Contemplating a quick trip to LAX.
Pretending to my husband I know how to budget
So being of the plus size variety and have zero intention of encroaching of someone else's personal space
...which is better 2 x economy or 1 premium?
Much appreciate the assistance

Does it has to be Qantas A380? My first thought was AirNz skycouch row in economy. Not for the fake lie down photos they pimp but 3 seats for 2 people.

I have not flown the QF 787 or 380 other than J (or F in the 380). When 787 first came into service I did get a seat in the first row of Y+ for a domestic leg. The seat was comfy enough, no one can recline into your space and I am of the understanding that some type of foot rest is provided on international flights. From memory a couple of pictures may have been posted elsewhere on this site.

Both MrsM and I both pretend to know how to budget when it comes to travel, I believe MrsM and I are also seriously deluded. ;)

Have fun in LA

Yeppers @Matt_01 my husband thinks I am deluding myself as well
Be thinks this trip who end up as business as usual lol
Just trying to do research lol.

When the 787 came into service I was invited to the aircraft viewing, I took MrsM and MissM. My plan was to convince them that Y+ may be a suitable alternative. Once on the aircraft MrsM stated 'I could go to the US in this' (Y+), MissM just looked at me and said 'what do you mean'.

A few months later when booking flights I reminded MrsM that she had stated she would travel in Y+ and now comes the new response - I was only kidding, you are not really going to put us in premium economy are you?

On the A380 Y arm rests do not go flush to the seats when raised. If width around the middle is an issue this might be annoying. No Y seats seem to be wide enough across the shoulders anyway.
Y+ is more than just more space, but they can be tight to get out of when the person in front reclines. The 787 Y seats do have flush armrests and also greater legroom than the A380 Y.
If I ignored the fares I would take Y+ over Y, but 2 Y seats on a 787 is probably a good solution.

2 x economy will get you double points and double SCs.

Given the negatives of the PE seat - especially when someone in front reclines, I'd look into 2 x economy.

I did also think if someone reclined I could use the other tray

Exactly.

Now that you mentioned HNL... QF does have some very good fares there, around $2500 return in business class. Combine that with a flight - perhaps in economy or economy plus - from there to the mainland it might work out quite economical (and give you a break on the beach in HNL).

Sorry, originating airport?
I just meant i have take economy previously lol and that was HNL to Syd with a spare seat beside.
I was just wondering how the A380 would be :)
It is very nice to not encroach on others (if not family cause they don't get to object )

The A380 economy is better than 787 economy as its wider IMO.
I understand you want to be QF A380 specific but please consider some other airlines.
The VA/DL 777 Y product is good too - and in fact slightly wider than even the A380 product. I reckon the 9 abreast 777 Y product is the best Y seat product you can get - focusing only on the seat.

VA/DL also have the Economy X / Comfort plus - same seat but extra leg room though I cant remember whether all the Econ X/comfort plus seats all have tray tables in the arm rest....

If concerned best to get 2 seats. There is a view that 2xY is better than W (prem Y) and I agree with it.
2xY = double SC, points, luggage. Second Y seat does not attract taxes and the airline surcharge. The second tray table is gold!
Additionally Y awards are easier to obtain than W or J.

The bulkhead Y seats have immovable arm rests because the tray table is in it and therefore have narrower widths. Dont get 2 seats on a bulkhead row.

Define plus size. You're a Platinum from memory? I'm of the large size variety and have no issues on QF economy exit rows/bulkheads on 747/A380/A330. Haven't tried 787 yet so cannot comment.

As you're talking 2 Y seats, you'd find the extra legroom and 10 years of seat development makes for a better experience on the 787. It's just for the traveller who only had one seat, the QF 787 seat sucks just from a width perspective.

OT @mrsterryn I believe you may be some long lost relative. This thread seems very similar to another, “Oops need to fly to Tokyo to buy a bag”. After reading that thread and as I will be in Tokyo next week I have already set aside to visit a couple of shops in Ginza to look at a bag and watch that I do not need but like the look of. I suspect said items will return to Australia. ;).

You have done your research and as @Flying mermaid said, just go J. MrsM and MissM often convince me they have done research that shopping in the US is far better than AU. As I mentioned up thread we are both deluded.
