I'm a Gold FF based in Syd and have to get around 700ish points to hit plat this year, with 8 months left to do it.

I have a fairly open pass to travel wherever though it will only be paid in economy due to work policy.

Do you think it is worth pushing through to hit plat? My most common trips recently have been Syd->Lax->Sfo netting me about 110 status credits total journey back to Syd. Its an awful journey in economy and by the looks of it there isn't much chance of op-up on these flights, the best I've done is gotten a couple of premium economy seating (seems like its been preselected by amex rather than assiged to me by qantas) and only one official op-up in my life at check-in to 'real premium economy'.

Any thoughts on ways to maximise the status credits?

Cheers!

Hi Chorse and welcome to AFF

I guess it depends on your future flying habits. but if you have an open travel pass and are travelling overseas, you would get a lot of use out of the F lounge.

Do you travel interstate at all? Quite often you can do better earning SC's on DOM fares, especially if it isn't the cheap eDeals.

Thanks mate.

I can certainly do dom travel though its almost been entirely international so far. And yes, I can also book those without being on eDeal. If they are more profitable SCwise I will start looking into them ;)

F lounge is a nice thought. Are there equivalents to F lounge in the overseas airports?

Cheers!

Well a MEL-SYD will earn 40SC return as an example.

Yes there are other F lounges around the world too.

So is there realistically more chance of an op-up as platinum or am I just dreaming? The F lounges look great and I could probably make good use of them but it is an awful lot of economy and more if there are no op-ups on the way.

There is a chance, but not a certainty! however more of a chance than a SG... mind you, you would also get front row of Y on most flights too.

Only in business. With an international economy only policy, I'm not sure that domestic business would be on the cards. :?:

40SC return would by full economy. Business would be 80SC return.

I am not sure if WP is worth it these days, you certainly dont get double the benefits as a WP compared to SG IMHO. If you get close to qualification, then maybe, or if you get an offer for double SCs in April that makes the task easier!

Absolutely more chance but still chances are slim. I actually received an op up the first flight I flew after becoming WP which was a lovely induction :)

Best things for me about WP are the domestic business lounges which are fantastic especially with the new food and F check in / F lounge internationally. The double points bonus really kicks in wonders as well.

One (minor) difference I noticed on the last 2 flights in international J - on each flight the crew took my food order first before the rest of the cabin. It didn't really matter as I was sitting in row 12, but could make a difference if there's a catering error and I'm seated at the rear.

Yes to slightly more chance of an op up. Never had an op up when I had AA EXP flying on QF, but have had 2 long haul PE -> J op ups on QF after achieving WP. Admittedly one of them was a goodwill gesture following an IRROP. :)

The unpublished benefits are small in and of themselves but when viewed together makes a journey with QF seem that bit more special.

Only you can answer that question. In my opinion with recent "enhancements" it is not worth spending extra money to get to Platinum if you already have Gold status unless you are already doing the flying and want to route the long way to pick up some extra SCs.

e.g I normally fly SYD-MEL-SIN-BKK and v.v. but purchased from SE Asia as it costs roughly the same as a SYD-BKK return on QF economy purchased in Australia. I earn ~200 SCs for return trip as opposed to 60 SCs for direct return trip.

More like dreaming but you never know. I am surprised you have not had more op-ups on the routes you fly as these are the routes that are likely to have more op-ups due to the loads.

Actually they have been doing that on and off for quite a while..it's just that, as you note, it only tends to be noticeable (and useful) if you aren't sitting at or close to the front of the cabin.
