Point Upgrade request processing on 3/4 class aircraft

Flying on A380 QF82 SIN SYD, I made a J point upgrade request, opt in to a gate upgrade too.

Flight is in 15 or so hours, and I got a Y+ upgrade, seat confirmed, point deducted.

Is that possiblel? I always thought before checkin its J or declined, and after checkin It may be J or Y+ (or declined)

EF still shows F2 J5, which I imagine means there are at least 3 physicall seats available.

Called Qantas, got Fidji, agent told me I am still in the upgrade queue.

F2 J5 means at least 7 seats available, two in First and 5 in business.
