the 27,500 points 'full cost'.

It does work but a strange arrangement.

You need to go through the booking almost to the end before it reintroduces the $$$ amount instead of the points for taxes. You then end up with a slider similar to what you see on Qantas.

Yeah, that's what I've usually experienced. But the site currently won't even let me press continue unless I have enough points for both taxes and flights.

Did a dummy run for single flights too. Strangely it said I didn't even have enough for an 8000 point redemption! Though for a one-way it let me go through. May be an issue with return flights.

Gremlins afoot methinks. Will try again tomorrow. Or on a different computer tonight.

I did a booking using this two days ago but it was only one way and I had lots of spare points so I guess I would not see either of these issues.
