There really isn't an extra year of platinum if you are flying...

Think about this... You are p1 with 2,500 in your current year and you drop from p1 to WP. 12 months later you don't requalify for WP and you drop to gold. Essentially you've 'wasted' 1300 sc which mean nothing. So over the space of 12 months you go from p1 to gold, even though your sc over that period are enough for 2 years of platinum.

So the soft landing is only of benefit if you don't care/try to maintain any kind of status.
