So, having fretted as to whether my +1 would reach Platinum by the end of April 13, with some work-required travel and judicial use of JASA's, (thanks AFF) plus the hallowed DSC offer last month (thanks Jacques Vert for getting me to check "special offers" on his profile), it seems he has a real chance of obtaining P1 by the end of April. With work travel, it will just take one extra return flight to reach it.

+1 has been Platinum before plus gave me the benefit of being gold, so he understands the value of being Platinum. So, is it worth convincing him to fly just one more trip to reach P1?

Based on this thread: Platinum One experiences? anecdotal evidence suggests it may not be worth it.

The true value seems to become apparent if you do actually live 'on the road'.

That said, if it's just 'one more trip' then why not. I would. Obviously +1 must have had a lot of QF only SC's to get it.

Yes. All travel on Qantas. Mostly cheap flights Melbourne - Adl plus a PE mid year to UK.
How far and how much would it cost for this 'one extra trip'??

Just one more return JASA flight Adelaide - Melbourne as with DSC this nets 160 points. He needs, once all his work flights have been taken, just 130 points.

The issue is that I'm the one who haunts this forum and he probably doesn't even know what P1 is as he has just focused on Platinum from his past experiences. So if its worth it ill need a compelling argument.

For that amount I would definitely do it. Especially if wanting to get awards released.

Yes, thanks Simon, it's those things that are compelling and which I don't know much about. He has done so much travel and was just pleased to get platinum.

Is there a soft landing from P1 to P next cycle?

Just tell him you know best and to get on with it!

That should be compelling enough for him... :)

Oh, and maybe cook him a sumptious dinner as well... ;)

I would but he's on a plane for dinner! :).

But yes, with all this flying/status/JASA/DSC stuff his eyes glaze a little but lit up when he saw platinum on his BC this week. I think he owes me the dinner. :)

Don't you both need to go to Melbourne for the weekend for a quick get away? Or Sydney for something different ;)

No, no, no... He doesnt' need to cook the dinner...

You have obviously never read the page "If Dear Abby was a man" have you...

There are some very sensible suggestions on that page... :)

The idea of a quickie getaway could have some merits to it though...

I'd go for it. Only issues is P1 working in the next membership year and him wanting to get to that mythical level again. ;)

For the sake of one trip do it.
Even if it underwhelms, you won't die wondering.

Is the +1 LTG yet? If LTG and flying enough to hit P1 (sort of) and has reasonably plannable future travel I would be considering AAdvantage and getting EXP there - for me the benefit of P1 over the reduced award cost on AA is not a valid argument - I could have gotten AAwards on AA on the days I wanted with tougher routings but for less points. The only downside of AA is that you pay 10% of full fare for infants rather than being free like QF.

So, I've just been into his calendar and have found an extra three interstate trips. With his double SC, and if a planned trip to NZ happens. I think he will romp it in. No need for dinners or flights. So, would 6 weeks between Platinum and P1 be some kind of record?

Not quite, I think he is something like 80% towards LTG. You can imagine how much flying he has done if he has got almost to Platinum on cheap discount seats Adelaide - Melbourne. But chasing platinum he is becoming somewhat used to J seats through JASA. He is in for a shock shortly! :)

If you are that close go for it.

Mainly if nothing else when you fall you will have an extra year at WP.

I'de totally go for it being so close, you wont be left wondering, best benefit P1 provides is first for Op-ups (After CL ofcourse, if they fly whY) on that out of the 20 of my whY flights this membership year I have had 4 Op-ups, which is alot better than what it was as a WP.

Also advanced seat selection is a winner for me.

Go for it.

Yes, absolutely. I am similar being P1 on mostly domestic Y flights. I have an op-up on average every 3 or so weeks, and being able to select any Y seats from the day you book is amazing. The special service team are excellent, even for domestic travel. I once left a USB on a flight and they couriered it to me in time to present the ppt that was on it, another time they found my glasses... nothing is too much trouble.

If I was that close to WP - I'd go for it.

WP1 = YES.

In regards to soft landing.....as long as you have 4 ~ I don't see why not.
